Departure Time - 3:20
New Livery with Winglets
We took the free shuttle from our hotel to the airport after spending three days at the North American Irish dance Nationals. The forum of was the Gaylord Opryland which was huge. Here is a picture of one of 4 atriums.
This is the Delta Atrium
We arrived at a midly busy airport about 3 hours early. We went to the ticketless check-in kisosk and printed out our boarding passes (well at least for my mother and myself). There was an issue with my grandmother's pass because she had a senior citizen ticket, and you have to have assistance with them because then people could use the discount, and not be senior citizens at these machines. So, after the friendly assistance of a customer service agent. We made our way to the quick security line. Everyone was in high spirits as it was July fourth, and we went to D7 our gate. I left and went to snap some shots of the mostly empty airport. There are many gates, but most of the time, very few are occupied. Here are some of the pictures.
This MD-80 was bound for La Guardia
The ERJ was just in from Houston
Couldn't catch where she was bound, but I think it was ATL
I was happy to get an IndyAir which was in from Dulles
The US Airways section was the most crowded next to WN
I went for a walk across the airport to the A and B councourses, after getting a cinnamon bun, and strolling the boring D area. Nashville wasn't that crowded, and I was surprised how little of the gates are actually being used at anyone time. The WN area is the most crowded, and WN I think probably has the largest amount of planes and flight from there. After getting back to the gate, I heard this "Apparently, a flight to Jacksonville is having problems with their airplane, so, we are going to use our airplane for their flight, and we will have to wait for a flight from Oakland to use. This is a 45 min. dealy". Okay, this kind of pissed me off, I am in a boring airport, and you are making us use our own plane for their flight! Why can't they just wait for the Oakland one. We shouldn't be penalized for that mishap. So, I sat down with my iPod and listened to music. We were the first people in the A line, because I got in line 3 hours before boarding . The line was growing, and much to my surprise, there was NO turnaround time on that aircraft from Oakland. The passengers got off, and then we got on, and the aircraft was still very clean! I don't care for preboarders when there are such a huge amount of them. I mean come on, these people were passing off their kids as 5 when I heard him say he was turning 9 the next day. That really pisses me off! So, I was first on the plane for A line and got a good place over the wing for some pic's. I loved this shot of the winglets, and the aircraft next to us.
The aircraft next to us, matching nicely with the winglets!
My nice legroom on the plane
Quite quickly, we pushed back, and here is a view of some of the WN planes at the gates around us.
This was the aircraft that was having mechanical problems, and was put on remote stand away from the gates
Because of the low traffic levels, we got to the runway quite quickly, and we rolled on for a powerfull takeoff.
Going onto the runway
We were having a very bumpy climb because of all of the storms. When 10,000 ft. was announced, I got out my DVD player and began Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
The F/A's just got the standard snack boxes out when they were asked to take their seats because it was a bumpy ride! We were told that we would be crusing all the way to 40,000 feet! The F/A's did not get up till we got there, and yet we still had some bumps for the next hour! I ordered a ginger ale and sat down with my movie.
My battery on the camera was running low, so I limited pic's until landing. I took this one to show how it looked outside the window for almost the whole flight.
The view below until we hit the desert!
The aircraft was VERY cold, and the ginger ale didn't help, so I got myself a hot chocolate when the 2nd drink service came around. It was nicely served to me, and we had a great crew. In total, 4 drink services took place, and you could get them by ringing your call button whenever you would like one. I got another ginger ale, and then a hot chocolate again, and finsihed my movie. Then I got up to use the bathroom, because four drinks fills you up fast ! When I sat down and filled out my review sheet. Approach was being announced, and that landing would take place in 25 min.
This is when approach was annoucned, I wante to conserve the battery until later so not many shots on approach will be shown.
Starting Final Approach
There were many Northwest A320's parked at T3, but I took this one because it was in the new colors
Sun Country bound for MSP
Constrution of the new Control Tower at PHX
We pulled into our gate, and next to us was an ATA 757 bound for HNL
I am not very fond of tghe ATA livery, I think it looks unprofessional, and quite ugly
I manged to get a picture of the A/C at PHX, because I couldn't at Nashville because there were not windows. Here she is!
I must say that I really enjoyed the flight. Here is my breakdown.
Check In 10/10
Very efficient with the kiosks.
Boarding Process 5/5
First in line for A. If I wasn't, would've been a 0/5. I don't like the groups, and the lining up.
IFE is extra credit, there was none (duh).
Impeccable. 4+ drink services offered, when on the flight over only 1. A smiling, happy, efficent, and professional crew. Handled delay very well.
Seat Comfort 10/10
Cleanliness of A/C 10/10
w/ NO turn-around time!
Departure/Arrival ON TIME 5/20
45 min. dealy was stupid. Why use our aircraft when they could've just waited until the one we used came.
Extra Credit +5/5
Extra support @ check in and handled the delay very well.
Comments -90/100 - 90%
Would've been 100% if there wasn't a delay. Great flight, and my expectations were blown away by WN!

