Hello all, this is my first trip report, Hope you like:
After months of waiting, and anticipation, my trip to Vegas was finally here.
8/28/03
JFK-LAS
B6 281
STD: 9:35am
ATD: 9:35am
STA: 12:15pm
ATA: 11:50am
I woke up early on the morning of the 28th, there was some last minute packing for me to do. After a nice big breakfast, my dad drove me over to JFK. Since I live so close, we were at the Jetblue terminal in 10 minutes. Curbside check in went quick, though I did get a little annoyed as when I was about to tip the skycap handling my bags, he mentioned how tips are allowed. It made me not want to give him anything at all, but I figured if I didn't my bags would end up in Rochester. Walking through the B6 terminal at JFK is nothing special, the views are bad, and the terminal is old.
It was very crowded that morning, many people heading all over for labor day. Boarding began around 910, it was announced to be a full flight, therefore no standbys were getting on. I would be flying alone today, as all my other friends opted to take cheaper, connecting flight. Plus I really wanted to try Jetblue out. Pushback occurred on time, and we quickly taxied over to runway 4R. It was a beautiful clear day, and I looked forward to seeing NYC out of my window seat. After a Gemini MD11 ahead of us, we were #1 for takeoff. Quickly the flight was airborne, and we immediately made a turn south bound, to cross over into NJ. Our routing took us over NJ, over PHL directly over PIT, CMH, DAY, and Indiana. There were no clouds at all it seemed, and the ride was very smooth. We continued along over KS, CO, and eventually southern Utah. It was pretty cool to see crop circles somewhere near Dodge City, KS. The F/A's were all very nice, though they don't serve much as per Jetblue's BYOF policy.
Landing was uneventful, though it did get bumpy on finals. This was my first time in Vegas, and it was interesting to see how the desert just all of a sudden becomes this huge town. Once in LAS, I noticed the wide array of SW, HP, and charter airlines on the ground. Our gate was occupied for about 20 minutes, and when we finally parked the crew let us out through the back door. This was my first time on a tarmac, and my first taste of the LV heat. Baggage claim took around 30 minutes, as their were a few flights arriving at the same time.

After 5 days of fun in sin city, it was time for me to go home. As all my friends had left earlier, I had around 10 hours to kill by myself. So I decided to head over to LAS, in order to be placed on standby for the 11:30pm flight. The agent promptly did this, though she warned me the flight was 100% full. I killed time in McCarran airport as best I could. I would not get a boarding pass till 7:30pm, therefore no airside views until than. I ate dinner at a Nascar themed joint, and just read magazines. I found later, that there is an aviation museum at LAS, wish I had known earlier.
At 7:30pm I proceeded back to the Jetblue counter, in order to receive my boarding pass. She took my bags, and promptly explained the standby process. I than proceeded airside, in order to spot some while waiting. The airport was dead at this time, just a few early arrivals for the other redeyes to the east coast, and Cali. As time passed, things got very crowded in the waiting area. My flight departed from gate A15, and by the number of people sitting there, I knew my standby chances were slim. Sure enough, at 11:15pm it was announced no standbys would be boarded. This meant 2 more hours for me at LAS, so I headed over to Taco Bell for some grub.
12:50am came along, and we boarded on time. This flight was also 100% full. The F/A announced we were aboard N568JB, "Blue Sapphire" As far as I know, this is the newest member of their fleet. While sitting at the gate, I noticed some lightning in the distance, I knew this would be a factor in the future. Sure enough, while we were pushing back, the storm came over the field. The pilot took us over to the runway, and promptly shut the engines down. I knew this was not good, as we were in the middle of a down pour. The pilot announced we would be sitting for awhile, as the storm would be passing soon. Finally after an hour of waiting, we took off for JFK. As there was still some storms in the area, the takeoff was kind of bumpy. It was nice to see lightning in the distance though.
Our route took us over UT, CO, IA, NE, and northern ILL. By this time the sun was out, and it was quite cloudy even at 39,000 feet. Due to a nice tail wind, our speed was 620mph ! I tried my best to sleep, it's so hard to on an airplane. The whole flight was turbulent, and landing was real shaky. We landed only 20 minutes late, due to making up time from the tail wind. JFK was cloudy, and rainy. I only caught a glimpse of the ground while we passed over the shoreline. Landing was on 4L, and we quickly taxied to the gate. I was tired as hell, and glad to be home. Las Vegas is a great place to visit, the girls out there love the NYC accent Smile Hope you enjoy, comments are welcome.
