I booked my Ticketless Award in early March via the Rapid Rewards hotline because the website wasn't working for me. In about mid-March, I needed to change my travel date, and the task was completed easily without additional fees or taxes. By the time I was traveling, Online Check In had become system-wide. I was fascinated by Southwest's Online Check In, so at 12:10 AM, I promptly checked-in for my flight and printed my "A" boarding pass.

When I arrived at the airport about an hour prior to departure, I was hoping to check my bags to Austin. However, the lines at the counter and curbside were incredibly long, so I passed on checking my bags. I joined the security line, which almost extended outside. Fortunately, the line moved quickly, and I was inside the terminal area in almost five minutes.

I checked the monitors for my gate, but I still had quite a bit of time to burn. I headed to McDonald's and spent too much money on a Chicken McNugget meal. There were no more seats in the gate area, so I used my luggage as a table. I decided to stand in line, and when boarding began about 25 minutes prior to departure, I was able to grab a window seat in row 4.

The nightmare began after I sat down. After 15 minutes past our departure time, the Captain came on the intercom notifying us about a mechanical problem. Mechanics were already working on the problem. 20 minutes quickly passed, and the doors were closed and armed. The flight attendants did their safety demonstrations, and the lights were dimmed. Shortly after the aircraft in front of us took off, we taxied onto the runway. The Captain powered the engines, and I thought we were taking-off. However, the engines were kept at minimum, and we made a huge U-turn back to Terminal 1. The Captain returned on the intercom, and he said the problem had re-emerged. We returned to the gate. After 15 minutes or so, a Customer Service Coordinator came on board updating us on the situation. The mechanics have decided to replace the part, and we would not need a change of aircraft. 15 minutes later, we were on our way to the runway.

Whatever happened on the ground was easily made up by Southwest's in-flight service. We were asked for our choice of beverage, and I chose apple juice. I got the whole can of Minute Maid Apple Juice and a snack pack. The snack pack included Planters Toast Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Lorna Doone Shortbread Cookies, and Teddy Grahams Cubs. I was pleasantly surprised since I only expected two packs of peanuts.

I was so tired that I fell asleep after giving my trash to the flight attendants. When I woke up, I was thirsty, so I asked the flight attendants for some more apple juice. Another can of apple juice came with a cup-full of ice. Wow! I felt so spoiled.

We began our descent into the evening Austin sky. The flight attendants came by one last time to collect all their service items. It felt so good to be in Austin especially since the flight was delayed for over an hour. I enjoyed the flight, although the delay was a little disappointing.

I checked-in online at about 12:05 AM local time. I could online retrieve the boarding pass ("A") for my first segment. Unfortunately, I would have to check-in at the gate in Houston/Hobby for my final flight into Chicago/Midway. I left my friend's apartment near UT Austin at 5:10 AM and arrived in about 20 minutes to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. I directly proceed to the security checkpoint, which already had a line. Security was smooth, and in no time, I was already waiting at the gate.

After I settled down in a seat, I saw people carrying cups of coffee from behind the gate counter. It looked liked complimentary coffee, but I wasn't sure, so I didn't check it out. Lines for boarding began about half an hour before departure, and I joined the line for Group A. About 20 minutes prior to departure, a ground agent came on the PA and told us that boarding would be delayed because of heavy fog in the Houston area. I was concerned, since I had a 55 minute connection in Houston. However, about five minutes later, the ground agent announced that the Captain has decided to board the aircraft.

I was able to get a window in one of the rows closer to the front. The safety demonstration was completed, and we were quickly in the air. Once airborne, the flight attendants announced that service would consist of a beverage, either coffee or orange juice. When they came down the aisles, I saw many people pass on the beverage. I chose the orange juice, and it was refreshing.

We quickly began our descent, and we arrived at our Houston/Hobby gate after a short taxi. This was a quick flight, and I'm glad we weren't delayed because of the fog. We actually arrived a couple minutes ahead of schedule.

After arriving from Austin, I checked the monitors for my flight to Chicago/Midway. My flight was departing from Gate 50, and I walked over to check-in. The agent gave me my "C" boarding pass, which had the words "Transfer" printed on it. This was my first "C" on Southwest, but of course, it was my first time making a connection with Southwest. I sat down for a while, but I decided to join the line for Group C.

When boarding commenced, there seemed to be a million "A" and "B" passengers. I was able to secure a window seat in the last row. I was so tired, I began to nap. When I woke up, at least half an hour had passed, but we were still on the ground. The Captain came on the PA. We were delayed because our aircraft was too heavy. We had a full flight, including many high school band students and their instruments. We were finally in the air about an hour late. I'm not surprised about Southwest delays anymore, since I seemed to always experience them.

When we were airborne, I was hoping for another snack pack, but I was only given a cup of orange juice and a pack of animal crackers. I decided to take a nap, and to my dismay, my seat would not recline. Fortunately, the window seat made my flight somewhat more comfortable. However, the lady in the middle seat next to me wasn't too happy or comfortable. I woke up to the flight attendants passing out peanuts. To my surprise, I received a pack of honey-roasted peanuts. I love honey-roasted peanuts, and a friend said she received honey-roasted peanuts on her Southwest flight between Los Angeles and Oakland. The new peanuts definitely beat the old salted peanuts.

As we began our descent, the flight attendants collected our trash. One of the flight attendants began passing out plastic wings to members of the high school band. We arrived in Midway about 50 minutes behind schedule. Chicago Midway Airport was a nice airport and was more modern than I expected. I ran quickly to the Chicago Transportation Agency (CTA) subway station to catch a train to Chicago O'Hare. My, it was cold in Chicago. I enjoyed this Southwest flight, although the limited recline and delay wasn't very nice.

Yeah, the last row of seats in airliners generally does not recline.

Too bad about the delays- I liked my Southwest experience last summer, and was delayed only by weather.

Do you know what they did to solve the overweight situation? LOL about the high school band students as I was one and am now one in college.

sounds like a great flight. I love WN and hope to have more expriances with them. I am so happy that you got to go on my favorite 737 the 300 series.

I think to resolve the overweight situation, they offered some passengers to transfer their luggage to a next flight with some compensation.

I enjoy flying the 737 on short-haul flights as well. However, I'm starting to enjoy the newer next generation 737s more. Its all good though!