Southwest is all about being timely and efficient, so they decided to better anger your group of passnegers then theres, the flight u heard could have been the last one to JAX and they didnt want to over night in BNA, so they took yours. I dont know if this is true, but Wn handled the delay quite well I think, and 45 minutes, just fine for me, more time for the airport. Great report, SWA is a fantastice airline to fly, one of my favorite, looking forward to flying them friday to PHX myself.
Good things come to those who wait, better things come to those who go AFTER it!

As a WN customer service agent I can tell you first hand that the abuse of the pre-boarding is a MAJOR pet peeve for all of us. People know how to work the system and do so frequently.
All you have to do is say I need a certain seat or I have a disability and we are not allowed to question you or deny you.
As for the children being under 5 to pre board I personally think that is a bit to young. I have a 5 year old and if we got separated I would be highly upset. With all the wackos out there today I want my young child next to me only! Not to mention he would talk the persons ear off! Hee hee.
The aircraft swaps.
We do this rather frequently. Typically it's because the flight that has the original delay has a lot of passengers that would misconnect if we delayed them any further.
Trust me, a bunch of misconnects can be really tough to deal with! Especially in the afternoon and later. There are not always other flights to put them on
Sorry about your 45 minute delay! That's never fun! Glad you had your I-Pod and camera! I love both of mine
I am rarely caught without my I-pod, camera and pocket PC.
Glad you enjoyed your flight all in all and hope to see you back soon!
Hope parts of my replay make sense btw. I just woke up and have not yet gotten my first cup of coffee down

SWATPA- Tell me if this abusing the system. I often ask to pre-board (even tho I am 18) because I am hearing impaired. I would like to talk to the F/A before everyone else gets on board so i can let them know I am hearing impaired and that way if there is any emergency or something They can see where I am sitting before anyone else gets on board and they can come to me quickly and let me know of the emergency, since I cannot understand it well on the PA System as I would have to read lips. I continue to do this when I fly by myself on SWA and usually any airline. I hope this is ok with you guys if it isnt, I will stop, but I figured it would be easier and cause less confusion if I were to pre-board first.

Oh heavens no! That is certainly not abusing the system!
You have very valid reasons for needing to preboard!
I would give you a "blue sleeve" without a second thought
Your situation is one I run into rather frequently and completely understand the reasoning behind it. My mom is slightly hearing impaired herself and whenever she flies she is incredibly worried she will miss her flight (she has before) since she cant make out what they are saying on the announcements. She usually checks in with the agent like you, and asks if they could please inform her of any changes in gates or the like. Poor thing has sat at the gate alone once when they announced a gate change and did not hear it. Missed her flight. Another bunch of passengers for another flight immediately moved into her gate so she was none the wiser.
Anyway I am getting off topic. Please dont EVER feel you should not preboard!!!!!
The ones that abuse preboarding, we could create an entire new thread on that, plus I dont want to hijack Airbus3801's trip report here
