I posted this report on Flyertalk CathayPacific forum. I am reposting it again here on Airliners.net.

I flew CX 881 and 880 last month. Both flights were on the A340-600(HQB). I had the luck to be upgraded to Business on both flights due to overbooked in coach. This was the very first time I have ever flown on CX NBC. This is a summary of my observation on The NBC and the services. I break the report down in several categories.

This was the first time I have been to any OneWorld lounges. The new Admiral Club at LAX is really really nice. I love the shower rooms in the new AC, they are huge and well decorated. I also like the seating areas where you can look out to the tarmac and listen to music with the Bose headphones. The CX lounge at Tom Bradly Terminal was a disapointment. Although I read many poor comments about the lounge, I didn't expect it to be this bad. The lounge is small and the decor is dated. The only nice thing about it is the well-stocked snacks and beverages. At least it has more selection than the Admiral Club. The Wing in HK is beautiful. I love the modern and minimalist decor. The shower facility at The Wing is nice, but it is not as nice as the new Admiral Club in LAX. The Wing shower rooms are pretty small, and there is no shower curtain or door. The whole shower room was flooded with water after I took my shower. My bag and my shoes were soaked with water. Fortunately, I didn't put my clothes on the floor. Also, there was problem with the water temperature; it kept switching from too cold and too hot.

Inflight Service:
The inflight service was excellent and impeccable. The cabin crews never did enough to serve you, and you could really feel that the service was "straight from the heart." On my CX 881 flight, the purser even made a point to greet me personally and acknowledged my Sapphire status (I thought the purser only does this for Emerald or MC Diamond members).

Inflight Entertainment:
I LOVE the AVOD entertainment. The selections of music, short features and commedies are excellent. The Bose look-alike headphone is pretty nice. I know many people on this forum hate it, but I think it is almost as nice as the real one. Maybe I have poor hearing, but I could really tell that it muffled the outside noise.

The Seat:
The seat is really comfortable. Although the seat is on an incline when it is fully extended, it didn't give me a wedgie. The only improvement with the seat I would like to see is maybe storage spaces for shoes and eye glasses. I was assigned to row 18 (bulkhead seats) on both flights. I could tell that the bulkhead seats have less seat-pitch than the others. Also, it got quite noisy there too because of the adjacey to the galley and lavatories, but I didn't mind a bit because I like to see how the cabin crews did their jobs.

I am not sure if it is part of the cutback or simply a new meal style along with the new seat, the portion of the food reduced. I flew CX 881 on the OBC last year. I remember that everything was a la carte. You picked whatever you wanted on the trolly for the main course and the FA would put the food on your round white plate. However, this time on both flights, the main courses were all pre-plate on a rectangular dish and the portion was the same as in coach. The food quality was still very good, but it was the portion that was different. I also noticed that the FAs served all the revenue passengers first and then the upgraded passengers. One thing I want to point out is that the midmight snack they served was Parma ham sandwich and it was very very delicious. I asked for a second serving, but it was all gone. By the way, the flatware was all metal, no plastic knife.

Overall, the service on my CX flights was excellent. I have flown CX many times (mostly in coach) in the last several years and I have never had a bad flight with them. They really deserve the World Best Airline Title!

Besides CX flights, I also flew AA4190 from ORD to LAX in J on the same trip. The flight was the best I have ever experienced in US domestic flights. The flight was on a 767-300. The business class seat was very roomy and the pitch was at least 60". The meal was as good as CX J class class. It had a three courses meal: salad, main course and dessert. The flight attendants were very warm and helpful. I flew a similar route from SNA(Orange County)-ORD in F last year and it was disappointing. The flight was on a 757. The lunch was pathetic. It didn't have any appetitizer and all it had was a chicken salad and a package of Milano cookie. The seat was comfortable but lack of leg room.
