My favorite memory with a defunct airline was back in 1980 on the original Pan Am. I realize the Pan Am name is still flying, but the REAL Pan Am is gone. It was back in 1980, and was my first flight on a 747. It was a flight between IAH and JFK, and I was 7 years old. It was an unbelievable experience for me as a young airplane fanatic to be on such an amazing aircraft for the first time. I distinctly remember my mom standing at the bottom of the stairs to the upper deck watching me as I climbed up and down repeatedly. I was in total awe at the sheer size of the airplane. I'm sure I made the stewardesses lives pure hell. I didn't get the opportunity to fly on a 747 again until 10 years later on TWA (from JFK-MXP), but I never forgot the first time. It wasn't so much the experience of flying with Pan Am, but rather on the 747. Nevertheless, it was undoubtedly my favorite memory of flying on a now-defunct airline.

In 85 I flew roundtrip from IAH-PIT on a USAIR 737-200. That was back in the days when they had that red/brown exterior and all brown seats with those little red and brown squares on the seats interiors. The flight attendants passed out FREE wine, apple and orange juice from a basket as people boarded. Once in the air we were served peanuts with USAir's logo all over the bag and then a BIG chicken dinner, with slices of apples, vegatables and unlimited drinks. More peanuts, a cookie/icecream desert and then time for landing. Same service on the return.
Getting that service nowadays is first class only. The 80s were the good old days of air travel.

I remeber the last time I flew Eastern ORD-MIA-SJU and SJU-ORD all on A300's back in '86. We had serious delays on both trips, but I thought it was fun for some reason. We had to switch planes in MIA because of a mechanical delay and when we boarded the new aircraft, it seemed the airconditioning was off and we were baking in the hot MIA midday sun.
I flew KIWI International MCO-SJU. Flight was half-full but was pretty enjoyable. I remeber landing at SJU and holding for the gate, with some passengers getting up and walking around the cabin while the FA's lost their patience telling them to sit down over the PA.Problem was, their instructions were in English and were apparently being ignored. Finally the FO asked the passengers to be seated in Spanish and everyone sat down until we parked at the gate!
I flew Pro Air first class MDW-DET and back. A 45-50 minute flight, with full meal service. Very nice service.

I have many fond memories of flying on the original PanAm using their 707s,720s, 727s, and 747s. Rome, Brussels, and Copenhagen were my European cities. San Juan, Sao Paulo, and St. Thomas were my Latin American cities. My favorite flight on PA was in August of 1970 on a 720B from Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia, Panama City, Guatemala City, Mexico City, before landing at Houston Intercontinental.
I also flew numerous times on Eastern using their 440s, 600s, DC-8s, DC-9s, 727s, and L-1011s primarily from South Carolina to Puerto Rico.
I flew twice on National (sun king) from New Orleans to Miami (DC-8) and from New Orleans to Pensacola (727).
One long flight on BOAC (707-420C) and Comet 4C back in 1961 if this counts since it and BEA merged to form BA.

I remember as a little kid (9 years old) flying with my mother on Braniff International. My fuzzy memories of the trip:
- Sitting at the gate at DFW waiting to go, looking at an orange 727 sitting next to us that said "Flying Colors".
- Not liking the leather seats because they felt "cold."
- Playing with the orange and purple playing cards (which I still have), and looking at a bright orange timetable.
When I was a little older (15) I flew to see my Dad in New Mexico on the 2nd Braniff from New York to DFW, connecting to American. Attendants served coffee at the gate. I remember the leather seats (all coach 727-200) had fold down tables in the middle. We got a little snack tray with fruit, a bagel, peanuts, and candy. Not bad, but for sure the days of "Flying Colors" was over! This time, I was a little thief, and took everything not screwed down (magazine, safety card, seat occupied sign, soap, napkin, etc.) so now I have a nice little Braniff 2 collection. I remember the crew was very nice, and everyone had Texas drawls! The DFW terminal was still in the old Braniff colors, with rainbows on the walls, and multicolored "BI"s everywhere. Also, the baggage claims had little TV screens that said "The latest UPI News courtesy of Braniff International." This was before Airport CNN!
Now when I fly, I try to remember all the details, because who knows? Next year we'll be sharing our TWA memories!

Allegheny in the old dark blue color scheme. Eastern 727's all over the Carribean. My first flight at 6 years old in a TWA 707 from PIT-JFK. Day trips from PIT-EWR on People's Express (when you paid for your seat while in the air). Southern and North Central and of course Piedmont. Braniff Flying Colors (still love all of the collectable stuff from Braniff today). Finally, the now retired Prinair from Puerto Rico. A Carribean puddle jumper in flying colors. I could go on and on...

