I left Rutgers University at 6AM and hit traffic on the NJ Turnpike in the rain. Checked in at 7AM.

Breakfast

The first cabin on the A320 is actually very nice and modern looking. Flip down LCD monitors and looks much brighter and modern than UAs favourite 757.

The meal on board the short flight to O’hare was fresh fruit and a breakfast croissant sandwich with ham, egg, and cheese. It was actually very good and warm. Definitely enough for the short flight.

In flight entertainment consisted of NBC shows and travel documentaries. Channel 9 (Air Traffic Control) was not turned on for this flight. After eating the meal I took a nap before we landed at O’Hare.

The weather in O’Hare was unusually warm about 45 degrees and raining, unusual for Chicago in February.

In Chicago I saw a massive fleet of United aircraft including a line up of 777 and 747-400s. There was a TED aircraft sitting at one of the gates. I love the current united design and am disappointed in the new one. Basically it is a way to save money on paint I guess.

ORD busy as usual

Some AA planes at ORD definitely not as entertaining as UAs arenal of 777s and 747-400s

Lunch

Business class international configured 777 is better than the regular domestic first. The flight crew was very professional on this flight. The flight continues onto Shanghai and at least a third of the people on board in business class were going on to Shanghai. All of the international amenities were given including electronic noise cancelling headphones, PTVs, and hot towels. The movies all stunk so I put on the airshow and listened to the 15 channels on audio with the noise cancelling headphones. Channel 9 was working on this flight. We were United 857 Heavy.

Lined up ready to go

The choices for lunch were an oriental chicken salad or the deli plate. The majority of people wanted the salad so many that they ran out. I chose the deli plate and was very pleased it was delicious. A warm roll with ham, turkey, swiss, fruit, and a pasta salad.

In business class and first class every seat was taken and in coach 95% full. United hopefully made money off of this flight or they are in trouble!

The united business seat was excellent very comfortable and easy to sleep in. I think in the 777 its worth the upgrade from coach to business but not from business to first unless you really need to sleep on the flight or if its really long.

After the meal and watching airshow and listening to music I took a two hour nap with the business seat in full recline, very comfortable.

San Francisco is a great airport well laid out, easy to get around on the air train, clean and beautiful. San Francisco has a great collection of 747s and 777s from Asia and Europe to look at.

great trip report!

What's the story with this Channel 9? Are they actually "broadcasting" the real ATC? If so, which frequency? Always the one, the PIC is tuned in to?
I wish there were airlines with a feature like that in Europe - I love listening to ATC, so far only close to airports (on the ground..)

Wow nice trip report! Did you visit the cockpits? I sure wish I could fly on United again sometime soon.

Channel 9 has all ATC on it so you can hear other transmissions from other planes too. Just like having a scanner.

I've never actually used it but I think Ch. 9 broadcasts the freq. the cockpit crew is currently using. Basically you can follow them as they swtich frequencies from departure to the various centers used in-flight until approach. Yes, it's like listening to a scanner, but you don't have to change freqs every time your flight is handed off to another freq.

I'm not sure if it's turned on for takeoff and landing or if there are any regulations governing this. Can anyone else clarify?

the pilot can turn channel 9 off or on it his discretion. And yes it broadcasts the frequency the cockpit crew is using.

The pilot can set it to a radio channel if he wants to.
When I flew ORD to BTV during World Series last year they set channel 9 to a radio station they found on the way so we could listen to the game.

Nope, I think Channel 9 is turned ON during Takeoff and landing. You definetely get Cleared for takeff/landing messages on it. One of my favorite things about UA.

Nice Report.

So whether or not you hear the entire flight's communications on 9 is up to the cockpit crew I guess. This leads me to conclude that there are no FARs concerning broadcasting cockpit comm to the pax due to security concerns or whatever. I guess after 9-11, one would expect such a regulation governing this.
