This is a trip report so Im gonna share the whole trip not just the flying. You can skip through if you like, I just feel like if its called a trip report, you should get your money's worth and get a whole trip. Don't you agree?

This trip was a pretty random one. I am home in JAX for the summer before I move permanently to my fraternity house (phi kappa psi for any brothers out there) in early august. Now, I hadn't been in Athens (UGA) since I finished exams in early May so it had been awhile since I had experienced the debauchery of college life. Pair that with the fact that our house was a total dump, Decided to spend my july fourth weekend up in Athens fixing my future home up and hanging out for Americas Birthday. By the way, how come everyone has hambrugers and hot dogs on Americas bday but no cake or ice cream? Just a thought?...

I did a flat horrible job booking this flight. I recently decided to switch from Delta to Airtran because of the frequent flier program. I fly 4-10 times a year, mostly between JAX-ATL so I dont get many miles but since Airtran does it based on flights, it was benficial. As I checked out the fares, I noticed I would get an extra credit with my Amex if I booked a normal fare coach seat. So basically I paid almost $100 more to get an assigned window seat and an extra credit. Just dumb. I chose seat 25A on both flights figuring it would give me good views of the wing of the 717. I just love those flaps and spoliers.

Departure time: 7:05 p.m.
Arrival time: 8:15 p.m.
Aircraft: 717

I left on July 2, which was a rainy friday through much of the southeast, except for J'ville. I had been at the airport all day (interning for the airport authority) and the weather there had been great all day. I parked my car in the employee lot for free, which just makes me happy as a little kid. The word free to a college kid is the most important word in his vocabulary. I checked in quickly in the airtran kiosk. Seemed just like the Delta ones so it was pretty darn easy. I wondered through our new renovated terminal which I was instrumental in bringing to J'ville (hey someone has to file those papers). I did the customary strip show at security. I wasn't carrying any guns or bombs which made security easy and quick.

Once I got into concourse B I noticed a lot of aircraft. There were 2 US 737's and a US 757 that were diverted to JAX from MCO along with a surprise vistor, a 737-800 from Alaska and then an Airtran 717 also going to Orlando. That last one really confused the people on my plane, as it left the only airtran gate just as our plan was supposed to depart causing everyone to worry that they had left them behind. Our plane was really late, it landed around 10 min before it was supposed to depart but was turned quite quickly by the friendly airtran ground crew including a pilot who was flying to ATL with us. We finnaly boarded around, I dont know, 7:25 or so and made a quick taxi to runway 7. Here I saw my first missed approach as a comair aircraft was too close to a plane landing before it. We took off to a cloudy east and Immediatly I felt some chop.

The routing was very strange. The pilot was trying to avoid the heavy weather. Usually we fly west and then north towards Valdosta and Macon then line up for 27L in ATL. On Friday we flew east over the Atlantic, north to SAV then back west to ATL. This improvised Flight plan added some considerable time but I didnt care seeing how I was in no hurry at all. The FA passed out drinks and pretzels, of which I had diet coke and red my seinfeld book. The pilot was extreme friendly, especially compared to the dull Delta flight crews. The FL crew just seemed more upbeat and friendlier. I enjoyed the older 717 and the different seats which are kinda contoured to your back.

We made a nice fast approach into a real grey ATL. I recgnized nothing as we came in, mostly because I rarely drive around ATL. When Im there, Im in and out. You get caught in the ATL traffic and next thing you know you are going 90 mph and in spartanburg, SC. As we came into ATL we through the engines into reverse, which I wish my car could do. We exited runway 27L pretty far down, near Concourse A and taxid quickly aacross 27R under a departing Delta md-80. I noticed they were redoing a taxiway around B. We taxied to C 12 or something and I disembarked. I noticed the concourse was little bit darker and gloomier than the Delta ones but it may have been a burnt out light bulb that runs the whole concourse or something. Rode the nice train to the baggage claim where some brothers were waiting for me.

That about does it for the flight up, turned out kinda long, so Ill post the actualy trip in a reply and then the return flight in another reply. Any comments are welcome.

Well the actual trip part is gonna be short like a sportcenter highlite of what happened in Athens.

Leaving the airport we went a great restaraunt called Houstons which was fantastic and really expensive. But for any couples out there, I recomend it if you are in buckhead. We made the trip to athens in the usual hour and hit the hay early as we were all exhausted.

The next morning, I was working on the house all day. The house in a typical big white Geogia house, and its old. We are talking century old. Which makes upkeep a pain. Before I got there, a contractor had fixed all the big problems since I had been there, so all the house needed was a facelift. The heart bypass had already been done. The morning I took care of the lawn and landscaping which was in dispare. After it was done, you could eat off it, but I wouldnt recomend it because I put fertilizer down. We painted the inside of most of the house which takes quite a while. The highlight of the night was a huge poker game which lasted till 4 Am and resulted in me winning the whole thing. I like poker, its fun...

