After dragging through the first part of second semester waiting for nothing but this trip, it was finally here. Along the way I took as many pictures as I could. Many turned out worthless but the ones that I thought were at least decent I posted here. (All of the MA photos are mine)

We arrived at the gate a little after the boarding started because we had stopped at a kiosk called InMotion Pictures to rent a portable DVD player. We decided to do this because the 777 that United flies to Honolulu is the domestically configured version with no PTV’s. We rented the DVD player and because the company had no location in HNL, we would have to use their “Jetback” option which means that we would have to drop the player in the FedEx drop box the next day. The whole thing was going to be $29, which is not bad considering it included the player, a movie, headphones, and the shipping back. But alas, I found a loophole. Alaska Airlines has a deal with the company allowing you 25% off so even though we weren’t flying Alaska, we got the deal. Once we were finished there, we headed over to the gate and boarded.

Our family took our seats in rows 24 and 25 and I immediately realized that our seats were over the wing of the mighty 777 that seemed to encompass that entire section of the cabin. I would be seeing very little on this flight.  Sad The pilot came on as we fired up the DVD player, and announced that they were still locating some baggage, which I have noticed is a pretty common announcement at DEN. Runway 16L/34R evaded me again as we taxied to a rolling take off on runway 07/25. We were finally on our way to Hawaii.

The flight attendants came around about 20-25 minutes after takeoff with drinks. The past couple of times I have flown United, instead of pouring my drink in the glass and then passing it to me, the FA will give me the can along with a glass of ice. It is a little bit nicer in my opinion, because this way you are assured an entire can of soda. After this run through the cabin, they came around again with a HOT lunch, which was nice. It was mashed potatoes with meatloaf and a tomato sauce with peas on the side. A salad was also included. Unfortunately, no Milano cookies were included with this meal, just some “Raspberry Shortbread."  Sad

At this point, two girls sitting in front and to the left of me started painting their fingernails. They were probably seated in 23F, G. The smell of the nail polish remover was so strong, that it got very annoying. The IFE started at about this time, with NBC inflight coming playing on the main screens. A bunch of stuff was on for about an hour and a half until Frasier came on.  Smile I couldn't even tell you what was on except for Frasier. This round of video took us just off the coast of California, where we began the “Half Way to Hawaii” game, where the captain gave us the information including normal flight time, airspeed, headwind, and nautical miles of the trip. Everyone calculated the exact time (Hawaiian) that they though we would be geographically Halfway to Hawaii and then filled out the entry forms along with the Hawaii agriculture forms and turned them into the Flight Attendants. When this was finished, the movie started on the main screens, which was perfect timing, because my brother and I had just finished Runaway Jury on the portable player. The movie was Cheaper by the Dozen, with Steve Martin, and it was pretty predictable. It occupied our time for the next our and a half or so. At the conclusion, Flight Attndants came around with a snack box, which had a roll with turkey and cheese, along with a mini Toblerone. All in all, pretty good for a snack because although it was only about 1:30 Hawaii time, it was nearing 5 in Denver, and we were quite hungry.

At this point, we had about two and a half hours left on the flight, and I began to read a book, while my Brother watched another movie on the player. The winner of the “Half Way to Hawaii” game was announced and the winner was in seat 3H – First Class, go figure. With about two hours left in the flight, I had switched up to 24J to have a better view of the window. For about 2/3 of the flight over the water, we had been in clouds. We began our descent and it was easy to see water condensing on the engines. It was especially cool because as the flaps were changing little vortexes of water would go over the wing in different ways, much like those photos you have seen on this website with streaks coming off of planes’ winglets. While we were still about 10 minutes out of Honolulu, the clouds finally parted and the first thing we saw was the island of Oahu.  Smile We banked for a turn over Kalaeloa Airport (John Rodgers Field) and glided in for a landing on either runway 22R/4L, or 22L/4R.

After a short taxi, we were at our gate. We were there along with another UA 777, a Omni Air International 757 and a North American Airlines 757. I asked a Flight Attendant if it would be a problem for my brother and I to see the cockpit. She said that that would be fine and led us up to the cockpit and let us take pictures. I guess after seven hours locked up in a cockpit there are some things you need to take care of, because the cockpit was empty and two of the lavatories next to the cockpit were occupied. We snapped a couple of photos, but because the cockpit was somewhat dark, my dumb camera wanted to flash. This means that I either got highly fluorescent views of the cockpit, or I could turn off the flash, but that automatically disabled the auto focus.  Angry One of the pilots came out of the lav behind us and seemed none to pleased that we were in the cockpit, even though the FA was right there with us. He just kind of scowled and didn’t say a thing. I can say that United's 777 is easily my favorite aircraft in terms of configuration. Nothing can beat 2-5-2 for a familty of four.

