This is a long story…

It happened I was supposed to take vacations with a friend. The idea was a trip around USA. In March, at LAN.com, I got a tkt that was: SCL-MIA, MIA-LAX, LAS-SFO, SFO-BOS, JFK-SCL per $1100!

But, as we say in Chile, “the man propose, God decide”… my friend left me alone with my vacation. So I had money, a couple of weeks and no idea where to go, since I didn’t want to go to USA by my own (and I actually spent the $100 for a Visa renewal…)

So, I read in the paper an Iberia ad: Madrid per $850. And I said “ok, I would travel alone to Europe”. But… I called LA and I figured out that only 1/3 of the miles flown by Iberia counts for LanPass… and since I am accumulating miles for going to Australia next year, and I’m very close, FF was very important. LAN then launched MAD at $950. So I decided to fly LAN, got better service and add miles to my account.

Then I had to decide where to go within Europe, considering I’ve been there before. I took a look at Iberia at the beginning of April, and there were very good fares! The same for British Airways. So, these are the fares I got (tax not included)

LA SCL-MAD-SCL: US$950
IB MAD-ORY-MAD: EUR 82
BA CDG-LHR-CDG: EUR 66
IB MAD-SVQ / GRX-MAD: 91

A lot of flights for such a few time. But I decided to do it anyway, besides it was the first time travelling alone…

Let’s review

The trip begins. I reserved an aisle seat in the doubles columns at the rear of the plane. My hope is that no one took the window seat, so I would have them both. How naive. I was seated there till I watched my flight mate… a woman with a baby! So I thought: this looks bad, I will have to stand up a thousand times for her to go around.
A few minutes before taxing, the f/a asked me if I wanted to move to the couple of seats in front of us which were empty. So, I left here my previously reserved 37J and moved to 36 J and K!

We left gate on time, and we started taxing. It was funny because I had flown that very week for work to CCP, and I flew a 319 and a 732, so it was the 3rd flight of the week in a 3rd aircraft type. We took of slowly and smoothly as usual in a 343. All aircraft in SCL take off heading south on runway 17. Most flights going north turn right a few seconds after take off, but when they go to MAD, thy turn is much wider, and the aircraft actually flies west for a couple of minutes. Since I was alone in both seats, I could watch all the movements.

I was so happy and felt incredibly lucky… till that very moment. I was concentrated looking Santiago when an old lady sat next to me: “hi, a woman next to me was carrying a child, so I offer her my seat and the f/a moved me next to you”… so there I was, trapped by an old lady!
Dinner was great as usual. Salad, meat, rice, desert, coffee, wine, whisky, amaretto cream… delicious! Since I’m very good for bread, I asked a second portion. She passed me one and said me “sure, so you one just one more?”. Great service, as usual. Good for LAN!
I then watched “National Treasure”. Other options?: Ocean Twelve, the last of Jim Carry, Spanglish and some magazine channels.
I tried to sleep then, but it wasn’t easy; there was a couple in front of me (I won’t say their nationality), but I thing they had eaten a lot, if you know what I mean! Besides, some occasional turbulence woke me up from time to time. After a couple of hours, I just woke up and realized that outside it was day already. I watched then “Spanglish” on my PTV (I recommend Spanglish a lot, with Tea Leoni and Paz Vega, great! Specially the girl actress). I took a look outside over the Atlantic, and I couldn’t believe it! I could watch our own contrail, at last! I took a photo, but it looks just as a cloud…Landing at 13.30 (30 mins early).

