I fly Delta whenever I go home to Atlanta, just b/c of the convenience...and somewhat b/c I'm biased. This time, I had to change planes in Cincinnati, which was very strange considering the flight time between CMH and CVG is roughly about 29 mins. Anyway, here's the skinny:

Thursday, April 8, 2004
-Delta Airlines flight 1083, CMH-CVG
-B757-200 (didn't get the reg #) with the new livery
-scheduled departure, 4:55pm; departed CMH: 5:01pm from gate C55
-arrived CVG: 5:30pm, at gate A7
-seat 32D

The ATC at Atlanta Center held us at the gate in Columbus for an extra 10 mins or so b/c of the high volume of ATL arrivals.

Why they used a 757 for the short hop to Cinci, I'll never know. I guess it didn't matter, considering that the plane was pretty much full except for a few open seats here and there. The weather in Columbus was pretty nice that day, in the 60's with sun and a nice breeze, but ascent out of CMH on 28R was pretty choppy until we got to our cruising alt of 10,000 feet. Even then, it was hazy all the way to CVG. The inflight service was the Fast Break service b/c of the short flight. We headed just east of downtown Cinci, made a turn to the west and then back to the north right before landing with a bumpy touchdown on 36R.

My wife and I deplaned and decided to get some food at the Max and Erma's on Concourse A. While waiting for our food, I took a quick stroll to find a newspaper stand and to check out Concourse A. I've been to CVG a couple times, but had only come in and out of Concourses B and C (where Comair is). For those of you who haven't traveled through CVG, it's a very nice airport...clean and fresh, but Delta dominant (one of DL's other hubs). It has a people mover modeled after the one in ATL, but it goes really slow (like 10 mph) and only travels a very short distance. Riding on it is like watching a big-budget movie with a story that goes nowhere. It's pretty lame!

On my little stroll through Concourse A, I noticed it has a Wolfgang Puck Cafe, which is supposed to be excellent. I was bummed that I didn't see it before we went to Max and Erma's.

We ate and headed down to our gate for the CVG-ATL leg. Here's the info:

Thursday, April 8, 2004
-Delta Airlines flight 755, CVG to ATL
-B767-300 (again, no reg #...sorry!) with the new livery
-scheduled departure 7:25pm; departed CVG 7:50pm from gate A28
-arrived ATL 8:54pm at gate A2
-seat 32F

I had never flown on a B767 before, so this flight was a treat for me. Again, the inflight service was the Fast Break service. We departed CVG on runway 27 and turned south toward ATL, passing over Nashville, TN and headed east of downtown ATL. We then turned to the east and then made a U-turn back west for an arrival, over the Ford Taurus plant, on 26R. I always love flying into ATL on a clear night...the skyline looks great!

Easter weekend with family was wonderful in the suburbs northeast of Atlanta, with sunny weather (until Easter Sunday, then rain) and temps in the mid 70s. But, today it was time to head back to the crappy Ohio weather with gray skies and temps in the 40s when we landed.

Monday, April 12, 2004
-Delta Airlines flight 2142, ATL to CMH
-B757-200 (N627DL...I think...couldn't see it that well) with the old livery
-scheduled departure, 8:13am; departed ATL 8:32am from gate A25.
-arrived in CMH at 9:58am at gate C55, 18 mins later than scheduled
-seat 24B (unfortunately)

We got to Hartsfield at a little before 7am, after spending over an hour on I-75/85 b/c some genius decided to jump off a bridge over the Downtown Connector right before rush hour. Thankfully, check-in went quick and I thought we were homefree, but we waited for 45 mins in the TSA security line, which wound from the metal-detectors through the Atrium and back out to the South Terminal baggage claim. For those of you not familiar with ATL, that's pretty far--probably close to 3 city blocks. It was crappy, but it was a Monday morning in Atlanta after a holiday weekend, so I wasn't surprised. By the time we got to A25, they were boarding our "Zone" (what's with DL's new "Zone" boarding policy?).

