Who would think a stopover to PDX would be in OGG? Only on Hawaiian Airlines.
The one good thing of checking in early because of TSA regs, is that I got more spotting time, and exercise walikng to and fro taking photos of a n/c NW 744, the FJ 738, AQ 73G among others. I have them posted on myaviation.net
At first, when I booked the flight, I was under the impression that the HNL-OGG segment was going to be a 717-200, but after checking in, they told me it was a 763 all the way. Bittersweet news...on one hand I thought I had my chance to get on a 712, but on the other hand I found it humourous to ride a 763 inter-island. The flight pushed back on-time at 1020 from Gate 34. We taxied to Rwy 8R, and our rotation was quite early since we were not fully loaded. We had good altitude by the time we passed the GenAv parking lot. The flight took 20 minutes to OGG, landed on Rwy 2, and parked at Gate 1. This leg was open seating, but from OGG to PDX, we had to take our assigned seats. We got off, and gave me a chance to find photo ops, only AQ 73Gs.
We left at 1230, with a full load. After holding short for some arriving mainland flights, we were cleared for take-off. OGG's Rwy 2 is a hair short of 7000 ft., needless to say, that does not leave a big margin for error. A few hundred yards away is the Pacific Ocean. You get the picture. We got a rolling start while on Taxiway A, with the pilot gunning the engines in the turn onto Rwy 2. We rotated with about 1000 ft (maybe less) of real estate remaining. The flight was rather smooth all the way. The meal was actually quite delicious, which consisted of grilled chicken on rice shaped pasta (sorry don't know the name), and a salad with salsa/ranch dressing. I supplied my own drinks, XS Energy Drinks that is. We got to the Pacific Coast on time, and landed @ PDX on Rwy 28L. We taxied to Gate D10 while the sun was sinking below the horizon.
Got to PDX early 1) to avoid the long lines at the TSA checkpoint, and 2) to do some shopping (since PDX shops charge the same prices as anywhere in Portland, and no sales tax). Took the MAX from downtown to PDX which costs a whopping $1.60! HA's check-in counter is at the other end opposite the MAX stop. Good chance for exercise. After getting my shopping done, and stuffing my garment bag, I checked in, then went through security. No lines, empty=more photo ops! Again check MA.net for stuff I put up right away.
The flight going to OGG was full. We pushed back from Gate D13 on-time. I thought we were going to depart from Rwy 28R, but we took off from Rwy 28L. I think we were too heavy for 28R. Anyway, got some shots of arrivals while holding short with Mount Hood in the background. Take-off was smooth, as was the flight. Slept for the 1st half of the flight, until the meal was served. This one was okay...pot roast and mashed potatoes. Flying into OGG was smooth, and landed 30+ minutes ahead of schedule on Rwy 2, and pulled into Gate 21. The flight crew was nice enough to keep us inside with the air running. We even cut our stopover short since only a few people got on to go to HNL.
At least this time we did not need the rolling start, but the rotation length was about the same. The flight to HNL was quick and smooth. I was hoping for a landing on 4R, but we were given 8L (the norm) We ended up being 45 minutes early! Gate 28 was the end of my journey.
This 763's row 16 had no window, so technically I guess it's a window seat, but without a view. You know, the window shade permanently down.
The two 763s I rode were not the newest ones. They did not have the 777-style interior as do some of the later 763s in HA's fleet. All in all, HA's flight and cabin crews demonstrate Hawaii's Aloha Spirit. Their attitude and service was very commendable. Some of the US majors need to take lessons from both the HA and AQ F/A's, who in my opinion are the best in the US. The only other F/A's that come close on the airlines that I have flown on are the AS and QX ones.

During my spotting/photo spree at PDX, I was stopped by a PDX Police officer, asking me why I was writing down info on my notepad after taking pictures. Apparently, someone thought it was suspicious of someone taking a photo of an aircraft, then jotting down the reg#, flight# and gate#. I agreed with the officer that he had his duty to do, and co-operated with him. He said he's seen people taking a couple of photos, but not on the scale that I was walking up and down both Concourse D and E taking photos of any aircraft I could see. We had a good laugh after all was said and done. They ran my ID through over the radio too.

One aircraft I REALLY wanted to get a photo of was a DL MD-90. The livery didn't matter, but I would have preferred the "widget" or "interim". I missed an opportunity last year while in SEA, when my camera died.

Come to think of it ... AA used to have a flight from either DFW or LAX, a DC-10-30, that would continue to OGG. An ex-girlfriend used to work for AMR @ HNL, and would take that flight to go & visit her folks on Maui.