At this point, we had two options, we could ride the Wiki Wiki bus to the inter-island terminal, or we could walk there. The walk was not too long, but we decided to take the bus. As we were riding away, I realized that if I had walked I would have had a perfect elevated view of a NW DC-10, straight from the side, completely unobstructed. L Nevertheless, we continued on the Wiki Wiki bus, which could easily be called the “Squeaky Squeaky” bus. We headed down to Burger King, seeing an array of 717’s and 732’s on our way. On our way to the gate, we noticed the ALI’I club, which had a sign saying that First Class ticket holders got in free. Lucky us. We booked our trip on miles back in June, but had not done the Inter-island flights at that time. By the time we did those, all that was left was first class, so we had to pay 10,000 miles per person for all of our Inter-islands instead of 5,000. Inside the club, there was a basket of Muana Loa’s and a machine with Fountain Drinks and more importantly; Guava Nectar.  Smile The whole place was decorated pretty nicely, although there was no view of the tarmac. There was a video of a Lu’au being played as well on a flat screen TV in the corner. After sitting down for about 10 minutes, we headed down to gate 52 and boarded our flight.

After the plane had boarded, we had a quick taxi over to a rolling takeoff on again, either runway 22R/4L or 22L/4R. We banked to the East and headed towards Maui. There were a ridiculous amount of whitecaps on our way; it almost looked like there were just thousands of little bits of paper floating in the water. Service was basic, we were given a choice of Guava juice, and Coke products. I took the Guava of course. This flight was only about 20 minutes long, and before long we were able to see Maui. We landed from the south, coming over Wailea, Kihei, and the like. Landing was smooth, although as soon as we touched down, we realized that it had been raining pretty hard. Unfortunately, this rain lasted for the next two days, and a little bit into the third.  Sad

After a nice four day stay on Maui, we were off to the second portion of our vacation on Kauai. We drove up to the airport and got everything checked in. It was invaluable having the first class tickets, because instead of having about 100 people in line ahead of us we had none. After the check-in, we proceeded to the TSA line, where an agent approached us and said, “A family selected together sticks together,” and thus we had to pass through secondary screening. When we were finished with that, I walked down the Hawaiian end of the terminal and snapped a couple of pictures – they are in the queue. Then I walked back down the Aloha branch of the terminal and found a Hawaiian 767 prepping for a flight to SEA. When I was finished, I returned to our gate and prepared to board.

As I was waiting, an Aloha 737-700 came in from some destination in California and pulled one of the landings where one wheel bounces back up off the runway while the other remains on the ground. A few minutes later our arriving flight came in a little late, and as a result, we boarded about 10 minutes late.

Ironically enough, this plane was delivered to Lufthansa some 20 years ago and only a week earlier than N821AL which my last segment was on. As we were waiting for everyone to board, two pilots came on board and sat in seats 2A and 2B, directly in front of me. Based on their conversation, it was obvious that they were the pilots that had just brought in the 700 series. About 10 minutes later, one of them got off the plane and another guy came on board. Apparently there was a problem with the standby list and there was another non-rev in front of him. At this time, we were about 20 minutes late and the pilots went ahead and began the taxi. We followed a flight-path over the northern end of Maui, and I was able to see a cruise ship that had anchored itself up by Kaanapali. The service was again pretty basic, and I elected for the Guava juice. About 20 minutes after take off, we came to a smooth landing at HNL. We parked at gate 52 I believe, and the majority of the passenger deplaned. The pilot came out of the cockpit and started talking with the pilot in front of us. There conversation was interesting. They were discussing the quirks that each of the Trans-Pacific aircraft had. They referred to them by their tail numbers – 739, 741, etc. Thirteen people remained on the plane and boarding commenced again. Once the plane was full, we taxied to a rolling takeoff on the reef runway. After we were airborne, the FA told us all about the runway and how it had even been selected as an alternate landing site for the space shuttle. This flight was almost identical to the last one, and was sunny the whole time.

