After I finished packing up at Purdue University, It was time for my mother and I to drive down to the Indianapolis International Airport for the flight home to New York City. We arrived at the main terminal area at IND about an hour before our flight on a very hot and humid early May evening. We waited for abut 15 minutes on the Northwest Check-in Line, then checked in at the E-kiosks about 45 min before our flight. This was later than we had planned, but we got held up meeting some friends. My mother and I became nervous when our boarding passes had no seats on them, and it said the flight was over-booked. After passing through security, we walked all the way down the A concourse to gate A8B, where we asked the NW agents what was going on. They said they didnt have seats for us, but becuase they had enough volunteers they should be able to get us on the flight. After about 5 minutes of worrrying, the agents called my name and handed my mother and I FIRST CLASS tickets to seats 1-A and 1-B. The guy was like "will this be fine, this is all we have left." My mom and I were thrilled to get the free upgrade, even though it was on such a short flight. We had time to run over to the Starbucks. At that point, I noticed how busy the Northwest concourse was. It was packed with people boarding A319s and DC9s to all kinds of places. They seem to really be doing a good job with their focus city in Indy. I remember back when I started freshman year, they only served DTW,MSP and MEM. Anyway, we walked back to the gate, and proceeded onto our DC-9 after handed the man our boarding passes.

IND-LGA
Date: May 8, 2005
Airline: Northwest
Flight#: 324
Aircraft: DC-9
Registration: N962N
Seat: 1A
Dep Time: 1738 (on time)
Arr Time: 2033 (5 min late)
Dep Gate: A8B
Arr Gate: 10

As we walked on to plane, I was greeted by friendly flight attendants, and even the First Officer. The plane looked like many Northwest aircraft, a little old, but very clean, and comfortable. This was one of the few times I had gotten to ride in first class. I noticed the wide seats and lots of leg room. As I sat in seat 1-A, here was the nice wing view looking out at the ramp in Indy:

We soon started out Pushback out to NY right on time (a company 319 can be seen at the gate next to us, this one just got in from somewhere):

The flaps were set for takeoff, and we began our taxi to Runway 23R. You can see a NW Airbus and some WN 737s parked at the other side of the A Concourse:

We made a quick taxi to runway 23R and you can see here we were lining up:

The powerfull little DC-9 began it's takeoff roll:

The DC-9 quickly rotated off of 23R and lifted into the hot, hazy, and humid Indiana sky. You can see runway 23L and the new control tower in this shot:

We continued our climb over some internstate and began our big left turn towards the Northeast:

We continued a very smooth climb, and I looked out the window at the endless farms that blanket the Midwest. The captain came on and announced our flight time to LGA was 1hr and 39 min. He said we would have a very smooth flight (it wass), but the descent would be bumpy due to gusty winds in the New York area. The route of the flight took us much farther north than any of the other IND-LGA flights that I had been on. We flew Northeast up to Cleavland, then flew parallel to the south of Lake Erie for a while. We then banked to the East and flew over Northern Pennsylvania, over some pretty "mountains." This took us over North Central New Jersey, where we turned North for LGA.

I was kind of surprised with the First Class service on NW. There were no pre departure drinks offered, and there was no meal served on the flight. This was kind of surprising, but I guess I cant complain, becuase It was a short flight and I didnt't even pay for it! The seats were very comfortable I must say.

Here we are flying over what I think is Hopkins Airport in Cleveland (CLE), I have never been there, so maybe some CLE people can confirm this for me. I assume that it is CLE, becuase It was right next to Cleveland (i think)

CLE:

The city, and some General Aviation airport on the lake (I forget the name):

As the sun was setting below the horizon, the DC-9 began its descent into the New York area:

We began a series of turns over New Jersey, and many Lights of Newark came into view. Before I knew It, we were turning north over the Jersey shore. I had a beautiful view of Manhattan at dusk, out on the left side of the plane. Too bad It was too dark to take pictures. We were doing the Expressway Visual Approach into runway 31 at LGA, which is really cool, especially if you are on the left side of the plane. I could see LGA and Shea Stadium off to our left, then before I knew it, the DC-9 dropped the gear and started rapdily descending and making a hard left turn to line up with the runway. I could count like 5 planes behind us, all approaching runway 31 at LGA. We firmly touched down around 830 local time, and the pilots slammed on the brakes to hold short of runway 4 (aircraft were departing). We had a quick taxi to gate 10 at the Delta/Northwest Terminal. I was the first person off the plane, which was cool. I really like the Northwest terminal at LGA, becuase in like 2 minutes you are out of the terminal and In baggage claim.

Reflection: It was another good trip on Northwest. I have been taking them more lately (becuase of the Indy hub) and I have noticed that NW always has a soild (safe, comftorable, on-time) domestic product. I will take NW on the LGA-IND route, which I fly quite frequently, becuase I would much rather take a DC-9 or A320 nonstop than a ERJ on US Airways nonstop.

This was my first photo trip report, any questions/comments?
My next trip will be on tuesday (tomorrow) when I fly LGA-MSY on the AA MD80.

Burke Lakefront, Cleveland, OH.

I'd bet that A319 just got in from LAX-- I took the LAX-IND flight and it arrives in the latter half of the 5:00 hour.

Yeah, Indy is a busy little place for NW, and so is LGA...since I took LGA-IND in Dec they've upgraded 2 of the 3 flights to mainline.

Did they get any help out in IND? Over the holidays they were painfully understaffed- and gate agents were sometimes working two gates at the same time practically!

Purdue is a highly regarded university? It is wonderful that you are studying there. What is your major?

The guy was like "will this be fine, this is all we have left."

Plain and simple. Sounds like a veteran NW agent.

5 minutes late? LGA has a reputation of delayed arriving flights (1+ hour delay)

I can see that! You had the nicest seat!

No pre departure drinks? I find that little odd. Oh well... Maybe you should write a letter to NWA Corporation?

Since it is your first report, I will give you a grade of C+ for your first trip report.  checkmark

I'm glad you experienced a smooth climb. I flew on N962N last July JFK-DTW and it was anything but! While flying through a cloud, one of the engines made a loud bang noise that shocked the entire cabin. We later found out it was only static.

Here is a cabin shot:
