It has been about a year, since the last time i posted a report, so take it easy on me ok.
This trip involved a few firsts for me:
First time south of the Ecuador, to South America, to Peru and in LAN.
LAN is an excellent airline, although I got the impression that their operations as LAN Peru, LAN Ecuador and LAN Chile are a bit confusing, since sometimes they made the distinction in all 3 carriers, but for some reason for other things they are just LAN as a whole.

This flight is the classic shuttle service between MTY-MEX run every hour or so. Peanuts and one or two drinks (alcohol included).
MTY terminal renovations are finished and it looks really really nice, unfortunately it seems that the new location of the restaurant (air side) doesn’t has windows facing the runway, as it use to have, too bad…….but the rest is Ok.
At check in, I decided not to register my bag all the way to Lima, instead I choose to collect it at MEX and then register it for the flight to LIM, since I don’t trust baggage handlers at MEX when it comes to connecting flights. Later I regretted this decision.
Boarding call came, and in front of me I had 2 businessman in their 40s with all the Chilango stereotype (people living in Mex City, the accent, the height, the black leather jacket used for casual occasions as a change from the tie and the coat, etc), I said to my self, “it is bad to judge people by their looks”, but while I was having this little chat with my self, suddenly these guys starting to jump the line, as if they were to take off first than the rest of us…….AM uses to deploy a little cart in the entrance of the aircraft, with newspapers, magazines and AM sweet&sour candies as a courtesy for you to take one or two……..well one of this guys took like a 3 hand full of candies and laughing he said they were for one of his boys having a birthday party…what a shame!....... and the last one of these two, I don’t know how, they managed to get 3 or 4 rounds of beer during a 1 hour flight…… this time I was only jealous
The flight it self was uneventful, followed by the always exciting overfly of Mexico City that keeps growing and growing. At MEX the highlight was a Cameroon Airlines parked at the MX (Mexicana) maintenance hangar, what the hell was he doing there? If you consider it was a narrow body, a 757 at the most.

UNPLANNED EXTENDED STAY AT MEX
Upon arrival, I collected my bag, went out to the main terminal and started to look for the AM counters for my registration to LIM. The actual flight is operated by LAN Peru, but my ticketed was code shared with AM. So I was not sure were to register……so I asked an AM agent in the Domestic counters, she told me to go the AM counters in the International Terminal…….so I walked there……..another AM girl told me that I must register in the LAN counters……..but were are the LAN counters? …… There are sign with LAN Chile, but not counter nor signs with LAN or LAN Peru…finally I found a bunch of people claiming to be in the line for the LAN Peru flight to Lima in a counter labeled as American West, strange, but I joined the line…..15 minutes later someone with no id visible, told us to move the line to the TACA counters, they were processing one flight to Lima via Costa Rica or somewhere around there, so that wasn’t our flight either.
Finally after almost 1 hour in line, TACA people disappear and LAN people started to occupy the counters, followed by a man who was changing physically all the TACA signs for LAN signs, not very effective in my opinion…at about 1 hour and 30 minutes in the line, without moving, the dreaded announce was made…..our 17:35 hrs flight to LIM was delayed at least 5 hours, since at that time the aircraft was still parked somewhere in LIM….our new estimated departure time was set to 22:30 hrs….after 2 hours in line I walked away with my boarding pass to LIM and a voucher for a pre-set meal in one of the restaurants, i also requested a phone card, which I didn’t get it, but got the opportunity to place the call to Lima from one LAN counters……so a free meal and lots of spare time in MEX…..what to do?
The meal was Ok, a Tortilla soup, a restaurant style burger with fries and coke……….the time past by, watching planes and people arrive and depart all afternoon……after 19hrs it is rush hour at MEX, since European flights arrive and depart…… the usual 2 LH flights to FRA (747), KL to AMS (747), AF to CDG (777), IB to MAD (A340), Varig to GRU (777), Avianca to BOG, Aero Bolivaino to La Paz, LAN Chile to Santiago and lots of UA, AA, CO and DL.
At around 22 hrs, our flight was announced in gate 23, 15 minutes later was changed to gate 15, another 15 minutes a again was changed to gate 25………but our plane didn’t depart until past 00 hrs………at around 23 hrs a great commotion happened in the waiting area, a famous singer (Christian Castro) arrived to board an AM flight to MIA, all the women, young and older were there with him waiting to get a chance to pose with him for a photo……..in the other side of the coin, his new wife is cute, much better in real life than in magazines.
Let alone the wife of this guy, LAN Peru flight attendants are among the best I have seen, all of them (the ones I saw) were really cute and their service and attitude to work top notch.

Despite the delay and the lost afternoon in MEX, LAN service is something worth to try.
A long time without flying a 767, the interiors were well kept and clean on blue with shades of purple, seat pitch ok, but no personal screen. I got the seat next to me empty and the load factor was about 80%, so all in all it was a happy flight. Nearly half of the passengers in this flight were heading to EZE, since it operates the route MEX-LIM-EZE.
Shortly after take off dinner was served, choices were, Lamb!, chicken or pasta, no printed menu, but the choices were told by the flight attendants in a fashionable way, like “Roasted lamb from the Andes with sweet potatoes and a greens bed…….you get the idea” as a difference of the traditional and plain way AA offers chicken or pasta sir?
I took the lamb which was really good, tender and tasty…….the bad thing is that if you choose wine in LAN, you get a glass a little bit bigger than a tequila shot, the quantity of liquid you get is ridiculous, but the good thing you get 2 or 3 rounds during the dinner and after there are several liquors offered as well.
The movie was The Bourne Supremacy, which I did not see because after dinner I slept all the way until final approach to LIM.
LIM is under a big construction work and as a temporary solution, the international terminal is a big warehouse, but somehow it is ok, I expected less and always is fun to prove me wrong.
Welcome to Lima, finally and my driver was waiting for me as planned, so I was happy and looking forward for the city.
THOUGHTS ON LIMA
I was pleasantly surprised about Lima and Peruvian people in general, they treat foreigners well, the food is great, it is not cheap but not expensive, definitely a place worth to visit.
You don’t need to take more nor less precautions for your self and belongings as you do it in any other big city, so don’t believe everything you read on the net.
Taxis are generally safe, as well as the public transport, but you need to know where you want to go and probably not recommended if you don’t speak Spanish. True, there are a lot of districts in Lima that are really unsafe even by day, but as a tourist, you don’t have anything to do there.
……I hope you are enjoying it…………..Return flights to come…………