MAD? My God such a nightmare of airport! Ugly as usual, full of buildings with no sense of unity, sooo long. When I bough my tkt to ORY I was worried about not having enough time to connect, and now I had almost 4 hours! I must walked it about a hundred times (now I wonder why didn’t I go to downtown, maybe because I was so tired!).
My baggage was checked all the way to ORY in SCL, so I didn’t have to claim it. Immigration was fast, and I had a lot of time to wait in Barajas…

Although I web checked at home, I decided to go to a counter. I got a new boarding pass. Since I was that tired, I just walked to my gate. I must confess that it wasn’t easy for me to match terminal 1,2 and 3 with gates A,B,C,D and E… but I did it. I took a nap at a seat, till they call us to board. We took a bus to our Boeing 757, BTW, I chose it due to I never flew a 757 before (as Iberia, my first time!). I was seated on seat 9, the one in the actual central door where all of us boarded, so I had to move my legs everytime someone entered.
Not much to say about this flight, it was on time, the crew was actually very friendly. Some “relaxing” images of birds and sighs in the screens. The food was charged, and not cheap at all.
Paris was rainy, so when the reversers deployed the water on the runway was pushed ahead of the engine. The jetway was placed at the front door, not next to me. I was happy to see my bag safe after being labelled in SCL and connected in MAD!

BA changed the a/C, since this flight was supposed to be flown by a 320. I arrived on time to CDG, terminal 2B. great connecting bus system among terminals! I was exited since I as I kid I watched a photo of this “8 shape” terminal and I always wanted to be there, and my only time before in CDG was connecting in 2E.
We had passport control, and I was kind of lost with the layout: first immigration, then counter –among gates-. When I found the counter, the lady in a very lousy English told me that the flight was full, and I couldn’t get a windows or aisle seat, so she gave me a center seat. I started to watch the stores, and I was passing metal control when I realized that no one was in the hall and they were public addressing calling me, but I was on time, right? Wrong! My watch had stopped and I was actually very delayed, but I got it! I took the lat bus, took a long ride and then 2 surprises: 1. it was a 321 (the fifth flight in a row in a fifth different a/c!) and 2. it was gorgeous! Leather seats shining, interior shining, all look so perfect! I was impressed since the very beginning with BA, and in such a short flight! The only problem that next to me in the window seat (which lacked one window, leaving a large fuselage wall right there in between the other 2 windows) there was this fat guy that immediately started to sleep! And he left so little space for me to look outside that wonderful airport.
Very turbulent flight, specially while descending. In flight service just as impressive as the rest: kind crew, a great snack served in a carton box very well wrapped; a sandwich, fruit, drinks…the flight map displayed in the screens.
After landing, we used a jetway and went to immigration process. Fast, some question “about my intentions” (not rude at all, very “efficient”). It actually made me laugh some signs warning passengers that the UK takes very seriously any sort of thread against officers.
After I claimed by bag, I took the replacing bus service to the tube station, a bus with great view of large aircraft as 744s landing in the runway next to us.

London? I LOVED LONDON!

I arrived on time by tube to Heathrow T4 and again connecting with the bus since the line is under work. Funny how they have some people hired to assist passenger with their bags at the station since there is no escalator.
Again, they told me that the flight was full and I didn’t get a window or aisle seat, so they gave me the 30B. Again, the aircraft was changed from a 320 to a 321. But, the woman told me to ask before boarding if there was a chance to move me to a window seat.
T4 was very interesting for me, some good stores (including one of the British Museum).
Since I was advised that it would take me about 15 minutes to walk to the gate, and after what happen to me in Paris, I got there on time, but the people was already boarding. When I showed my boarding pass, I asked to be moved and I was lucky, they did! This is how I got 32A. Then, the most funny thing that ever happened to me in an airport:

You’ll see, I’ve never flown a 747 and I do want to!. I started to walk down the jetway till I realised the aircraft in front of me was kind of big… I looked outside a tiny window and suddenly all my prayers became true: it was a 744.
But me and a couple of passengers behind started to note something weird: it was empty and it seemed used and not cleaned. Since it was obviously a mistake, I acted like “I want to check” since this was my first time on a 744. They kept calling at me “hey, come back” and I kept answering “I’m coming, let me see”.
Sad reality, I returned and I realized that we wasn’t supposed to walk down the jetway, but to take a side door to a stairs and a bus.

