Caracas - Boston And Back On Delta Via ATL. Pics!

Feb 13rd 2005.
Delta Airlines #912
Boeing 737-800 (N372DA)
Pushback: 10:00am (approx.)
Airborne: 10:20am (approx.)
Touchdown: 1:30pm (approx.)
Seat 12F
Pax load: 99%

Alright so I got to the airport pretty early around 7am. Delta's check-in wasn't even open yet so I waited. After asked procedural security questions I checked my baggage and was given a boarding pass for an aisle seat (I had a middle seat). I asked for a window but there were none available. Then I headed to the gates area and spotted LAB's beautiful B722 with winglets pushing back for departure to VVI. Then I went shopping in the duty free shop where I got 2 1-liter smirnoff vodka bottles. I managed to get some good shots which are currently in queue for screening in Airliners.net.

Boarding began aprox 40min before scheduled departure time and I was one of the last to board since I was seated in the 2nd coach row. When I got to my seat there was a pillow, blanket and a pair of delta headphones. I could see Air Canada's flight to Toronto boarding in the gate next to us:



We pushed back on time and taxied to runway 10 via taxiway A. I was so lucky to get a pic of my plane while taxing! take a look:

We were holding short behind an Aeropostal DC9, and there were also 2 GA planes holding shot in taxiway B for departure also. We had Continental's 73G bound for IAH behind us. We waited like 20mins. Just before we were cleared for take off, Conviasa's 733 landed in runway 10 as you can see in this pic.

In those pics you can see both GA planes I was talking about and the tail of CO's 73G holding behind us.

Finally we took off and made a left turn direct to Curaçao. A round of beverages was served and was followed 20min later by lunch. Lunch choices were either pasta or chicken and I took the later. The chicken's breast was pretty big compared to what I used to get in AA's flights. (first time I flew to the US in an airline diferent than AA). Shortly after another round of beverages was offered and then the movie began, this time was "Shall we dance?" feat. Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. The cabin crew announced that we would be getting another round of beveraged 30min before arrival but turbulence made it impossible.

We approached ATL from the south and joined the landing pattern for runway 9R. After a decent landing we exited the runway to the left and waiting to get clearance from the tower to cross runway 9L. We taxied to terminal E and disembarked. while walking to the inmigration area you could hear on PA: "Flight 912 just arrived from Caracas, get ready guys", then "Flight xxx just arrived from Milan, lets go!" it reminded me the movie "Terminal"!
Clearing inmigration was quick and easy (less than 5min, kudos to ATL! first time I Clear US inmigration so quick) and then I went downstairs to claim and re-check my baggage.

McDonnell Douglas MD88 (Nxxxx)
Pushback: 3:45pm (approx.)
Airborne: 4:00pm (approx.)
Touchdown: 6:00pm (approx.)
Seat 31E
Pax load: 100%

After taking the subway from terminal E to terminal A I had a pizza in Sbarros and then rushed to my gate. I was one of the last to board. Since I was flying with a group and we were the last to board, we delayed the flight 10mins because we had trouble finding space to store our carry-ons. We pushedback and quickly headed to runway 09L for departure. It was pretty clouded and I could only see grey out the window during the entire flight, even during cruise altitude. A quick round of beverages was served. It was a boring flight, no IFE, nothing to see out the window and a pissed off lady seating next to me. In top of that one of the FA's was very rude.

Finally we began our descent into Boston and clouds dissappeared. I began to see frozen lakes and rivers. The countryside was covered in white. We landed rough in runway 21L if Im not mistaken and taxied to terminal C. I claimed my luggage and took a cab to my hotel.


Feb 21st 2005.
Delta Airlines #349
Boeing 767-300 (N122DL)
Pushback: 12:40pm (approx.)
Airborne: 1:00pm (approx.)
Touchdown: 3:30pm (approx.)
Seat 34A
Pax load: 98%

That morning Boston woke up white. Snow had been falling since 3am and it was noon and snow was still falling. Due to weather our flight was 30min delayed and somehow our plane changed from a 757-200 to a widebody 767-300! What a surprise!! I took my window seat and regretted than I had put my delta headphones in my checked baggage  Sad. You dont get free headphones for domestic flights.

We pushed back and had to wait 20min in front of the gate while a convoy of snow removing yellow trucks cleared the taxiway. We finally took off and flew alongside the coast for a while. During cruise we had a round of drinks. The FA's in this flight were very nice, one of them even offered to take a pic of my group  Smile. We came down very soft in runway 27L if im not mistaken and taxied to our gate in terminal A.

Feb 21st 2005.
Delta Airlines #871
Boeing 737-800 (Nxxxx)
Pushback: 5:00pm (approx.)
Airborne: 5:15pm (approx.)
Touchdown: 10:10pm (approx.)
Seat 14A
Pax load: 80%

After taking the tram from terminal A to terminal E, I had a quick pizza in pizzahut and then headed to my gate. I boarded the 738 and quickly settled in my window seat. I managed to take this great sunshine pic of this DL 763:



After pushback we waited alongside an Airtran 717 for taxing clearance.


We got lucky and got clearance before the 717 even though we got there later  Smile. We took off and made a tight left turn down south to Florida. We flew over Jacksonville and then over the Bahamas. We had a round of beverages and then dinner, choice was beef or chicken. I took the beef and it was also good, it included a chocolate brownie as dessert. After dinner another round of drinks was served and then coffee. Movie this time was about a Texan High School football team fighting for the state championship. I didn't like it.

After passing Haiti we encounted some mild turbulence and the captain decided to ask Curaçao ATC for a lower cruise level. We went down from 35,000 ft to 31,000. Turbulence then disappeared and when we flew over Curaçao our descent into CCS began. We touched down on time on runway 10. Thank god we got there first before AA's JFK, MIA, DFW and CO's IAH arrivals, so the inmigration line wasnt that long for us. It was long for us (around 45min) and we were practically in the front of the line compared to other pax (poor people, they probably had to wait almost 2hrs in line). I claimed my bags and went out to meet my relatives that were waiting for me. Its good to be home  Smile


Summary

This was my first Delta experience and it was great. Im starting to prefer DL over AA for my US flights. ATL is a great hub, inmigration there beats MIA and DFW anytime. Good meals, good IFE. Pretty good Delta! 9/10 for you.

Thanks for the awesome trip report man. The pictues you posted show where A.net goes wrong. Most of the pics on A.net are glossy and high quality (fake). I like your pictures, and pictures like yours, simple because it shows the average view of the common traveller. They have a beauty all their own.

The cheapest you can get is CCS-MIA on Lan Chile. They fly 2X weekly I believe but their schedules are pretty odd. Then we have Santa Barbara that fly 2X daily except sundays which are 1X daily and they charge USD 180 plus taxes for roundtrip.

I must add that Santa Barbara does not ticket online. You must go through a travel agent or directly through them. I have never been able to contact their reservations department so we use Costamar Travel. Tel 800-428-8687.

Oh crap, well you are travelling CCS-MIA so it doesnt matter.

Good report, I'm glad that you liked Delta. Also, I don't know if AA is even serving meals on these flights anymore? Or is it just BOB for all domestic flights? Well good report none the less
