Yet another DC-9-30 instead of an A319 stood at the jetbridge, ready to operate NW401 to Dallas/Fort Worth on this chilly morning in Minneapolis. We checked our bags through and made our way down the seemingly never-ending G Concourse to gate G20 and boarded our aged aircraft. My mom and I had seats 2C and D (I took the window, of course) and we pushed back from the gate on time at 7:20am. The main advantage of gate G20 is that it's one of the closest to runway 30L, translating to a quick departure from frigid Minnesota. Flying time to Dallas-Fort Worth was 2 hours 8 minutes, which was made all the more enjoyable by the pretty brunette flight attendant working First Class. Breakfast was a hot ham and egg plate, a selection of fruits, and hot coffee cake, which was almost as good as the cinnamon rolls that NW so rudely took off the breakfast menu some six months ago. I began nodding off after looking at the SkyMall catalog (you know, it's a new catalog but the stuff's all the same) and reading an interesting WorldTraveler article on the construction of the new Detroit Midfield Terminal. In the article, it highlighted opinions of NW frequent fliers on the new terminal, quoting one Jeff DeWoskin who is one of NW's "top ten frequent flyers", logging about 200,000 miles per year, as he flies DTW-PEK every 10 days! Anyways, I was jolted awake by the DC-9's wheels hitting runway 17L 30 minutes early, after which we pulled into gate 5. We retrieved our luggage and went off with family for a quick weekend visit, consisting mostly of Scrabble, political debate, and barbecue (I'm only good at the latter two). We set off from the house on Monday morning.

My mom called into town on Monday morning, just checking in on the weather, and found that a messy ice storm (changing over to snow) was moving in on the Minneapolis area. Of course, my mom predicted impending doom, worrying that we would be stuck in Dallas for the next two days. We still made it out to DFW Airport, checking in for our flight and getting our boarding passes (1A and B). We boarded the aircraft, greeted by an attractive blond stewardess named Heidi and a Mexican flight attendant "se llama" Alejandro, who broke the mold for most male F/As by flirting with Heidi the entire flight, her laughter audible throughout the cabin for the duration of the trip. We left the gate on time at 1:00pm , taxied over International Drive, and joined the departure wait for runway 18L in our 33-year-old DC-9-40, taking off at about 1:15 pm. The lunch served by Alejandro y amigos was a turkey plate over pineapple dressing, which was pretty good. I passed most of the flight listening to DMX and laughing at the hype of the DTW Midfield article (You'll feel like you're at Disneyland ). We descended through some clouds and touched down about 20 minutes ahead of schedule, parking at gate F15. I noticed after we had arrived that few flights were boarding, and saw that most flights for later that night were cancelled. We had just beaten the icestorm into town. I laughed again as I saw the curiously long line for the 4:50pm flight to Boston, thinking of many movies with the line "Just get me somewhere!". It was the only flight still on time. We claimed our luggage again and left the airport, satisfied with another good performance from Northwest.

Hehe...that might have something to do with it... . Also, though, the on-time records, great service by F/As, and pretty decent food choices carry a lot of weight.
We might have been one of the last flights in that day... I saw in Dallas that the next few Northwest flights to Minny were cancelled. You might say I was lucky... keep in mind that I did have to go to school the next day, versus being in sunny Dallas and avoiding school for at least one more day (if not more). I guess it's all relative...

I'm sorry to be the only negative one about NW so far, but I have to say. I fly to Detroit a lot..I live there for a lot of my summer. I have a lot of family in the East Coast, generally Detroit area, and Chicago area. But anyways, I fly United a lot, I am a premier member with them, but a few times, I have flown NW to detroit because of the convenience of non-stop to detroit from SNA. This particular time, about two years ago, I left SNA before sunset on an NW A320. It was during Thanksgiving actually. We took off, for our Three and a half hour flight to DTW. I was pretty comfortable, looking out the window. Then read some magazine, and listened to my all-time favorite music (U2). Then it became dark, and comfortable. I tried to sleep. But before I slept, they served something. Before it got completely dark. It was, what looked like, a sorry excuse for a meal. For almost 4 hours, I ate this: It was really stale pita bread, with some weird, crushed, apple tasting bread, not good tasting, and some really cold cucumbers or something. It was terrible. Absolutely nuts. I was starving. I fly coach on domestic flights, and this was the worst meal I have ever gotten. The only real bad thing I'd have to say was the meal. Really bad. Service was alright though, nothing special. It was a great flight though, other than the meal. It was a beautiful, absolutely gorgeous descent into the night-lit detroit. We landed nicely, I got out, and right when I got to the house, I ate and ate.
On the way back from DTW to SNA, I was seated waaaaaay in the back, with this really obnoxious little kid. He was spillin all his stuff on me, throwing his salt at me, spilling water, it was really bad. I couldn't sleep at all, they kept the lights on all throughout the flight, when usually they would dim them. It was the worst flight I have ever taken. The FAs couldnt do anything cuz the flight was packed. And the worst part is, our flight was four and a half hours, because of some storms, we had to sneak down in Mexico and come back up. This wasn't completely the airlines fault I guess, but I thought I would talk about it so you would have something to read! But, this is MY experience with NW. Yours may be better I hope.

Your experience is a common one for those of us flew NW back a couple of years ago. Let's call it 1998 and the first couple of months of 1999.
However, if you look at the DOT figures NW has significantly improved operationally while most other airlines have declined. NW is now the #2 airline in the country.
Become an elite member on NW (as opposed to premier on UA) and you will fly first class domestically everytime you fly with autoupgrades and they call you to tell you about them!!!
Also, the food is much better now. NW being one of the only airlines to invest some extra money on food. It's great in First Class, to the point I look forward to the food. Coach is better than most, they serve it more than the others do, and while it isn't as good as a homecooked meal...it is pretty good for airline food.
My advice to you and others is to try NW again if you haven't since the headaches of 98.
