We arrived at Terminal 2 at 10.30, and we checked in immediately for FR555 to Dublin. We had no luggage or hand-luggage to check in so it was a quick process. The check in agent typed our conformation number into the computer, and gave us our boarding passes.
The departure lounge was only open at 11:25 for Republic Of Ireland passengers, so me and my mum had a drink in the cafe while we waited. It was now 11:25 so we proceeded to the departure lounge.
Terminal 2 was very busy today with US Airways A330-300, Continental 767-400, PIA 747-300, Britannia 757-200, Air Plus Comet A310 operating BWA 991P, and numerous other aircraft parked on remote stands including Concorde!
I had a look at the departure boards and our flight was estimated to depart at 13:20. Our aircraft TF-ELD parked onto stand at 12:55. The reason that Islandsflug was operating this flight was following the earlier than expected retirement of the 737-200 fleet, Ryanair has been forced to source additional capacity for the winter schedules.
The doors were opened and the passengers disembarked the aircraft, a large queue of passengers appeared at our gate for the flight. The flight was going to be full. Boarding soon commenced and any passengers with small children or babies was called to board first.
We boarded via an air-bridge, the Ryanair cabin crew were at the door welcoming each passenger, we took a seat near the front of the aircraft. The cabin crew made an announcement saying that a range of duty-free goods and snacks was going to be served on this flight and they would distribute the in-flight magazines out to the passengers.
The doors were closed and we pushed back soon after. Engine 2 was started first, then 1. We made a speedy taxi to runway 06L and the flaps were extended to 5. We past the Aviation Viewing Park and waited for a BAe 125 to land.
We turned onto 06L and paused for a second while we awaited take-off clearance. The PF applied 40% power and then applied the required thrust for the take-off, after a roll of about 20 seconds we smoothly rotated. Gear was promptly selected up, and we made a left hand turn towards DUB. Flaps were selected up during the short climb to 16,000 FT.
Cabin crew got the signal to start the in-flight service, and the seat-belt sign was turned off. We leveled out at our cruising altitude, and the Icelandic captain said a few details about our flight. I bought a Coke and a Ryanair pen.
After cruising at 16,000 FT for around 15 minutes it was time to descend into Dublin. The spoilers were extended during our decent, the seat belt sign was switched on and the captain said "Cabin crew 10 minutes to landing". We hit some clouds and had some light turbulence. We came out of the clouds and the flaps were extended to the full position of 40.
The approach was very smooth and soon we passed over the threshold of Runway 10 at DUB. Power was brought back to idle and we flared over the runway and had a nice firm touchdown. We used full reverse and probably autobrake 2 for the landing.
We taxied speedily again to our parking position next to 3 FR 737-200's, Kilkenny EI-CNY was one of them. The cabin crew thanked us for flying Ryanair and we disembarked the aircraft.
The Ryanair cabin-crew were excellent on this flight and the flight was really enjoyable. It was also nice to get on an Islandsflug aircraft, but I would have liked to have flown on a 732 as well though . I will appreciate any questions or comments about my trip report. Thanks for posting this report, great that you got the Islandsflug aircraft! There seems to be quite a variety of 737 "Classics" at Ryanair at the moment. How much did you pay for this trip? I remember, when I was at MAN in May, I wanted to do a daytrip MAN-DUB, but fares were ridiculously high, something like 100GBP one-way - and I had checked the fares *months* in advance. I think these UK - Ireland flights must be the most expensive flights in the Ryanair network...

A great trip report. One thing though - why did FR retire those other planes? Is it really due to structural problems - or is there something else we are not being told? All the same it must be a good bit of variety to fly on a leased 737-400.

I'm sure that Ryanair are telling the truth, that there was scratches found on the fuselage during routine maintenance. It doesn't affect all FR's 732 fleet though. Some Ryanair 737-200's are being kept until early 2005.
It was still great to fly on two of HH's 737-400's though!