The flight was great again, as British Airways. I got to see the Concorde in display, soft flight, great view, great breakfast service (although it was all sweet, I missed something salted: fruit, a cake, yoghurt).
BTW, the Airbus 321 must be one of the smoothest aircraft I ever been! I’m not an airbus fan at all, but it really felt incredible! Even for heavy turbulence was soft, stable, elegant! I loved it!
Arriving in CDG, again passport control (with no stamp on my passport), baggage claim, Paris… Paris was one of my favourite cities in the world. Although I only went to Paris this time for visiting Versailles, I really felt uncomfortable in the city! I couldn’t wait to get out of there! For some reason, Paris “broke with me”…

There are 4 flights remaining, but this report is becoming too long. I will complete it later. Besides, I have to fly again early in the morning.

WILL BE CONTINUED…

Nice report, It's a shame that you had to travel alone though  Sad.

Question: why do you only get 30% of the miles flown on IB? OneWorld sucks if that's true... I'm a SkyTeam flyer (Delta Skymiles member) and I get 100% miles on any carrier that is part of Skyteam plus other non-skyteam airlines that have agreements with Delta, especially Avianca which offers cheap flights from CCS connecting in BOG.

Luis

Actually, I got shocked today... I reviewed my balance, and not only IB worth 1/3... with BA you only get 25%!!!!!!!!!!!
I called LAN, since there are 2 flight missing still, and I wondered about it. He told me "oh yes, IB and BA don't give more mile for LanPass holders".

I agree, although I have no idea how Star or Sky work, OW sucks big...

I don't know, as I told you, been there before and I couldn't wait to return... but so expensive, so unfriendly, so dirty, smelly... as I told you, I got a shock!

Really nice report, thanks! Hope you're having fun with the next legs of your flight! Too bad for that 744! I love them, last time I flew one was TG BKK-ZRH on a 744 HS-TGR! Always nice to do so!

Hope to hear the end of your trip soon! Cheers

AND HERE IS THE END
Saturday 28 may / Iberia, ORY-MAD 752 Uruguay again. Seat 20A (window)

OK, I finally left Paris. It was very easy to take the whole way to ORY using the metro-Rer-Orlyval.
Although I spend a few minutes finding the IB counter, I did it. Although I got there very early, ther was some people waiting already. Once again, I would connect at MAD for a flight to Seville, so I asked the girl to check my bag all the way to SVQ. I was terrified when I realized she wrote with a pen “SVQ via MAD”! I mean, I though these bar codes meant something, but she did it AFTER it was printed…
A few walks around ORY, no much to say. I think it’s good and nice enough, but nothing impressive.
There was a lot of people from Gabon on that aircraft (I watched their passport). They were given all the rear of the plane, and it was funny; I had the three seats for me only, but they were seated next to each other, using central seats and everything.
I didn’t take breakfast, so I took my expensive euros and bought some food: a breakfast with a yoghurt, donut, coffee. Too sweet and oily… not disgusting, but far from good.
The flight was very pleasant; almost no turbulence, and the engines kept making a soft roaring that was perfect for a nap. But, IB adds some extra back support over the arm resters, so it’s kind of hard to lift them to lay on the three seats (or it is easy, but I didn’t get it…). I must confess I felt a little guilty when I walked around the aisle and watch all the room I got compared to the guys in the rear.
Anyway, we landed in MAD on time, no immi control and again, a time to die in MAD. I paid again and took paella for lunch.

Again, a new aircraft for Arcano, the MD88… After boarding, there was this Italian seated in my seat, and I told him he was in the wrong seat. But he insisted.. I had to say “mio” (mine) with strong voice and that was it, my seat mate moved to the asile. I was in the left window seat.
This bird looked a little old fashion to me; the curtain handle, the ceiling, the seats… it looked as some photos you see of the 60s. The crew friendly again, too friendly; I got they were honoured glad and that since I was a OW member I would get special treatment, but at this time it started to sound annoying.
We land in San Pablo airport, not very nice but good enough. I went to baggage claim belt. It stopped and nothing, my suitcase was not there, as the ones of at least 15 passengers with me!
So, they told us to walk to another hall where there was a counter for making the paperwork, and there it was! My suitcase in front of the counter!

