Alitalia flight 440 MXP-MUC (Munich)
Scheduled departure: 4h10pm
Pre-assigned seat: 12A
Departure from terminal A, gate 4

For once, our departure to MUC from MXP was on time. The AZ boarding process
is non-existant. A gate agents informs pax that it is time to board and
simply a line makes do for the boarding process. Right before stepping on the
plane, there are newspapers (journalis!) on a nice rack offered to
passengers. The f/a's then go through the cabin to offer the newspapers once
more just in case. Boarding is fast and efficient. Though, we need to sit a
few minutes before we are cleared by ATC that there is a path in the sky for
us to fly through to MUC. Automated voice informs pax that we are about to
depart and all the same old information. We push at 4h35pm and lift at 4h50pm.

Inside the plane, the configuation is quite interesting. From row 1 to row
20, the configuration is 2x2 with green business-type seats. At row 21, the
configuration is 2x3, like on all MD-80s in the United States. I was
impressed I was able to sit in seat 12 and experience a comfortable flight to
MUC. In flight, we are served a quick snack, which in the United States would
be considered a full meal.

Here is a little break down of "international" domestic vs. USA domestic:

AZ domestic: (AZ M80 133 seats) CO
domestic: (CO M80 141 seats)
•4 flight attendants and 2 carts
•3 flight attendants and 1 cart
for a configuration of 2x2 and 2x3
for a configuration of 3x3
(overall less pax)
(save for first class)
•substantial snack of cheese sandwich, •1 bag of
pretzels and one drink
salad, fruit cup, water, and dessert
as well as other beverage service
•complimentary wine/beer
•big choice of major international daily
•separate coffee/tea service (after meal)

Note the difference here. The four f/a's were able to serve the "snack" and
clean up within 50 minutes. It was a very nice treat to experience AZ
domestic and based on that one flight, AZ's domestic is much better over
their international service.

Touchdown in MUC in snow at 5h41pm. The MUC airport is IMMACULATE. It is so
spacious, the lighting is comfortable, and everything is so easy to get to.
Our walk to the baggage claim was not more than 2 minutes. The baggage claim
is spacious as well. There isn't even any customs! It is amazing that I have
flown in to two countries (France and Germany) and my bags were not checked
in either country, nor was my passport stamped. (My passport was stamped in
Milan, however, both ways.)

On a side trip:
While in Bad Tölz, Germany, I was also able to make a very easy two hour
train ride up to MUC for some spotting. The train drops off underground at
the main terminal. Once inside, I made my way upstairs and outside of part A
of the VERY LONG terminal. (I swear, the terminal must be 3 miles long.)
Inside, it is spotless and the gift shops are stock full of excellent gifts
from chocolate (yum!) to those awesome Schback planes (figures). I should
have bought some. Once outside, I tried to find a nice spot to catch as much
traffic as I could, but almost every spot is blocked by immensely tall
fences. I didn't want to go to the observation tower because it was too far
from the planes. I was also on foot, so I could not drive around the
perimeter of the airport either to do some exploring. I found a spot at the
end of part A of the terminal, however, and cought some LH 321's, 320's,
73's, Deutsche BA's, and some Russian plane that I have no idea what it is.
I'll ask for some help once it gets scanned. I was really only able to get
traffic that was departing to the runway. I stayed at MUC for about two
hours, running around, trying to catch as much traffic as I could. It then
began to snow and get really really cold, so I made my journey back. The
train system was pretty efficient and easy to use as well.
