I arrived at the airport about an hour and thirty minutes prior to departure. I had earned my Silver Card with EVA Air over summer, so I was able to check-in at the Silver Card line. All U.S.-bound passengers had their checked baggage individually inspected, which was time-consuming. Check-in was very smooth. I received my boarding pass and lounge invitation very quickly. My two bags, along with my friends' two bags, were priority checked to LAX.
Immigration and security was smooth. They had a separate security line for U.S.-bound passengers, so our carry-on baggage could be individually searched. By the time we finished, we had about 55 minutes prior to departure.
My friend and I decided to visit the Evergreen Lounge. I used my invitation while she used her Priority Pass card. The lounge was divided into Business Class and First Class sections. I was permitted into the Business Class area, which was big and spacious. Since my time was limited, I didn't do much exploring. I grabbed some food from the small self-service area. The lounge was stocked with snacks, cake, steamed buns, fried rice, and miso soup. In addition, there was a self-service bar, and a fridge full of cold beverages. A coffee machine was available to make cappuccinos, etc. Personally, I feel that the China Airlines lounge in Taipei is more organized and has greater food variety.
Prior to entering the waiting area, agents checked my passport and boarding pass to ensure that I was at the right gate. Once my friend and I were inside, they began boarding Super First and Super Business Class passengers. It wasn't long before they started boarding Evergreen Deluxe passengers. Complimentary Chinese and English newspapers were available at the area right before entering the aircraft door.
The Boeing 747-400 was configured with 386 seats in four classes, including 142 Evergreen Deluxe seats at a 37"/38" pitch. The Evergreen Deluxe Class seats span from the nose to the third emergency exit situated over the wing. Generally, seats are 2-4-2 abreast. Each Evergreen Deluxe seat is equipped with a PTV. In our seat pocket, we had slippers, a simple overnight kit, and a headset. On our seat, we had a small pillow and a huge blanket.
Prior to take-off, the flight attendants passed out cold wet towels. The safety demonstration video was played. Afterwards, the flight attendants came around with the menus for the dinner and the hot refreshment to be served on our flight. Take-off was smooth. The Captain didn't call "Service Check" until we were well over 20,000 feet. I think the main reason was because of the typhoon that was around Okinawa, Japan.
Once we reached our cruising altitude, the flight attendants first distributed U.S. customs and arrival forms. Shortly afterwards, a snack and beverage service was conducted. We were given a small pack of nuts with arare and a cold beverage. There was nothing out of the ordinary.
About half an hour later, the meal carts were pushed out and dinner service began.
Our menu for dinner as follows:
Peppered Mushroom and Beef Ragout in Herbal Cream Sauce
Braised Chicken with Winter Melon
I chose the beef entree which also came with a warm roll. Some parts of the beef were a little hard to bite, but in general, the meal was pretty good. After we finished, the flight attendants passed out Haagen Dazs Belgian Chocolate ice cream. During the meal, there was continued service of hot tea and hot coffee.
After dinner, the lights were dimmed. Duty free sales begun, but most passengers just relaxed and caught some sleep. I started flipping through the limited channels of the PTV. There was Airshow and some movies including Italian Job, Finding Nemo, Anger Management, etc. I was hoping for some sort of snack to occur. However, the flight attendants only came around with drink rounds. In the end, my friend and I ended up asking for cup noodles, which the flight attendant kindly gave us.
Before eating our cup noodles, my friend and I took the opportunity to mail postcards to our friends. EVA Air offers free postcards and free mailing, so we took advantage of the service.
About two hours and thirty minutes prior to landing, the lights were turned back on. The flight attendants first came around with cold beverages. Then, hot wet towels were given out. About half an hour later, the meal service began.
Our menu for refreshment as follows:
-Egg Roulade with Tuna
-Dried Pork Julienne
-Chicken and Green Pea Porridge
-Farmhouse Pate with Potato Salad
I chose the Chinese Style selection. But since I was sitting so far back of the Evergreen Deluxe cabin, I was given the Chinese Style entree with the Western Style side dishes. So, I had chicken porridge with yoghurt and potato salad. They also gave me a warm Chinese roll. I definitely would've enjoyed the meal more if my side dishes were a little more normal. There was again hot tea and hot coffee to accompany our meal.
After the meal, the cabin was alive again. Some people were still resting, but most people were bustling and getting ready for their arrival into Los Angeles. Once the descent began, the flight attendants came around to pick up the headsets. They also passed out candies.
We arrived early into LAX, so, like usual, we were required to wait for our gate while another airline occupied it. Immigration was smooth. With priority baggage, I had my bags and was out of the airport in no time.
This flight with EVA Air was definitely nice. They've made improvements to their blankets and their service. I hope they will upgrade their seats and their inflight entertainment soon. It's sad how their A330-200s, which are used on short-haul flights, has entertainment far more superior than the flagship of their fleet, the B747-400. EVA Air needs to introduce its new Premium Laurel Class onto its 747s. Also, rumors say EVA will be canceling Evergreen Deluxe with the introduction of its 777 fleet. I sure hope the rumors are false because Evergreen Deluxe is an excellent product and drives me to fly with EVA Air.

Evergreen Deluxe passengers unfortunately do not get invited to the lounge. I'm Silver card with EVA's Evergreen Club, so I was able to access the lounge.
Evergreen Deluxe passengers don't really get much more compared to Economy Class. They do get an amenity kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, and lotion), a menu, candy prior to landing, and a nicer blanket. I guess the main incentive is still the PTV, better seating at 38", and somewhat better food.

Glad to hear they have improved the services. Planning to fly from EWR to TPE in December but it all depends on SARS. Any signs of it will cancel the trip.
I, too, had reached the silver card status but never got to utilize it fully. The status only last two years and I only travel to TW once a year.
It would not be a smart move if they get rid of the Evergreen Delux Class. It is the only reason I travel with EVA too.

I usually fly twice a year LHR-BKK on BR's Evergreen Deluxe class - it is fabulous value for money compared to J class and it is the reason I fly that airline. Every time I fly Eva the Evergreen Deluxe cabin is full (even this year when I flew in the middle of the SARS outbreak) so I would be surprised to say the least if they got rid of it. For me it makes BR the best carrier from LHR to the Far East even above BA, SQ, QF and TG.
