The Shortest Scheduled RJ Flight

Because many people here have enquired about the shortest scheduled RJ flight, I’ve decided to give a trip report of it because I fly it every week as a part of my commute to work in South Texas. Here is the photo Trip Report for IAH (George Bush Intercontinental Houston) to EFD (Houston Ellington Field).

Flight No: CO Express 2189
Equipment: Embraer ERJ-145 XR
Scheduled Departure Time: 5:15p
Actual Departure Time: 5:32p
Scheduled Arrival Time: 5:42p
Actual Arrival Time: 5:40p
Flight Time: 8 minutes!
Class: All Coach
Gate: B74
Seat: 18C

I connect from MFE weekly and my first leg always parks at the new Terminal E, so my walk is quite long to get to Terminal B where the RJ's are located. Luckily, they are busing people now from the two terminals until the train is finished that will connect the two terminals (well, sort of!!!). I arrived at Terminal B at about 4:45p, and they called for boarding at about 5:00. This flight was about half full, and considering that the ERJ only holds 50, boarding was completed quite quickly.

The door was closed and we pushed back at approximately 5:16p. We headed West past the south side of Terminal B and A to taxi way WW.

We didn’t have to wait for too many other aircraft in front of us to taxi into position, so at 5:32p, we were cleared for take-off from runway 15L.

The take-off roll lasted all of about 25 seconds, and then we were airborne. We continued on a heading of 150 deg. for about 3 minutes, then the power was pulled back to maintain about 250 knots and an altitude of about 3000 feet.

We then turned right to a heading of about 180 at the Houston Ship Channel.

At this point, the flight attendant reminds everyone that this flight is so short that, not only will we not have any beverage service, but that electronic devises including cell phones are not permitted at all during this flight. We are however, invited to adjust our seat backs to our liking! Meanwhile the pilots have already adjusted the flaps to 9 deg., and begun to slow for landing. Downtown Houston is directly east of us.

As we fly over the South East part of the Sam Houston Toll Way, the pilots drop the flaps to the maximum and make final corrections for RW 17R.


We are told to get the tray tables and seats in their up and locked position, and the next thing you know, we are about to land.

If you look closely you will notice the Texas Air National Guard's F-16's at the ready.

We taxi quickly to the small Continental terminal adjacent to the control tower and wait for the gate checked bags to be brought out.

We are let out and in 8 minutes we are across Houston Texas, the fourth largest city in the US!!

I take this flight alot myself-in fact I'll probably be taking it for the last time in July when I go to Vegas (since they are discountinuing it in September). The EFD-IAH flights are usually slightly longer due to the landing patterns at IAH; and if you take off from 15L you are already heading in the direction of EFD. I will miss the free parking and extra miles when this flight is discontinued.

Nice report.

One question, Why does a short flight like this exist? Isnt this a waste of resources. I see in other replies that it will be discontinued.

How long would it take you to drive this distance?

I know some of the other carriers do a small hop from their hubs. Never did ask anyone why they do this.

The flight exist because there is a large population base that Ellington Field serves; the airport is a few more miles south on I45 than Hobby airport. If you stay in Clear Lake or anywhere on the southside (southeast side) of Houston your drive to IAH is easily 25-30mins without traffic/with traffic it could be as much as 1 1/2 hours. Parking is free at Ellington Field and you still get those 500 min. OnePass Miles. I believe in September Continental Express will begin ERJ flights to CLE and EWR, thus negating the need to serve the southside from EFD. The flights are almost all OnePass Elite members.

To give you an idea of the distances from Ellington Field to Bush, here is what happened on this past Sunday evening (6-15-2004): the 6:07 EFD to IAH flight was cancelled due to weather at Bush. In fact, several flights that were to arrive at IAH were diverted to EFD, including a 757, and 2 737NG's. We saw this while in the cab that was supplied to us. This cab ride took 1 hour and 15 minutes on Sunday with no traffic. I would estimate that it can take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in rush hour traffic, even while taking the Sam Houston Toll Way.

I have been told that CO is discontinuing this service because, among other reasons, the make-shift terminal is dilapidated, and neither CO nor the City of Houston wants to build another one. Due to EFD's proximity to NASA, I wouldn't be surprised if a large contract that CO has with some aerospace company is ending, as most of the flights are nearly empty now instead of full like they were several months earlier. As someone wrote earlier, CO is starting service from HOU to EWR and CLE. Of course this will not help because I always fly within Texas  Sad.

Hah! I learned first hand about the weather problems on Sunday! I got stuck in Houston on Sunday night (incoming on CO622- 6 hours late) and missed school on Monday!

They use all of their RJ equipment on the IAH-EFD route. This includes the 135's, 145's and 145-XR. They currently have no service to HOU Houston Hobby from Bush. Extended Range on this short of a flight is odd, but it must have been an equipment change the day of departure. This is the only time I flew on an XR so far this year on this route.

Sorry EFD, Ellington that's what i meant. But still what's with the XR on a 25 mile flight lol.