I remember flying UTA French airlines LAX-Tahiti return in 1982. A DC10 30 both ways with good food and service, a large plastic tub full of beer and ice out on the floor beside the main cabin door for everyone to help themselves! I also visited the cockpit, the captain said that it was a long quiet route with very little traffic, maybe 10 flights a week between Air New Zealand, Qantas and UTA. A great trip and I loved the colour scheme on those planes, it really stood out.

Way back in 1979 I got the pleasure of experiencing three new things: first international flight, first flight on a 747, and first flight on PanAm.
I flew LAX-HNL-MNL (with a stop in GUM) and back over the summer. I remember being so incredibly excited as we boarded, and in awe when I finally left the jetway and got on board.
The flight left around 8 o'clock, and we arrived in HNL the airport was pretty much shut down, with only a small gift shop open. Our connecting flight (which orginated in SFO) was pretty full. I remember the name as "Clipper Sovereign Seas." Can anybody verify that? We left HNL around midnight and flew to GUM. Up to that point, the longest segment I had ever flown. Of course, I was way too excited to sleep, I was walking around, exploring like kids do.
We finally arrived in MNL early morning. Since the new airport terminial was only in the planning stages at this point, there were no jetways, only mobile stairs!!!!
The terminal was very dilapidated, and the customs officers were pretty indifferent about our luggage. They just waved us through without questioning our reason for being there, how long we were staying, etc.
It was pure chaos!
On the return flight home, our stopover in GUM provided my first opportunity to witness a BN "Big Pumpkin." It too was headed to HNL and LAX and departed just ahead of us. We followed it all the way back to LA.
I spent a month in the Philippines, and constantly recall that trip with fond memories.

I have flown several defunct airlines but I think that Trinidad and Tobago Air Services (TTAS) stands out for me. This airline used HS 748s between Trinidad and Tobago (POS-TAB) on up to 15 daily flights between 1975 and 1980, when it merged into BWIA. As a very young boy then, I remember those red Avros which were very rough and slow, as compared to the DC9's of BW which backed them up on the run. There was little room for service on a flight lasting 20 minutes (12 minutes by DC9) but the flight attendant would pass around and give out dinner mints during the flight. All things considered, that was personable service indeed. The many flights I had with them to visit my Grandma as a boy are occasions which I fondly remember.
Now, TTAS has gone and the airbridge is solely flown by BWIA, following last year's collapse of yet another domestic carrier, Air Caribbean. While Dash 8 Q300s and 737-800s fly the route now, the dinner mints and the innocent magic of childhood are gone.

Braniff, DFW-Quito December 1977; via Miami (change of plane) and Panama City (the old airport- just a stop).
Flight was at night, ex-Panagra DC8 (sorry, I don't know the N-#), fairly full, and I ended up sitting with someone who lived in the dorm across from me at he Univ of Texas, and we befriended another guy who was on break from Vandy; while everyone else slept, we played cards and cut up. The F/A's were just grand, scrounged up a BIG tray of sandwiches when we got hungry. Good way to make friends, and on my way back from South America (where I visited Ecuador, flew SAN/SAETA Caravelle Guayaquil-Quito, then flew BN Quito-Lima, and flew Fawcett BAE-111 from ?? to Lima), stopped off in Panama City for a few days, where one of my southbound seatmates toured me all over the Canal Zone.
Only problem was when I was scheduled to fly home, I had failed to reconfirm 72-hours prior, and BN had given my seat to someone else.
No problem, pulled out my list of important people (including BN station manager), one call, sta. mgr. says, "get back in line, by the time you're up front, they'll be ready to greet you with open arms." Back in line, reached front, attitude-bearing agent copped attitude with "I already told you no seat!" I told her to check again with the shift manager, and - voila!- new attitude and boarding pass ensue.
My mom worked for someone whose influence in South America (and thus, with Braniff) was muy grande.
I thought nothing of it at the time, but now (23 years later) feel bad about having displaced a passenger who followed the rules. If you're out there, well, sorry!
Too long, but funmemory, nonetheless.
Oh, by the way, the Guayaquil - Quito flight was one on which we booked w/ SAETA, but flew on SAN's aircraft, because - really- they borrowed it. The Caravelle (only time I ever flew on one- eat your hearts out!) was ex-Alitalia, very worn, but perhaps the smoothest and quietest flight I've ever experienced, and the cabin crew served home-made cinnamon candy from a dish they passed around. Very fun.
And there was a live turkey in a burlap bag (hole in the bag for its head to stick out) was checked as luggage.

1983, i flew on an TRANSAMERICA DC-8-63 charter flight from JFK-SXM. THe flight was supposed to have left at 9am, but due to a mechanical we didn't leave untill after midnite. When we did push back and the engines fired up , some of the passangers saw some torching . That scared them to hell considering the lenghthy delay. Needless to say they wanted off so we had to go back wait for the jetbridge. I rember the plane being so long and the seats being puke green 3x3 seats We ended up in paradise almost a full day late at 5am. Oh i also took my first 747 trip on PANAM from JFK-MUC in 86.

