Montego Bay-Kingston, A320-200 series.
Date : June 1st,2004
After receiving a 5:00am wake-up call I decided to do some last minute packing and caught up on some last minute sleep as I was really exhausted from working 5 long days. Went to the bank and then headed for the airport. Check-in was excellent as agent was articulate and I was assigned seat 25F as requested on this A320-200 series aircraft. Cleared customs and purchased 6 bottles of Jamaican overproof rum, had some Blue Mountain Coffee and then headed for the gate. The gate assigned was gate 1A which uses stairs as gate 2-7 has previously installed loading bridges. At 10:45 boarding was called for Air Jmaiaca 069 nonstop service to Kingston with continuing service to Grand Cayman. This A320 aircraft has reg # 6y-JAJ boarding was done from the front door and was warmly greeted by the purser who "seems pleasant" I was directed to my window seat where I could see Miami Air B737-800, Cayman Airways B737-200 and Air Jamaica A321 and A320s. Door was closed and pushback was at 11:11am our flight would take us to 11,000 ft with a 17 mins flight to Kingston. Safety demos were done and cabin secured for take-off taxied to runway 7 where we had a short roll climbed to 1000 ft turned left then a right turn to the Manley VOR. Flight was smooth in the beginning until 30 miles from Kingston it became turbulent. Touchdown was smooth at 11:38 and uneventful on runway 11 and we taxied to our assigned gate #5.Deplaned then went to the intransit lounge to await the boarding of my next flight JM 037 nonstop service to Ft Lauderdale.

Once in the intransit lounge I treated myself to some Blue Mountain coffee mocha which is the best I have tasted so far. boarding was called at 11:50am but I decided to do some spotting as BWIA 737-800 to POS was boarding and I saw quite a few Air Jamaica A320/A321. There was a long line as everyone was being checked and based on the current temperature of 100 plus I decided to wait in the cool area as Kingston has no airbridge (yet) so stairs are used. I was checked by a very friendly security personnel who engaged me in a conversation about travelling with camcorders as they are not allowed in the terminal, while boarding I saw 4 flight attendants boarding the flight, I was wondering maybe they are deadheading to do another flight, it turned out they were the crew on duty as they had missed their connecting flight from Montego Bay. The first impression I recieved was "I am tired so dont even start with me" as the captain was in the number four capacity as he said "in order not to loose their slot they had to commence boarding without the crew". One thing that amazes me is the fact you are working for a company yet still you ignore the principle of the name tag. The girls were very young but menopausal and you could stay in a dark room and see the tension between them. Doors were closed and pushback began at 12:40pm safety demo done and we had a 21 knot taxi speed to runway 11. Todays flight would take us to 37,000 ft. Take was powerful except there was a variation in the SID as normally after take-off there is a bank to the right over the sea to avoid the residential area of New Kingston but on this flight we banked left over the residential area of New Kingston where I could view the "Hollywood" mansions. Meal service began shortly and the announcement was made that on todays flight there is a chicken and cheese sandwich with complimentary wine, beer and champagne. The Flight Attendants threw the meals at the passengers as they seem rushed and there was hardly any smiles and the "bitchiness" amongst them was apparent. The sandwich was good and I was offered a fruit punch by a crew member not on duty but who decided to help with the service. The non-smiling female stopped by and I took two "cups" of California wine which was excellent. Duty free was offered and I passed, when the trays were being cleared there was a heated argument between two crew members as one was not working as fast as the other and I must admit I enjoyed the drama. Descent began at 2:00pm and we overflew quite a few small islands we then started our short approach to runway 27R at FLL. Touchdown was at 2:12pm with some strong crosswind. taxied and parked at gate H2. I must say Air Jamaica never fails to surprise me with their service inconsistencies but due to thei special fares and convenient connections I will however continue to fly with them none the less. I plan to submit my next report next Tuesday with my return flight hopefully with pictures.
