I booked this trip in May on Aeroplan points. I was traveling on my first flight alone to Kamloops to visit my grandfather.

AC Jazz Flight 8076
Jun. 30
Seat 6A
Dash 8-100 C-FABW

My mom drove me to the airport about 1:30hrs early for a 4:00 flight. We went to the AC Jazz check-in desks (which were deserted) and I was checked in by a very friendly Jazz agent. My mom and I then wet to the main section of the airport, which has improved greatly in the last few years. YYJ is now a joy to fly in and out of, while it used to be a nuisance. After waiting for a while I decided to go through security. Luckily I did not set off the alarm and passed through without a hitch. I went directly to my gate and sat down to wait for my flight. I watched a few departures including a Regional 1 flight to Kelowna. Unfortunately there were no jets at the terminal, due to a WestJet 737-700 being 2 hours late from Calgary. Finally around 1540 my Dash 8 arrived. It was C-FABW in the green AC Jazz colour scheme. Boarding started late around 1550 but I took advantage of pre-boarding. I was (kind of) greeted by a young, smile less FA. The inside of the aircraft was clean but showing some signs of age. The seats were a bluish-green colour and were comfortable but very firm. After taking my seat an older women sat down beside me, I was about to start a conversation with her, when she put on a pair of earplugs. The door closed at around 1600 and he bored looking FA started the safety demonstration while we were taxiing. We arrived at runway 27 and began our takeoff roll right away. After a quick takeoff, we were airborne. The rest of the flight was very uneventful. There was no in-flight service on this short hop except the FA handing out some hard candies. We made a rather rough landing at YVR about 5 minutes late. We taxied for a very long time and arrived at the gate a total of 15 minutes late. The pilot apologized for the delay over the PA but I could not understand a word he was saying, it seems that the PA was broken. I deplaned and was given a very nasty look from the FA. I quickly walked to the (same) gate for my next flight.

Dash 8-100 C-FABW Sad

As I waited for my next flight, I decided to go look at some planes. Among numerous Jazz Dash 8s I saw a A340-300, an A320 and an A319 (all AC). My gate was very crowded. The AC Jazz gates were quite nice, despite the ancient torn vinyl seats. Boarding commenced on time and I walked down the tunnel to the plane. As I walked out the door, I let out a sigh, C-FABW again. I would appreciate some variety AC! I boarded and was greeted this time by a very friendly FA. I looked down the aisle to my seat and noticed a very large man sitting in my seat! I walked down to him and politely told him that he was in my seat (usually I wouldn’t bother, but I really wanted the window. He looked at his boarding pass and began to stand up to switch seats, but hit his head very hard on the roof. I now felt guilty for asking him to move. I sat down in my seat and we were off. We taxied and then lined up for departure. While waiting the FA warned us that there would be some turbulence on this flight and that our cruising altitude would be 21,000 ft. Normally I don’t mind turbulence but more on that later. We had a similar takeoff roll to the one in YYJ. The first half of the flight was very uneventful with no turbulence whatsoever. Soon after takeoff the FA served juice cookies and sesame snacks, I sampled both. When the FA came around again, she let my have another orange juice. About 20 minutes into the flight, the fasten seatbelts sign came on and I think the captain said something but again I could not hear it. The FA sat down and we experienced some light turbulence for about ten minutes. Soon the seatbelt sign was turned off, just as we started our descent. The FA was going around collecting garbage when we suddenly hit some more powerful turbulence, she continued collecting garbage. Just after we broke through the clouds, there was a very sudden and powerful drop. The flight attendant fell over, people were screaming, clutching their seats. Profanities could be heard, especially from my seatmate, who again, hit his head on the roof. As the FA tried to hurry back to her seat, there were two more similar drops. The FA the yelled, (without the PA) “is everyone alright?” We continued our descent, which eventually became smoother, before I knew it we made a perfect landing at YKA. We began to deplane (my seatmate AGAIN hit his head on the roof) when the captain came out of the cockpit and explained that we had hit some air pockets. He and the flight attendant then personally apologized to everybody as we walked out the door. I then collected my bags and left.

Dash 8-300, switched to Dash 8-100 C-FABW Sad

I arrived at Fulton Field quite early. I checked in then waited for my flight. I was the only pax in the airport for quite a long time. I watched my plane come in and to my great disappointment I noticed that AC had changed the equiptment from a Dash 8 300 to a 100. On closer look, I noticed that I would be flying C-FABW again. I was very dissatisfied. I cleared security and noticed that there were only 16 passengers at the gate (less that 50% capacity of the 100). We boarded and I got seated, seat 2C remained empty. The flight attendant on this flight looked very tired and bored, much like the FA on the first leg. The doors closed early and after a brief taxi and safety demonstration, we lined up at the runway. The takeoff roll was nothing like the other two flights. We accelerated down the runway with amazing force, yet we used the entire strip. There were very heavy crosswinds, but the pilots did an excellent job of keeping the aircraft stable. We ascended to our cruising altitude of 20,000ft. This was a typical flight with the snacks being exactly the same as on the first. We started our descent into Vancouver and made a good landing. The taxi to the gate was short this time. I walked to the gate and sat down for my next flight.

Dash 8 –100

Boarding for the short hop to YYJ was on time and I was the first person to board the aircraft. I was on another Dash 8-100 but thankfully not FABW. This aircraft was in the orange Jazz scheme but I did not catch the reg. The FA greeted us at the door. The aircraft was not quite full but there were four AC pilots on the flight that got a ride to YYJ. This flight was again uneventful; we took off with a very weak takeoff roll, and were at our cruising altitude of 4500ft. in no time. When about to land at YYJ, we did a series of manoeuvres that offered great night time views of Victoria and Vancouver. We touched down early at YYJ, the pilots used a lot of brake and reverse thrust when landing. We deplaned and walked by a sparkling WestJet 737-700 with winglets. I walked to the terminal and collected my bags.

AC Jazz Ratings:
Ground Staff: 10/10 always friendly and efficient.
FA’s: 6/10 two of the FA’s were cheerful and talkative while the others acted like they hated their jobs.
Aircrafts: 3/10 got C-FABW three times with PA system not working, seats were too hard.
In-flight Service: 8/10 sufficient for these short hops but did not offer pop.

I hope you enjoyed my trip report on these short flights, this is my first report, but I hope to write more in the future!

Great report . . .

Sounds like that poor guy next to you would have learned after hitting his head twice to be careful . . .

Sounds like an exciting trip. FYI - Regional 1 Airlines now offers non-stop service between Victoria and Kamloops.
