I hadn't been on a A340 yet so I thought I would give Lan Chile a try to Auckland. Cheap ticket, $181.00 one way through the travel agent, (still get QF points). Got the agent to assign me a window seat 33L. Checkin and boarding was standard, THEN I sat down and oh my god, these seats had the smallest leg room I have ever seen. I am not the tallest person, but my knee caps were touching the seat pocket in front of me!! Very squashed in. The crew were average and so was the meal, but one thing I have to give LA credit for is their entertainment system, on demand movies for Y class. But there is no way I could fly to Chile in those seats!!! But at least now I've been on a A340-300. So if you're tall, maybe give LA a miss. I fly Virgin Blue regularly and there is more leg room on them!! Departed and arrived on time.

My return trip was on a Emirates B777-300 from Akl-Bne. Checked in 3 hours before and was given seat 24A, 1st window after door number 3 over the wing. The 1st thing I noticed was the leg room - plenty compared to LA!!! I could comfortably stretch out. I was lucky enough to get 3 seats to myself. I have flown Emirates previously and of course the service was friendly as always and the meal was quite nice. EK also have a good entertainment system, but no on demand for Y class. I saw a Air Tahiti Nui A340-300 in Akl, my 1st in person. Overall a good quick trip. Departed and arrived on time.

Thanks for the report. I also recently flew to AKL and wanted to fly LA or AR but at the last minute had to settle for another airline. On the way back from AKL to MEL I had the pleasure of flying EK's 772 and enjoyed the IFE (including external cameras) and the meal service. I am thinking of heading out to AKL again so that I can also fly on an A340.  Smile

P.S. I will post my trip report soon. It was lots of fying in a short period of time.

QF747, you could always try getting upto Sydney then catching a nice new A340-500 across to Auckland, I'm sure that'd please you.

Rendezvous, I might even wait a while longer and then the A340-500 will be heading via MEL to CHC.

On a side note does anyone know why China Eastern has a QF codeshare flight number on the MEL-SYD route?

china eastern has a code share QF flight number cuz it has codeshare agreement with qantas. the QF337/338 are services between SYD/PVG operated by china eastern, the newly launched china eastern PVG/MEL/SYD/PVG could well have code share with qantas as well. i think the mel/syd sector is due to that flight. take me wrong if i am.

By the way, the trans-tasman EK services are my favorite. Glad to hear EK will fly to CHC, so i might try it. I've heard from somewhere that EK is studying the feasibility to continue flights onward from AKL to NAD, LAX and south america, making AKL as an important hub.will be glad to c that