I'm not really sure why we left Atlanta so late, probably b/c of the high volume of today's outgoing traffic. We were 5th in line for TO for a little while, until ATC finally got the ball rolling and we departed out of 8R, climbing immediately into low cloud cover. In flight service, for the 3rd time, was the Fast Break service. I munched on those really tasty Biscoff cookies they always give you on morning flights, and chugged some coffee. We cruised at 29,000, heading northeast over Knoxville, TX and just west of Charleston, WV, before turning back northwest and coming in to the west of Columbus, heading east, over the Ohio State University campus for another bumpy wheels down on 10R.

Well, I hope you all enjoyed this report from this veteran ATL and Delta flyer (over 20 years from that airport, and over 5 from CMH). Any questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

Oops...I said that on DL 2142 we were "heading northeast over Knoxville, TX" which is a typo...I meant, Knoxville, TN...Tennessee, not Texas...sorry!

I found pics of a B757 and B767 similar to the ones I was on to CVG and ATL respectively:

You answered your own question!

I've flown the CMH-CVG/ATL segment quite a few times and it is usually always full, whether it be an MD-80, 737-800, or a 757-200. A lot of DL passenger traffic at CMH. I was impressed.

Yea, that's kinda what I was getting at to begin with...thats why I said it didn't really matter...

Its still very interesting how they gave the newest gates to DL after the last CMH renovation...after we deplaned I saw flights leaving out of CMH's DL wing on Concourse C for LGA, BOS, ATL and LAX...the way I see it is, the more DL here at CMH, the better!

I enjoyed reading your post. I must admit, I'm not a fan of the "fast break" service although I think it's certainly appropriate on flights like CMH-CVG. The CVG-ATL (usually 1hr) should be enough time for the F/A's to offer a proper drink service. After all, COMAIR does it on the same flight segment. Anyway, the "fast break" service is correctly named IMO as it allows the F/A's to get to break fast. Did you happen to notice at DL's CVG Concourse A that NW and CO have taken up residence there. That is starting to happen more frequently all around America. By the way, the "Zone Boarding" system is DL's new way to board. Most airlines have gone to this method or are about to. DL was one of the latter airlines to adopt this method.

I did notice Northworst's presence in CVG's A, but it was still outnumbered by good ol' DL.

I agree about the fast break service, it kinda sucks. An hour is certainly enough time to give the normal drink service, in my opinion.

I know AA has a "Group" boarding policy, not unlike Delta's Zone's. They still should offer those passengers with small children and babies (or the elderly) the opportunity to board the aircraft first...I don't know if that policy has changed, or if my flight was just out of the ordinary, but I know that would have been helpful to us (we were traveling with my 8 month-old baby girl).

Anyway, overall, good DL service as always.

I think that the "FastBreak" service is pretty lame. CO manages to do full beverage and peanut/pretzel service on even the shortest of flights, such as IAH-MSY (which can even be on 752s).

It's funny how in recent years the service of airlines (collectively) has declined...used to be that you could get a hot meal on a 2 hour flight, even in coach. Now you're lucky if they throw you a bottle of water and a bag of peanuts or trail mix.

I think that one can get special or early boarding if they ask the agent. They got away from the general announcement "if those traveling with small children or may require extra time..." type announcement as invariably, the gate is rushed by those who really don't fit the criteria. By the way, regarding DL's "Fast Break" service, that term has taken on some negative connotations. So, the company has decided to rename it as a "Limited Beverage" service. Certainly a more appropriate name but this service is provided on way too many flights IMO.

See, for some reason (and this is just my opinion), I think that "Fast Break" sounds better than "Limited Beverage"..."Fast Break" has more of a marketing, business feel to it, whereas "Limited Beverage" sounds somewhat sterile...I highly doubt that name will improve the negative connotation.

Maybe, to make the whole issue better, they could offer a small hot snack instead of tossing you a bag of nuts or pretzels? Limiting drinks is ok to a certain respect, but you still have to offer the customer something worth their while.

Like I said, the whole attitude toward service amenities has changed.

Does CO fly 757s or 767s/777s into CLE? Seems that its mainly CO CRJs/ERJs and 737s.