I loved Andalucia and my admiration for Spain grew once again. I went to Malaga by train and to Granada by bus. I didn’t like Granada that much, though…

My last IB flight. Although GRX airport is kind of far of the city, It was easy and cheap to get there by bus. I took a tortilla sandwich, waited for a a minutes watching some Ryanair operations and the arrival of my aircraft. Nice small airport, it reminds me my frequent airport of La Serena (LSC); almost the same size, the same facilities.
I passed metal control, but it was so sensitive, we were all rejected! Even my shoelaces beeped!
And what was worst, after that I looked for a public telephone to call a friend in Madrid, and there wasn’t any. So I had to go out the hall, to outside the terminal. The officer made me enter again directly without doing the line again. How kind.
Another dream came true: I was able to use the rear stair below the tail! I wanted to do that since I watched the UC 727s back in the 80s!
I got the emergency seat, next to me there was a very nice girl.
Smooth flight, and back to Madrid to the end of my vacations.

I was in MAD before in January. Madrid at springtime is so different, it must be one of the finest places on earth! I left 2 days for the city since I already knew it, so wrong! I would say there a month!
Of course, as everything else Madrid lacks something: A DECENT AIRPORT:

Barajas, the disaster begins…

I bough some gadgets in Madrid, and as a foreigner I had the right to have the value added tax returned, to be done it in the airport.
I don’t know how many flight were supposed to leave Madrid at midnight, but there were a lot. And guess what, the airport that intends to grow and handle I don’t know how many passengers had only 1 passport and metal control. I was in the line for 1 hour! Do can you imagine how many time did I had for paper work, walking to the gate and board? 5 minutes…
So, I got to the place, the send me to another window and the guy, very rudely, told me that he needed a stamp sent me to the metal control officer (“custom”). Then, this guy in very gently way sent me to some office that of course was closed. So the “solution” for me was to went out, get stamped, do the line again and then we could start refunding. As you can imagine, I lost 40 euros.
They didn’t take my card that I was supposed to present at the airport with my passport.

I run to the gate and there it was, a fully painted A340 waiting for me to board. Many of us got there running after the delay at immigration.

I got to my seat, still mad about Barajas. There was a woman at the window already seated. Despite the delays of ours, the a/c left the gate with only 5 minutes delay, and begun taxiing.
There were fireworks in the surrounding areas! (I hope Spain wasn’t celebrating I was leaving).
Soft acceleration, soft take off, we could still see the fireworks from the sky and while the aircraft was turning.
Dinner time. In the seat next to me, there was a Chilean old man talking with the flight attendant while she was offering the menu. I could hear: “oh, lady, I’ve just travelled in many airlines and I can tell you there’s nothing as the warm crew of LAN”. She smiled, thanked, and told the man “although it’s my job, it’s always nice to hear such gentle compliment”.
I actually joked here when she offered me the menu: pasta or chicken with smashed potatoes. I told her “do I need to flatter you as well?” she laughed and reply to me “nooo, all my passengers are attended the same”. How wouldn’t love LAN????
At first time I though the menu was kind of boring, and I didn’t got more bread since it was already packed in every tray. But it was so delicious! The potatoes were served on a base of raisins, and the chicken had a BBQ taste. GREAT!!!!!!

I tried to watch a movie, then I realized I was tired, we were just leaving Europe behind. I made myself comfortable, put on my light mask, my ear plugs and I knew no more for 8 hours in a row sleeping, no turbulence, the best flight ever!

The eggs of the breakfast were hard to digest, after almost a straight line Madrid – San Juan we overflew smoothly the mountains. Sunrise at the horizon and AGAIN! The contrails against a very light blue and orange that started to rise over the Andes.

So I’m back in Santiago, fast immigration control, some duty free shopping for some friends and that was it.

Let’s Rank

Airport:
1. Heathow T4
2. SCL
3. CDG
4. ORY
5. MAD
6. GRX
7. SVQ

Aircraft:
1. 321
2. 340
3. 757 (by far)
4. MD87
5. MD88

Airline
1. LAN
2. British Airways
3. Iberia

Some comments:

Although I rank LAN first, depending on what I look, BA could go first. Better aircraft and excellent service. LAN has warmest crew, and the same excellent service, comparing CDG-LHR with some LanEx flights as SCL-CPP or CPO-SCL

I didn’t feel the famous rudeness of Iberia crew. They were very friendly, warm, professional. IB lacks service; it’s a shame they sell you the food and some other articles as it was a Persian market. It makes me not to recommend to fly IB. But they are friendly.