For the fourth, we had a huge barbeque, thus undoing all the cleaning we had done the day before. Everyone was drunk, which is typical at school. Apparently any fireworks are illegal in GA and shooting one off around cops is bad. Lucky for us he was focused on the road! Drunk people do stupid stuff, ill just leave that night to your imagination.

In preparation for leaving on Monday we went to some gigantic and really expensive mall called Lenox in ATL. Definently too expensive to buy anything.

Well goodness, I think this report is longer than the physical trip. I got to the bustling airport that is ATL around 7. The whole kiosk thing really speeds up check in and we wondered around the pre-security area for about 15 min. People bash ATL on this site, but I love it. Maybe because I fly through it so often. I cleared security quickly, maybe 10 min, and got on the train. I love the train because of people on the train. Everyone wants to act cool and not hold on, but the sheer jerkyness of it requires at least some holding on. But there is always that oen tough business man who refuses and then plays off his fall and subsequent smashing of a little kid. Rode the train to concourse D and rode the escalator up.

Flight: 1737
Departure time: 9:05 p.m.
Arrival time:10:15 p.m.
Aircraft: 717

I was exhausted at this point, so i dragged myself to the end and gate D 4 occasionally stopping to admire the planes. I was unaware continental had so many gates in ATL, like 6 i think and nothwest another 4. I guess do to their codeshare thingy. Also, I didnt know that the end of D can be used by any airline as there is no particualr airline signage. Our flight was coming from JAX where it was already delayed thus delaying us to board until 9:30. I sat at D-1 (where our flight was eventually moved anyway) and watched all the planes take off from 27R. Saw a lot of cool planes, including an ATA L-1011, DAL 777, Air France 777, Aeromexico 737-700 with winglets, Airtran A320 and eventualy the new 737. Once again the airtran people were real friendly. I also noticed that alot more hot young (20 +/-) girls fly airtran. Just a side note their for future flights.

The flight from JAX was pretty full but ours was probably 80%. The seat next to me was empty and I had a great view of the lights on the wing, the flaps and spoilers as well as the gate area. we departed quickly from 27R with a cool sound from the engines. From my seat, the engines were in site and thus I could hear the purr of the engines on takeoff. Departue was cloudy but no rain and we went out pretty far maybe 15 miles, before turning around to the east. This time we headed towards macon and south.

The in flight service was nothing special, with diet coke and pretzels and one cranky FA, but I am cranky too after working all day. This 717 was newer as it didnt have the windows (kinda like eyebrows) that were on earlier 717's. It was a short 40 min flight down to JAX compared to the 1 hour and 10 min flight up to ATL. We descended into JAX and I could clearly see the runway as we turned which was real cool, as im no real pilot. I bet it would be fun. We turned onto final maybe 5 miles out. The landing was pretty good but again we used up almost all the runway. We turned off on the base of the landing zone of 25 (we landed on 7) and turned towards gate B3. If you ever go to JAX, go around 11 and you will see quite sight. There are a lot of planes that overnight there. I was there early, maybe 10:30 and there were already 3 767's from Delta that leave at 7, 8 and 9 in the morning. There was also a us erj, 737, a ACA crj at the end of B, a northwest dc-9 at A, A WN 737 and CO 737 and 2 erjs at C along with an eagle ATR from MIA and a MD-80 of AA from DFW. I know from experience that there will end up being a md-80 and comair crj spending the night there as well.

Everyone rushed off tha plane as if they had somewhere urgent to go at 10:30 at night, knocking old people out fo the way and stepping on those who were too slow.

Overall it was a great and very productive trip. Im looking forward to moving full time up to Athens and the upcoming football season is gonna be fantastic. I really enojyed my first flights ever on Airtran and I think I am an airtran person for awhile. I enjoy the frequent flier program and the configuration of the planes. The only bad thing is they fly out of JAX maybe 4 times daily compared to 8+ on Delta. Either way, I love to fly and hopefully Ill get ot fly soon. Right now im hoping on a trip to Vegas but who knows. Thanks for reading, any comments, positive or negative are welcome.

Good report. Airtran's pretty good for hopping around on a whim, IMO. You're right about Lenox/Phipps Plaza in Buckhead being expensive. It's pretty much the "Beverly Hills" of Atlanta. I had to go down there a couple months ago to pick up two Apple iPod minis for friends in Germany to the tune of about $600 (paid back of course).

GO DAWGS! Back-to-back Tennessee & LSU games this year....whoa.