When we neared Kauai however, the skies darkened and we ran into a wall of clouds. About 20 seconds before our landing, visibility was probably still at about 200 feet, but it opened up significantly before the runway. We came to a safe landing on runway 17/35 and taxied over to our gate. I had hear that some airlines like Aloha will use airstairs in occasions where the need the passengers deplaned quickly. This would be an ideal time for them to do that, I thought to myself. The FA came on and announced however that we would only be getting off through the Jetway. L Moments after, though, he returned to say that in the rear of the plane passengers would be deplaning via airstairs. Seconds later, rain started, and he came on yet again to crush any hope of deplaning onto the tarmac. We deplaned and claimed our bags in carousel A. The second half of our Hawaiian vacation had begun.

After a rainy, yet enjoyable stay on the Garden Isle, it was time to return to the mainland and the real world. We headed out to LIH at about 9:00pm for our 10:30pm departure. The entire United operation here was run like clockwork. We were checked in about 15 minutes after we arrived – although we did use the premier line – and we headed up to the gate. The LAX departure was lined directly aside from our plane and it left about 20 minutes before our boarding commenced.

Boarding was supposed to begin at 10, but the staff began it early, realizing that passengers were not too fond of sitting in the gate area and losing precious sleeping time. My parents got upgraded to First Class, while my brother and I were stuck in the hellish 31 inch seat pitch that is basic economy. Even more frustrating was that three rows in front of us was the exit row with about 45 inches of seat pitch that my parents had been confirmed in before their upgrade. By about 10:10, the doors were shut and we had powered down runway 03/21 on our way to SFO. The plane was prepped well, each seat had a fresh pillow and blanket and the plane included the adjustable winged headrests. About 30 minutes after departure, Flight Attendants came around with drinks – this would thankfully be the only service on this flight. The movie was Disney’s Haunted Mansion, which I did not even try to watch. By the time the movie was over – about 2 hours after takeoff – I had not slept at all even though I had been trying to the whole time. I basically had two choices for seating; sit perfectly straight and try to fall sleep sitting with my weight on my back – something I have never been good at, or jerk my right leg underneath the immobile armrest on my right – cutting off all blood circulation in the process – and try to sleep twisted about 5º to the right. Needless to say, neither worked. For the remaining two and a half hours of the flight, I drifted in and out of slumber, being awakened about every twenty minutes either by uncomfort or my brother’s pillow hitting my face. I was awoken abruptly by the sounds of the flaps adjusting for landing. The pilot came on saying “Flight Attendants, prepare for landing,” and the cabin lights were turned on. We came to a smooth landing in dormant San Francisco and pulled to a stop at gate 85. We headed over to gate 81 and waited for flight 480 to board.

While we were waiting to board, my dad prowled on up to the ticket counter – a plan hatching in his mind. He returned about 5 minutes later holding four certificates four a free flight within the 48 states. It was 6:00 in the morning (4 AM in the time zone we were used to) and my dad had just volunteered us to be denied boarding. The only flight we could be confirmed on was one leaving at 11am, so it appeared that we would be spending 6 hours in the San Francisco airport. Now on a normal occasion, this would not be bad news for an aviation “enthusiast,” but today I was just exhausted and I wanted to get home. There are/were two good things about this however, first of all, the 11:10 flight was a 777 and we had been confirmed in business, and second, the fact that we received four free tickets means that our trip this summer will not be a road trip and that you will have the chance to read another one of my enlightening Trip Reports later this summer.  Big thumbs up We spent the next two hours at the gates for two other flights to DEN, each time discovering that the flight was full. After we realized that the 6:50 AM flight was also full, we had a couple of hours on our hands. My brother and I had heard that the new International terminal was pretty nice and we had seen an ANA 777 and numerous United 747s taxi by so we decided to give it a look. We went to the Airtrain – which is very similar to the underground train In DEN, only it’s above ground, and slower – and rode it over to the international terminal. We didn’t know if we would be able to get past the security check point since we only had tickets for a flight departing from Terminal 3, so we consulted with a man at the information counter and upon his advice we gave it a shot. The guy had no problems, he simply told us not to go to the duty free shop, buy any food, or gasp, go to the gates. Well, I guess it was wishful thinking on his part. The only thing I don’t understand is how we made it all the way to the gates without a passport – maybe I am just not very informed about customs procedures. We explored the A concourse for a while before realizing that the only plane there was a Northwest DC-10. I snapped a pic of Terminal 1, and then we returned to the main area of the International terminal, hoping to get into Concourse G.



