I arrived at Taipei's C.K.S. Airport about an hour prior to departure because of heavy traffic on the freeway. My flight was the last one of the day, and the terminal was nearly deserted. The Silver Card check-in counter was closed, so I was directed to use the Gold Card check-in counter. There was no line, and check-in was smooth. I was issued a boarding pass and an invitation to the Evergreen Lounge. My two bags were priority checked to LAX.
Before entering the line for immigration, our temperature was checked. After immigration and security checks, I proceeded to the Evergreen Lounge. EVA Air recently opened the Premium Laurel Lounge for its First Class passengers. The First Class section of the Evergreen Lounge was closed and under renovation. The Business Class lounge looked deserted, and the food was limited. There were some snacks, steamed Chinese buns, and soup. In addition, there was a self-service bar, and a fridge of cold beverages. I grabbed some food, a drink, and an evening newspaper in hopes of making the most of my time before my flight.
About half an hour prior to departure, I headed down to the gate. My passport and boarding pass were checked before I entered the gate. By the time I was in the lower boarding area, boarding had already begun. I entered the line, which moved quickly. Complimentary Chinese and English newspapers were available at the area right before entering the aircraft door.
The Boeing 747-400 was configured with 386 seats in four classes, including 220 Economy seats at 33"/34" pitch and 3-4-3 abreast. At our seat, we were given a headset, a pillow, and a blanket. The blankets were newly-designed and introduced sometime last year. There were no PTVs, menus, overnight kits, or slippers.
Prior to take-off, the flight attendants passed out warm wet towels, and the safety demonstration video was played. Once we were in the air, I asked for a pair of slippers, which the flight attendants promptly gave me. Later, the flight attendants passed out U.S. arrival and customs forms. Shortly afterwards, we were served a pack of nuts with rice crackers and a cold beverage.
About half an hour later, the meal carts were pushed out, and a light snack was served. The choices were chicken with potatoes or fish with noodles. I chose the chicken with potatoes, which came with a warm roll, a salad with Japanese dressing, fresh fruit, and strawberry cake. We had a choice of cold beverages, including red and white wines. Afterwards, when the trays were collected, we were served hot tea and coffee.
After dinner, the lights were dimmed. I totally passed out, so I have no idea what happened during the flight. I'm guessing the flight attendants sold duty free items, and movies were played in the overhead TV screens. I know the flight attendants came around with drinks, because I drank orange juice sometime during the flight. Also, we encountered some strong turbulence, and the fasten seat belt signs were switched on.
About two hours and thirty minutes prior to landing, the lights were turned back on. The flight attendants passed out hot towels and cold beverages. Half an hour later, we were served a hot refreshment. The choices were beef with noodles or pork with rice. I chose the pork with rice, which came with a warm roll and fresh fruit. We also had another small dish, but I do not recall. We had a choice of cold beverages, including red and white wines. Afterwards, when the trays were collected, we were served hot tea and coffee.
After the meal, the cabin was alive again. Some people were still resting, but most people were bustling and getting ready for their arrival into Los Angeles. Once the descent began, the flight attendants collected the headsets.
We arrived early into LAX, and a free gate was shockingly available. The line for immigration was long, but smooth. Our flight had two carousels for baggage, and my bags arrived very quickly.
I enjoyed my flight with EVA Air. However, their long-haul Economy Class product needs improvement. I hope to see PTVs, menus, ice cream, overnight kits, and newer seats soon. In addition, candy during descent would be a nice touch. The hardware used on regional A330-200 flights should definitely be introduced on long-haul 747-400 flights.
