I have had a return trip on South African Airways route Johannesburg - CapeTown return. My first trips on SAA - better than expected.
Top South African hospitality!

Outbound JNB-CPT
Flightnr: SA333
Aircraft: B747-200
Reg: ZS-SAN
Cabin: Y
Seat: 47H, aisle
Gate: E10

The check-in was very smooth and with friendly service from the checkin staff behind the counter. Checked in almost one houre before departure and no hurry to the gate. The aircraft had a remote stand and we were boarded through two gates. Maybe always remote stand in JNB for domestic flights?
The pitch was larger than average, the best I ever had in Y-class.
I would love to fly with this pitch overseas.

The flyingtime is around 2 hours and the cabin crew is working "along the aisles" from start to landing. First they serve a full-bar-service trolley, then they offer a snackbox with a sandwich (beef or veg) together with some salted bean/crackers and the third round they offer tea/coffee and refill for the drinks. The sandwiches, I tried both, were delicious..compared to other inflight-sandwiches.
Very friendly and outstanding service, always with a "real" smile.
Arrived on time in CPT and parked just outside the terminal, we used
manual stairs and walked on ground from aircraft to the terminal.

No PTVs in the seats. I walked through the C and F cabin during disembarkation and found the Business Class chairs very small and with a small pitch...Does SAA offer Economy Plus seats?

Inbound CPT-JNB
Flightnr: SA325
Aircraft: B340-600
Reg: ZS-ZND
Cabin: Y
Seat: 63F, bulkhead, center
Gate: 2 & 3

This aircraft is so long!
I embarked via the frontdoor and the seatrows are never ending.
A completely brandnew aircraft - you feel the smell, like a new car.
The flight was completely full, around 340 passengers.
I had my bulkhead seat, the first impression was that they are very hard, but after a while not that bad actually.
Flexible headrest and an average recline. The tailcamera is fantastic, the picquality is perfect.
You have the PTV in every seat..but this is not in use during domestic flights, they only show the camera during domestic service.
The entertainmentboxes under the window- and the aisleseats (aisle in the middle-four-sector) are larger than normal. These take almost half the space under the seat in front of you.
I think the seat pitch is rather normal compared to other carriers operating Airbus 340s.
The inflightservice was the same as on the outbound flight, except from the coffeeservice they cancelled due turbulens.

This aircraft was not equipped with the new lie-flat-beds and captain informed this aircraft has had only 160 flying hours.

I hope you will enjoy - I did!

Birka

Nice report  Smile, Its good that you got to fly on the 747-200, SA have started to retire them. I had a glimpse of the A340-600 in February when I was in JNB, its very long!

You had the rare distinction on flying on both the oldest and (at the time of your flight) youngest aircraft in the SAA fleet.

Indeed, you should cherish your flight on ZS-SAN as it was one of the very last flights that aircraft will ever do. The aircraft has been officially withdrawn from service and is operated as a spare/back-up aircraft. It will be flown to Rand Airport sometime in January to serve the rest of its days as a Museum piece.
