Well, it was finally time to end my holiday on the Islands and to begin my 18th flight to the mainland. I arrived at the airport around 8:30 to check in. I took my suitcase through the agricultural x-ray where they placed a sticker around the handle. Northwest check in was steps away. I was greeted by a friendly agent who directed me to the proper line for check in. After 8 minutes or so, I was at the electronic kiosk where I received my boarding pass. I was surprised to see the security line so short, and was in the terminal area in 2 minutes.

From there, I proceeded to the gate 10 where I would meet my aunt who works for United in HNL. She brought me down to the operations office where I saw her prepare the weight and balance for a 767 flight to LAX. After about an hour or so in the office, my aunt drove me in the United mini-van to a stairwell near my gate to deliver some paper work to the Customer Service office. We entered the terminal through a door right next to my gate. We said good bye and I went into the gate area.

At 10:15 they announced boarding for First Class and elite members. Then they began general boarding calling rows in groups of two. The whole process was swift and efficient. Upon entering the aircraft, I was astonished as to just how long these 757-300s are. I took my seat in the back of the aircraft and began to dose. Pushback from the gate occurred 10 minutes early. The flight was quite empty, and the middle seat next to me was unoccupied. During the pushback process, the cabin crew began the safety video. We taxied behind a United 777 which continued to runway 8R. At precisely 11:00PM, we began our takeoff roll from 8L. About 30 minutes into the flight, they began the meal and beverage service. The snack consisted of a ham sandwich, an apple and the normal assortment of beverages. After the rubbish was collected, I went to sleep.

Approximately one hour prior to arrival in LAX, the cabin crew woke the passengers up for our descent. The lights of Los Angeles were merely a distant ghostly glow off in the horizon. Our descent was quite shallow, but quite turbulent. At 5:40, we touched down on runway 24L. After a quick taxi, we pulled up to the gate. Now, to kill time for two hours at boring LAX.

We began the boarding process for my return flight to Minneapolis. The aircraft was the same that I had taken in from HNL. All First Class, elite members, and exit row passengers were asked to board the aircraft first. I again boarded this long aircraft, still in awe over the length of cabin, and took my seat in the prized exit row. Pushback was prompt on at 8:45. Concurrent with pushback, the cabin crew began a manual safety briefing demo. We took off from runway 24L and began our short trek over the Pacific, followed by a sharp turn towards Minneapolis. About 50 minutes into the flight, a breakfast was served. It was the typical Northwest breakfast basket with Cheerios, a banana, and a warmed bagel. I really can't complain about the meal, as it is hard to mess these items up. After the rubbish was collected, I brought out my laptop to watch some DVDs.

An hour outside of MSP, the captain announced we would be at the gate at 1:45, a full thirty minutes ahead of schedule, and for the cabin crew to prepare for the descent. At 1:35, we touched down on runway 12R, and by 1:45, we reached the gate. Deplaining the full flight took quite a while, nearly 15 minutes. As I walked down the jetway, it occurred to me just how really cold it was back here, and how I wish I could still be on the islands. It was an end to a wonderful holiday. I am so pleased that my hometown airline has improved it's service and quality.

Check-In: 10/10
Cabin Condition: 10/10
Cabin Crew: 10/10
Meal: 9/10 (really can't complain about anything)
Seating Comfort: 8/10
Inflight Entertainment: 7/10 (The movie, "Wimbleton", did not interest me.)
Overall: 9/10

Hope you enjoyed reading this. Hau`oli Makahiki Hou!