I lived in the US for one year as a small kid, in 1980. We made a trip Houston-New Orleans-Orlando for Disney World with National Airlines. It were 727s, I think one 727-100 and a -200. At this trip I got my livelong interest in aviation. At the stop in New Orleans, I spent the hour in the cockpit, sitting in the captain seat and chatting with the pilots... a dream for a 9 year old. Later in the P/A's the pilot referred to me, knowing I was on an A-seat he told me/us which cities and sites we'd see.
Later in 1980 we flew Houston (don't know Hobby or IAH, I think Hobby) - Denver- Jackson for Yellowstone park with the original Frontier Airlines. 737, then the Convair 580 scared the hell out of me; my first prop aircraft, shaky, looking old and tired (even the 737 worried me, having only 2 engines compared to the 727s and 747s I only flew on till then). But I remember getting a full meal plate on the Convair. Little did I know then that once I would travel all the way to Alaska especially to fly these 'scary' propellor planes.
In 1991 I flew a Dan-Air BAe 146-100 from Gatwick to Amsterdam. No special memories, only that my view was blocked by the engines.
In 1999 I flew Istanbul Airlines 733 AMS-IST and return. Decent service, on time, clean aircraft, nice food, esp. compared with the chaotic Air Alfa I flew in 1995.
Also in 1999, I visited Alaska and had a wonderful Electra trip with Reeve Aleutians, on their $50 Electra enthousiast fare I could join for the full traject Anchorage-Port Heiden-Sand Point-Anchorage. The F/A's and pilots were friendly and enjoyed someone paying for the fun of joining their service. The on board service was wonderful, big sandwiches the F/A's picked up at the "Subway" near the airport, free booze and refils... Really my heart broke hearing they went bankrupt in December.
On my next trip to the USA, in two weeks, I'm afraid I will add two defunct carriers to be.... I will fly Fresno-Las Vegas with Allegiant DC-9, and Las Vegas-STL-Houston with TWA MD80/DC-9. Beware of my trip report.

Sunways or Turkey were great. I went MAN-IST on my first ever jet flight which was on an MD-83, one of my favourites. I also went NCL-ATY on the same plane. One was home I was in row 37, which is one of the rows that have the engine outside the window, which was quite scary. We moved to front though after takeoff but had to move back at GLA when we landed to stockup and let people off. Shame they went bust too! I loved those weired little Turkish spange cakes they served with what looked like chopped herbs!! The plane is very fast to takeofff and seems to go off at a ery sharp angle.

Sevenair, I also flew Sunways from BHX-Dalaman (DLM?). The flight was pretty cool except over Germany where we experienced some turbulence. The service was great and the a/c was in great condition.
PS I normally fly from NCL,MAN or GLA but it was cheaper to fly from BHX .Pity Sunways went bust.
BTW Does any1 know where there MD83s ended up?

My very first commercial airline flight to vist my grandmother in Missoula, MT over Easter vacation from school. And although I was a minor, I travelled alone. I boarded a Hughes Airwest DC9-30 at SNA for a early morning trip to SLC. I remember the seats were red/blue mesh, and I was in seat 1A. The bulkhead was woodgrain, and there was a huge 'H' embroidered into it.
The FAs were awesome, making all the passengers comfortable and relaxed as they offered up orange juice. I remember the engines hearing engines spooling up at we sat at the end of the runway....and whoosh, with a release of the brakes, we were on our way! I watched so many planes take off from the observation deck at the old SNA, I could hardly believe that I was finally on one of them!
The flight to SLC was perfect! We descended into the Salt Lake Valley and I remember seeing all the farmland below. There was nothing like it Orange County where I grew up. We landed and taxied to the gate, and deplaned once the airstairs were deployed--no jetways yet at the airport. To my surprise, my connecting flight, a Frontier 737-200 was at the very next gate!
I sat at the Frontier gate until my row was called, and I boarded. WOW!!! This gets better and better--I was assigned an exit row! I was nervous and excited at the same time...I kept hoping I wouldn't have to open that thing! The interior was very cool...cowboys riding bucking horses! I think the seats were beige. Again, another great flight, but I was surprised when the captain made an announcement that we would be landing in Bozeman on time. Bozeman? I was headed to Missoula! Little did I know, that Bozeman the enroute stop on our way to Missoula. Hey I was a kid, and I really didn't see any downside; if I didn't get to grandma's, I end up somewhere with a great story to tell.
We finally landed in MSO, and I was sad to see this adventure come an end. But I had the rest of the week to imagine what the return would be like!!!

I remember flying aboard their DC10's from YYZ to LHR to find good service but the flight attendants that we hand were rather on the Bitchy side. But the best service that I had was on A Canadian 737 on route from YHZ to YYZ. But I think my first flight was aboard an Air Canada Jet From YYC to YYZ or YUL I'm not sure because I was so young when I flew.
