Me and Chris Sharps (Chris78cpr) decided to go to New York this past weekend for one night...

What a city, I had visited NYC just over a year ago (according to my passport stamps, a year and 6 days hehe).

We flew standby on the VS045 out to JFK, the flight was fully booked and we were lucky to get onto the flight...

In the morning waiting for the flight to close, we watched the sun rise...

However, by a stroke of luck, we managed to get an economy class seat. We ran from check in to the gate, and there stood G-VAST...

We boarded, we were in seats 32 B and C. Myself in the middle... Im not used to flying in Y but i suppose it wasnt too bad. I would have been okay had it had V:Port

installed but I guess i couldnt really argue. After all we had cheated the odds by getting onto this flight...

We taxiied out to runway 27L and powered up the engines,

V1, Rotate... V2, Positive Rate Of Climb... Gear Up!

So, i sat there and dozed in and out of conscienceness for an hour... Awoken by the delivery of breakfast of Sausage, bacon, mushrooms, beans and potatoes... Crap food..

REALLY crap food. But I normally have good meals on VS...

I decided to take some photos around the cabin...

And noticed a DC-10 trailing off our Port, so I quickly changed lenses for my 70-200f/4L

Was a difficult picture, unusually our contrails had started to form by door 5 so It was like shooting through light fog. It was back light, I forgot to switch my camera back to

Large Fine and 200mm wasnt enough zoom really...

We landed in JFK, over Howard Beach onto runway 31R, crossed 08R and taxiied to the term where we saw the Biman on stand next door but one to ours...

Went through the more difficult interviews i'd had at security this year. Really drummed about what I did and why I was only in JFK for one day. The woman seemed to have

a problem with understanding the basics of Staff Travel...

Found a hotel through a random kiosk, in the most ghetto neighbourhood I have ever seen... the Crown Plaza in "Jamaica". And it wasnt called that for the weather, sandy

beaches or clear light blue sea.

We dumped our bags, current time awake was 11hrs...

Caught the AirTrain to Howard Beach then the A-Train to 42nd Street and walked over to Times square... Met some random guy selling DVD's haha, "We Got Tha' Goodz Fo'

Ya' Hood" was his motto... He said, name it they got it. I asked for the terminal and he didnt have it. Anyone know the number for trading standards in NYC? Was False

Advertising :P

Went to Sbarro's for pizza and cheese cake, then into the Virgin Megastore to check out the hotties inside and look at some music. Nothing really took my fancy.

It started going dark at 5pm, so we set up cameras and started taking pictures in the square... I offered to take a picture for some guys on a short trip like us to NYC.

Some were from Canada... Some from Amsterdam. Very funny to talk to and drunk as farts! I let one of them take a pic of me and chris, but i havnt edited that one yet.

About an hour later we were stopped by a nice lady who sold us 2 tickets to a comedy club, called Improv on 53rd street between 7th and 8th ave if anyone wants a good

show to watch. We went beacuse she said they almost never ID. So we bought the tickets, a bargin at just $5 each. Headed towards hersheys, Climbed to the top of a hotel

and took pictures there

Hersheys

Unkown Building

Times Square

Say Hello Chris

We went for dinner at the ESPNZone, but i wasnt all that hungry. I ordered a starter of chicken pieces but had about 3 and was full up again. Chris had the ESPN Burger...

Seemed like he enjoyed it Big grin

We went to find a Starbucks for coffee to wake us up... We had just passed 24hrs awake with no sleep...

A Grande Vanilla Coffee later and I felt Perkier...

Headed over to the Rockerfella Center and went iceskating... Quite pricey but worth every cent... Met a girl called "ginger" was nice to talk to... Church school girl though,

too innocent for my likings... haha

Went to queue for the comedy show as it was fast approaching 11pm. It was pissing down with rain but oh well... Inside we started to talk to 2 girls...

HOLLA OUT TO STEPH AND BLAIR!!! Big grin

We bought them some drinks, really interesting and nice people. The show was hillarious, being english we were picked on and I think I offended almost everyone when I

said "Manchester kicks New Yorks ass". I lied haha, new york kicks any city in the UK's arse, apart from maybe Dudley... LoL

N E Ways, afterwards we made a move onto SoHo and into a rand0m bar. Got the bartender to take a pic of us all...

Chris and Stephanie

We left at 3am, walked them back to apartment, got a few pics for their cameras and got their numbers & emails. Hugged goodnight and arranged to meet the next day. (No

kiss, but hell, I wasnt really on the pull im just glad they even talked to us haha)

After getting the A-Train back to Howard Beach, I would reccomend NEVER EVER getting the metro that late at night, some guy was sniffing PCP or some shite, there was

a guy staring at me with a nervous twitch and a guy asking for money bitching because he only had $12... LoL

With £2000 of uninsured camera gear on your back... I kinda grabbed my tripod securly and put my bag on my back hahaha... I never bin more scared for my life... Chris

was no help, falling asleep on the train practically leaving me on my own... I hoped if anything happened they would attack chris, giving me time to hit them with my tripod

and escape... Haha sorry chris, but its true LoL

We finally got to sleep at 6am, after a total of 30hrs awake with NO SLEEP...

