LGW-GVA Trip - Review Given To B.A.

I've had a few awful shorthaul flights with B.A. lately. Yesterday night, I boarded in a very bad mood (I however tried ot remain nice to the FA of that flight who had nothing to do with it.).

THen, just after boarding, I was handed a survey sheet, asking me my opinion about BA. Most of it was multiple choice questions, but there was an open question, asking me what went particulary wrong with that flight.

here was my answer, perfect copy of what I wrote during the first 15 minutes of the flight.

*The outbound trip last friday was flown on a BA146. I don't appreciate the fact of flying in an aircraft built to seat 5 people abreast, yet seating 6 people abreast with B.A.
Leaving one hour late, I was quite unhappy to be seated on an aisle seat while there wew available window seats upfront (rows 7,6 ...). Even one hour late, the flight crew did not allow me to seat there.

*The cheese sandwitch that I asked happened to be half smaller than the meat one. This discrimination is simply not acceptable.

*I wanted to check in early at LHR today (flight leaving from LGW). This was not possible. I was unimpressed by the fact that electronic tickets can check in on the web but not from anther airport B.A. self-checkin.

*Upon check-in at LGW, the self-checkin only offered middle seats, while once in the aircraft, there was actually one window seat left (in Y, not in C).

*I was unimpressed by the fact that the A319 we should have been flying tonight was replaced by a 737-500 (536 ? I'm not even sure...)

*Overall, you might have read one very positive review from me earlier. That was three flights ago. Those last 3 flights were blatantly awfull for me, and I am revising my opinion on B.A.

*If any question, do not hesitate to email me (email adress removed from a.net copy)

Well it seems this is nothing new - these are the usual problems that one might expect to encounter when flying any major airline, although it seems unfortunate that you encountered 3 bad flights in a row.

However, despite your problems, my opinion of BA is unchanged; I think that generally speaking, they are a very good airline.

regards

Well, my opinion one month ago was that they were a very good airline.

Now, I just think they are very good for long haul, but that a lot of thing are wrong with the short haul.
I'll now try to stick with AF...

Have a good rest of the day in Elbonia!

I hope (for them) they are contacting me. I left them my personal email and phone number in that view !

It is a great shame you have had 3 bad flights with BA in a row,I think its just plain unlucky. For myself, the last 36 flight with BA,both long and short haul, the shorts being from LGW,LHR and MAN have all been great.

Isn't BA planning to remove the BAe146's from the fleet? If I'm not mistaken, also the DHC8 will go (they want to become an all-jet fleet).
I would like a correction when I'm wrong: the LGW based B737's would go to MAN (with LGW becoming an A319 airport), and the MAN based DHC8's + RJ100's would be phased out.

*The cheese sandwitch that I asked happened to be half smaller than the meat one. This discrimination is simply not acceptable.

Strange indeed... I would have asked for a second sandwich!

*I wanted to check in early at LHR today (flight leaving from LGW). This was not possible. I was unimpressed by the fact that electronic tickets can check in on the web but not from anther airport B.A. self-checkin.

Why didn't you try at a check-in counter?

*Upon check-in at LGW, the self-checkin only offered middle seats, while once in the aircraft, there was actually one window seat left (in Y, not in C).

It's very well possible that the pax of the window seat did not show up for the flight. Can you blame BA for this? In an other thread, you wrote that you had almost missed check-in, which means that almost all pax had already checked in. Quite logic that all window seats were taken at that time?

I was unimpressed by the fact that the A319 we should have been flying tonight was replaced by a 737-500 (536 ? I'm not even sure...)

So the first A319's of BA are already based at LGW? Anyway, if they are already based at LGW, only a very few flights are operated by them. It is perfectly possible that BA switched your flight to a B735 for operational reasons (the inbound flight of the aircraft was maybe delayed? Maybe technical problems?). As a passenger, you can't "ask" BA to put you on a specific aircraft. Aircraft changes are something we have to life with... Can you blame BA for this?

*Overall, you might have read one very positive review from me earlier. That was three flights ago. Those last 3 flights were blatantly awfull for me, and I am revising my opinion on B.A.

It is of course your choice to revise your opinion of BA, but I find that your arguments are not strong enough to blame the airline. For me it is important to get a nice crew (I did not see a complaint about this, so I guess you got a good crew? Even then, every airline has bad crews! I had a horrible crew on a BA flight last year, but they are still one of my favourite airlines!). Also important is a good service (a pity about the small sandwich), on time flights (but delays happen on every airline, and one hour delay is not that much) etc etc.

It would be nice to read more about your other bad BA experiences! (This is about one flight, what went wrong on the other 2?)

Regards
Frederic

No, you wouldn't had. THey were quite bad actually.

Why didn't you try at a check-in counter?

I did, they told me that "maybe, I could get re-assigned on a LHR flight if I wanted". Why not. All I had to do was ask at the ticket counter located at another part of the terminal. I went there, queued (not to long fortunately), and was told that they would not put me on another flight.
Heck, *they* had done that suggestion, not me.
So I went back to the check in counter, re-requested the checkin, only to get it refused that time.
3 queues for nothing... always nice.

It's very well possible that the pax of the window seat did not show up for the flight. Can you blame BA for this?

that seat was available according to a printed paper the urser checked on boarding. That seat was actually not allocated.

In an other thread, you wrote that you had almost missed check-in, which means that almost all pax had already checked in. Quite logic that all window seats were taken at that time?

That is the main reason I wanted to check in early at LHR. The impossibility to check in at LHR is one of the main reason I arrived late at LGW (3 queues for nothing, as stated above). Then the bus connection from LHR to LGW was late and slow, but I don't blame B.A. for that. I just blame them for making me miss the earlier bus.

. For me it is important to get a nice crew (I did not see a complaint about this, so I guess you got a good crew? Even then, every airline has bad crews! I had a horrible crew on a BA flight last year, but they are still one of my favourite airlines!)

I did not write it on the handed report, because I don't like to incriminate the crews. But I made an experiment on that flight : I pressed the FA call button (I usually don't do that, and wait for the FA to pass by if I have a request) and timed the reaction time. No FA showed up for 5 minutes... I was unimpressed. If it was a medical emergency, somebody could have died in those 5 minutes.
