Well, my original plans were to fly to PDX on Feburary 9th...take Amtrak from PDX to MSP in the comfort of a sleeping car...then fly MSP-DEN-MSY on the 11th. That all changed when my mother got a call from our friends in SFO. Our friend is not doing well at all, so I decided to scrap those plans and to book us to SFO instead. He's been too nice to me over the years for me not to go see him.
We left New Orleans on Frontier 833, operated by Airbus A319 N904FR "Swan", seen below....
This flight had a total of 62 passengers on it; consequently, I had the seat next to me open. My mother was in 3C and I was in 3A. Push back was 10min early at 9:10am. We taxiied down to runway 19 and and waited for a Southest 73G to land. Takeoff roll was about 25 seconds, and we used up around 5000 feet of concrete before getting airborne. We cruised due South for about 45 seconds before making a turn to the Northwest. It was a clear say as we followd the winding Mississippi River up past Baton Rouge. We leveled off at FL390. Service commecned shortly thereafter. Two rounds of beverages and a Quaker Oatmeal Bar. I followed the flight tracker for much of the way before going to sleep for about an hour. The flight was very, very smooth. I awoke as we crossed the Colorado border. I had a clear view of the Rockies as we overflew DIA and make a turn to land to the South. Lots of snow on the ground, the temperature was said to be 27 degrees. Final approach and landing were both smooth, only a light wind this morning. We parked at gate A28. This plane would continue on to SEA after a 45 minute break.
At the gate my friend met my mother and I and we had some coffee. She will be flying down to MSY on the 18th for a night or two of mardi gras revelry. Looking forward to that...I could use some happiness right now in my life.
Our flight to SFO departed from gate A36. It was operated by Boeing 737-300 N312FL "Ram" seen below....
Pushback was on time at 12:15pm. This flight was booked to 59 passengers. We had seats 5A and 5C. Takeoff and initial climb were both very smooth. Not many clouds in the area as we started our crossing of the Rockies. Very scenic as usual. We climbed up to FL370. Flying time was said to be 2h and 07min. After downing a Quizno's sub, it was time for another nap, as I knew I would not be getting much sleep for the next couple of days. Landing in SFO was stunning under a clear sky...always one of my favorite approaches, as we came in from the South, right over the bay...reminds me of landing in BOS. We parked at gate 32 next to a Continental 73G.
I'll write about the return flights later today possibly. But for now, time to sleep. Two nights of sleeping in a low-back seat in a hospital is not exactly the most comfortable thing.