Awoken at 0930, we got ready and left for another whole day in the city. Visited B&H, I got a 1GB Lexar 80x write speed. Fricking Rapid.... plus two UV Filters...

Chris got the 100mm f/2.8 Macro lense...

We tried on various lenses, myself trying the 170-500 bigma, 300mm f/4 LIS and the 100-300 sigma.

Chris tried out the 135mm f/2, the 400mm f/4 DO and the lenses I tried...

Onwards to 53rd and broadway to the Art Café for lunch... Chris's choice... after leaving there, we managed to contact Blair and Steph, we agreed to meet an hour later

outside their aparment. So off the 5th ave to the disney store, again chris's choice. Then into a ghetto cab, got us there quite fast...

We met the girls and went to a diner...

Blair and Steph...

We left them about an hour later after teaching them some "english" hahaha...

Got a cab back to the airport, couldnt be arsed to get the metro as I was so tired...

Went to JFK for the flight, turned up back at check in too late thanks to some evil check in agent...

However we were given tickets straight onto the VS010 wich is a -600 so not too much of a disaster.

Gave me chance to take pics of this Jewish Jet 747

also this VARIG MD-11

Then at the gate, we were called to the desk about 20 mins before departure and given purple UCS tickets Big grin

Wicked...

Upper class would be ours...

G-VGOA arrived on stand as planned,

I got onboard and sat down when we were asked to move from 5C and D to 14 and 15 K..

the view from my final resting place...

The Bar...

My seat is the one with no duvet...

As we passed dublin we had a call for people with advanced medical training on board to contact a member of staff... Luckily a doctor was onboard in UCS and went to

help...

A lady had an epileptic fit on the flight, we were cleared for an emergency direct approach into london heathrow... Was straight to the thames and turn right to line up for the

ILS, no STARS procedures, passed the stack over BNN

Landed and taxiied to a remote stand...

After a few minutes we were cleared to leave by the paramedics...

And finally we reach the end... What an amazing weekend, so many experiencs, so many new people we met... AWSOME!!!

I sure will be going back, please comment as it took me a long time to write this report Big grin

I live about an hour away from NYC. I hope I can do a mega weekend to London someday.
Love those DVDs from the street. They only sell the first run movies. At this time, "Terminal" is considered 2nd run or even 3rd run. Sometimes you get great quality but sometimes, nah...
NYC is pretty safe during the normal hours but I know exactly what you mean about how scary it was when riding the subway at that hour. I did it once with a friend and I wouldn't do it again.
Great job on the report and also great pictures by the way.

Hope he'd attack me first! Cheeky git!!!! Hehe! Lol, i was gradually getting more and mroe comatosed during that subway ride!

I have to say it was an awesome weekend! NYC will never be the same again! Upper class suites did rock out seriously! So plush and flipping heck was the service good! I can't wait to go back for part 2, and next time we will have to get some goods for the hood! hehe

Blair and Steph were indeed some of the nicest girls i have met, it was such a laugh talking to them and teaching them the english slang! That taxi ride was soooo funny, him blazing down park ave at 50mph while your out the window shooting pics of the metlife building! Classic! Thinking back about that subway ride makes me realize how shady it actually was, thank god we are still alive! I also agree about Jamaica, shady part of town, i felt like some drive by's were about to go down when we got there! Next time, the city hotels shall be called upon!

Anyway, i'll get of my arse soon and edit some pics.

Thanks for an awesome weekend dude!

Chris

P.S. Ginger wern't all that bad, her minder did freak me the f**k out tho! Hehe! That accent, lol, wow!

Ohh and btw what Kev forgot to say about were the 2 girls he managed to piss off on the skate rink, who then decided to join forces with their mates to try and take both me and him down! LOL Was so funny when you went thru their arms!

Monster good report. Got exhausted and exhilirated at the same time just from reading it. Sounds like you two are the ones to travel with.

Hope to visit London something like that some day... maybe too old though?

And, by the way, those were some outstanding photos, especially the pic of the DC10 in trail. Extra credit for managing that shot.

Hey whats up guys,

Great trip report. I wish I had the time and resources to take trans-atlantic januts for weekend getaways, but unfortunately college soaks up all such resources. Looks like you all had a great time in New York and met a few chicas while enjoying yourselves. Excellent. Enjoy the freedom while it lasts!

I'll be in London for the weekend for starting 3 February, so drop me a line if you want to meet for a pint or something.

Cheers,

OMG, those girls were so funny...

I'll explain the situation to people here...

Me and chris decided to go Ice Skating at the rockerfella centre.

There were these two girls who for some reason i seemed to piss off... so I decided to wind them up more, like cutting in just infront of them, spraying them with ice. Then at one point they were skating along holding hands and they split apart a little far... still holding hands but just leaving enough space to squeeze underneath their joined arms between them. So i did, at full pelt, and nearly knocked them over... Hahahahaha it was SO funny. Then they kept going Schizo whenever I came near them and at one point tried to push me and chris over...

LMAO I never laughed so hard...

Great report, and great pics.

That contrail is a DC-10 and I'm almost 100% sure it is that of Biman Banglagesh. He was coming from Brussels. Your flight and his arrive around the same time. Did you notice him on the ground at all? Just wanted to make you aware of it incase your were wondering what airline/route it was.