When we arrived however, it became apparent that that was not going to happen, because we had 40 minutes until the flight to Denver boarded and the TSA line for concourse G was enormous.  Sad We hopped back on the train and about 20 minutes later, we were boarding our flight to DEN.

The flight boarder on time, and man was it packed. We took a seat and were offered Orange juice and water. The rest of the plane boarded, and we taxied in line to a powerful takeoff on runway 1R/19L. About 20 minutes after departure, drinks were passed out, along with warm towels. Next, the FAs came around and placed napkins on the tray tables followed by a choice of eather a Deli Plate or a Caesar Salad. I am not a big salad eater so I opted for the deli plate. It had a warm roll with a warm cookie and roast beef, turkey, cheese, pickle, and potato salad. The closest image I can find is this, which pretty much does it justice, only the cookie was better:

After this, we pretty much relaxed in the nice seats. For a description of the seats, see my TR on the DEN-SFO flight this Christmas. About 20 minutes out, we started getting some moderate chop and it continued all the way into our landing on runway 8/26. After a short taxi, in which I observed an Air Wisconsin CRJ in the new c/s, we arrived at our gate and our trip was finally over.

And now, after hours of writing, this TR is over. I hope you enjoyed it, and please excuse my numerous errors and short windedness towards the end – I got rather tired. Any comments at all are appreciated. Also, if you happen to have any idea why a 767 would be downgraded from an ER to a non please post as well.  Big thumbs up

(As a sidenote, all of my pics you saw on here wereinitially submitted to A.net and sunsequently rejected. Perhaps I need a camera that is more than 2 MPBig grin

Are you sure about the runway you landed on in HNL? Your photo of Kalailoa looks like you're on the approach to 8L. If you had landed on 4R your approach would have been over water.

Thanks alot. If I get a chance to go to the mediterranean sea I would come there! The trusty 732 was great - gotta love a plane you can see smoke trails on - but I would have loved to flown on Hawaiian just to get on my First 717. :/

Looking at it now, it probably was 8L. We came straight up over to Kaleola then made a hard bank right over land. To land. Another thing that I think confirms it is I have a blurry photo of a Kalitta Air 747 that I took upon landing that appears to have two runways in the front of it - which are probably 04L/22R or 04R/22L.

Top stuff. A first rate trip report (wish mine were this good!) with loads of detail and some great photos. Sounds like you had a good trip.

Off to Hawaii tomorrow. Very excited - will likely do some inter-island flights as well now. Gotta go on a 737-200 - not many left in my neck of the woods now.

Great trip report !
A 767 or any other model can get downgraded for several reasons.
Sometimes it is because of the reliability of one of the engines or the apu is in doubt.
Sometimes its because an etops critical component has been changed and needs a verification flight before being returned to er status.

Off to Hawaii tomorrow. Very excited - will likely do some inter-island flights as well now. Gotta go on a 737-200 - not many left in my neck of the woods now.

A 767 or any other model can get downgraded for several reasons.
Sometimes it is because of the reliability of one of the engines or the apu is in doubt.
Sometimes its because an etops critical component has been changed and needs a verification flight before being returned to er status.

I must agree with everyone this is truly one of the best TRs I have ever read. Excellent details and pictures. I have almost always found flights from SFO to DEN to be packed and choppy as you suggested.

Great job. Welcome to my respected users list. All the long haul TRs I've read about UA have been pretty favorable. Personally, I'm partial to Delta and US Airways.

Never been through DEN before, so is it really as far from civilization as it looks? Every pic I've ever seen makes it look like its out in the middle of a farm field.

Well, yes, DEN is far out there. It is next to a dump, although that is barely noticible in relation to the other fields in the area. It is only about 10 minutes from civilization though. I live in the southern suburbs of Denver, and the trip is consistantly 45 minutes - not too bad at all.

widebody: great report - just a short answer for your passport question: passports will be checked a check-in for international flights.

depending on the airport, there is another photo-id check at either the security checkpoint or at the gate.

Well I just found out that I get to fly F9 Non-revenue from DEN-SJC (most likely on a 318  Big thumbs up ) and SFO-DEN. I leave on Friday. I will be sure to post a TR asap, and hopefully I can get some pictures from the trip accepted because I just got a new camera! One other thing, after reworking the image a little, I got my picture of PJR accepted into the a.net database. I am feeling the need to plug it now  Laugh out loud
