Well, I had flew this route so many times because of my job and YYZ is one of my most favourite destination.
On March 6, I was flying Air Canada AC192, registration C-FKPS, a Airbus A320 aircraft to Toronto to fix my computer in Markham, Ontario. When I was checking in with the "Express Check In" automatic check in service, the stupid machine does not allow me to do so and asked for a credit card number. How come I need to have a credit card to check in? Weird... Even though I have it, I don't want to use it because of security measure. The 250 Aeroplan points more is nothing compared to security.
Then, I proceed to the check in counter to check in. When I was the 5th of the line up, one agent came by and asked for my destination. The flight's schedule departure time was 6:45 am and I was in the line-up at 6:19 am. So, she asked me to go in the front and get an agent to check me in immediately. What a service, I like it! Since I needed to bring a mid sized desktop computer onto the aircraft, so, I asked the agent to give me a tag says "Approved Cabin Baggage". She was so nice and asked me to put the computer on the balance.
The weight of my computer is 25 pounds. You know, it had already passed the limit of cabin baggage(which is being 22.2 pounds). The agent asked me what's in the box(I used my DVD player's box to store my computer). I said, a computer. Then, she was so nice and gave me the special tag. Also, she asked me to put that in the seat in front of me. Instead, I put the computer on the seat in front of the seat besides. The A320 only has around 28 passenger in the economy class. So, I can get the whole three seats on the A320. The breakfast was nice, which is scrambbled eggs, with sausage, hash brown, some fruits and orange juice. When the aircraft arrived YYZ, they had light snow in the airport. What I can tell is, YYZ CANNOT handle the light snow at all. Except the runway, all ways that is used by the aircraft were snow covered. My plane needed 20 minutes to taxi back to Terminal 2 from the runway.
When I am back, my flight was AC197, departing at 21:40. The agent at Pearson Airport Terminal 2 was awful. I really hate him. I asked the same question as I asked about the computer in Winnipeg. He did not say anything when I asked. Then, I asked him again three times, and he said NO. Then, I replied, and says, Winnipeg agent allowed me to do so. Then, he seems like mad and me and handle my boarding pass and the approved cabin baggage tag to me and did not smile at all. Like I had made him getting mad. What an awful service. When I was about to board the aircraft, there were lots of people waiting in the waiting area.
I was thinking, what's the problem here? The reason is, another AC flight AC149, which flies from YYZ to YVR on Airbus A330-300 got overbooked. They sent those affected passengers to my flight and gave them a hotel room in Winnipeg. During this flight, the plane has around 100 passengers in the economy class. I was forced to put the computer onto the overhead baggage storing area. Fortunately, the seat besides me does not have any passenger on board. The meal was nice, with some smoked turkey and ham. A bread, cheese, butter and lots of veggies. I like it.

One final suggestion is, if AC cannot make their ground agent to be as good as their air service, they will lose their passengers to something like CanJET, WestJET, etc. Anyway, I had wrote a letter to Air Canada to complain that mad agent in Counter 18, Terminal 2.

The reason it asks you for a credit card number is to verify who you are! All computer check-ins do that unless the frequent flyer cards have a magnetic strip on them. Otherwise, who is to stop some random person from walking up, keying in a random last name and getting a ticket? It doesn't do anything to your credit card except verify the number belongs to the person holding the ticket.

I used the Express Check In at Toronto last April. You should've chosen to use your Aeroplan card instead of a credit card. They computer needs to verify your name, once that's done your flight info will show up, then you will be able to print boarding passes.

Well, I did use my magnetic Aeroplan card to check in. However, they don't allow me to do so. That's strange.
