I arrived in DTW on an uneventful flight from MHT at about 11:30am. Once I deplaned I checked the departure information monitor and proceeded to gate A40 which is located in the central part of the new main concourse at DTW. The 744 was still in the old colors and it looked like I had a few minutes before boarding so I decided to visit the central worldclub. I was not overly impressed with this lounge. With the number of flights to Asia departing around this time the lounge was very full with members and WBC passengers. If I were a paying WBC passenger and this was what I got for a lounge it would not make a very good first impression. Anyway I proceeded to stuff some snacks and canned juice in my carryon for later and grabbed a comp. usatoday. Within minutes flight 11 to NRT was announced. I then remembered that I would be spending the next 14hrs or so in Y and dragged myself back to A40. The gate agents began the slow process of boarding the 744. When I boarded and entered the main cabin I was shocked to see a menu on every coach seat. It was on the new northwest letterhead and read as follows.
Beef tips in gravy with mashed potatoes and peas
Pineapple Chicken with steamed rice and green beans
Mid Flight Snack

Southwest Omelet with pork sausage and potatoes
Fried Rice with teriyaki pork
served with fresh fruit, pound cake and Orange Juice
We were delayed on the ground due to some late paperwork from the ground crew and departed about 40min behind schedule. Once airborne flight time was announced at about 13hr 30m and we were told to expect a late arrival into Tokyo because of the hold up at DTW. Soon beverage service commenced along with hot towels. Then dinner was served, I was looking forward to the chicken but they ran out by the time they got to me. I found that pretty poor service considering I wasn't very far back. It would be acceptable at row 50 and higher but 41. Anyway the beef was nasty and the mashed potato wasn't much better, I crammed what I could down knowing this would be all I would eat for the next few hours. After dinner the onboard entertainment began on the main screens. The movies were Ice Age, Santa Clause 2, Tomb Raider, and Spy Kids 3. I may have enjoyed these films if I were 5 years old but considering the median age of my fellow passengers the films were not appropriate. After the first couple of movies the snack service began. It included beverages and a ham sandwich which was quite good. Towards the last quarter of the flight I was impressed at the number of water patrols the FA's did. About an hour out of NRT hot towels were distributed and breakfast service began. I got my choice this time the last fried rice but the poor women next to me looked like she had never seen a southwest omelet before so I traded with her. The omelet was disgusting but I liked the potatoes. Overall for what I paid this was a good flight. The FA's were professional and the seat pitch was just about 32in so I could stretch my legs. Food was not that great but on the return trip the Asian based catering was far better.