MAD… no more comments. I hate Barajas, although I do like the fact that it’s directly connected to the city by regular subway.

One World… LAN promotes OW in their magazines: “it’s ok if you don’t always fly LAN”. But with the tiny percentage among airlines, OW sucks. It happens the same in Star or Sky?

Best moment: the wrong 744 boarding… Worst moment: my “lost” baggage in SVQ/poor connection to Seville, I had to wait 45 minutes for the bus

Best city: London-Madrid; Worst city: Paris/Granada

Best country for tourism: Spain; Worst country for tourism: France

Best “to do”: Feria del Libro, Madrid

Just some toughts. Hope you enjoyed…

It has grown already...didn't you see the new terminals and runways?...more than 5 billion Euros have been spent.

Quoting Arcano (Reply 5):
and handle I don’t know how many passengers

70 million. Will surpass the 40 million mark this year.

Quoting Arcano (Reply 5):
only 1 passport and metal control.

There are 3 passport/security checkpoints in Terminal 1 (the one that handles all intercontinental traffic). The other 2 could have been closed due to the late hours (not always)...but there are three. Thank God the situation you describe is not a common thing for the more than 38 million pax that went through MAD last year.

Quoting Arcano (Reply 5):
I hate Barajas

It can be clearly seen, as placing it below ORY and LHR's T4 (not been to SCL though) even more if your flight departed from T1's south boarding area is giving it a very low, undeserved score.
CDG can be OK if you are at the new area, but don't tell me the old Terminal 1 is nice.

I am sorry to hear that...but be ready, as from early next year you will have a much bigger Barajas to hate when the new terminals are open.  Smile

Anyway...good and well detailed report. Glad to hear you had a good time in Europe.

Come back anytime and I'll invite you to a few beers at the Plaza Mayor.

Surely, but as posted, even at 5 am in SCL you will find it fully operative, perhaps only some duty free shops closed. The one at arrival level opens 24/7

Quoting IBERIA747 (Reply 7):

Well, it's a biased answer. You'll see. In terms of a regular pax, SCL is much nicer and comfortable/clean/beautiful than LHR. But of an aviation fan like me, to see all those 747s, all those airlines I'll never see in Santiago, the unfamiliar stores... I have more fun, based mostly in the traffic and the new stuff for me, captas?

I forgot to post something funny.

In the flight MAD-SVQ, there were some guys that couldn't find their seats, since there were some other pax on them. Short tell: those guys boarded the wrong a/c! nobody noted it!!!
But they were able to unboard on time, although I have no idea if they boarded their actual flight or not.

I could not agree more. My recent experience with LA was FANTASTIC. Chile was fantastic, too. A great airline in a great country.

Funny story with the 744 at LHR! It happened to me exactly the same thing at LHR 4. I was flying to LYS just before Christmas, so an a/c change would have made sense since many British people fly to the Alps for skiing. But I got the scheduled 319 (note it would have been a significant a/c upgrade!) instead. After having taken the bus, too.

I had the same reaction as you for the same reason: I had never been on a 747 at that time.

Arcano:
It was a real pleasure to meet you at ORY  Smile And it's a pity you dislike Barajas, my home and "querido" aeropuerto

On the other hand, OW could be a little bit more generous with his customers. When I return Madrid I would like to fly IB, but it could to do it depending if IB has a better offer than AF. Anyway, take the "TALGO-camas" (daily night trein Paris-Madrid) is also a very good idea.

Alfonso ...how are you?
Luis ...you're right about the SkyT (I'm a AF-KL's Flying Blue member)

To everybody ... à bientôt de Paris!

How could you not love Granada!? I've just spent 5 months living there and it's the most wonderful city! I'm personally offended!

Great report all the same - Granada airport is indeed a lovely little place.
