UA5664 ORD-PIT BAe146 July 9th 2005 11.10 -> 13.39

STD: 1110
ATD: 1145
STA: 1339
ATA: 1356

Hey everybody! I woke up around 7.55a, got in the shower then got ready to go. I found out that our plane was leaving 30 minutes late and our new arrival time would be 2.09p. But I never told my mom as I wanted to get to the airport as soon as possible! We left the house at 8.55 and we exited 294 at the O’Hare Exit at 9.16. We got out at the United concourse T1 and said goodbye to my dad. My brother had to save his gameboy game so that’s when I asked wanna go to Germany? to my mom and she said no. We stood in line and that’s when I told her that our plane was 30 minutes late. She wasn’t thrilled but oh well. We stood in line for a little bit then checked it. Our 4 bags were tagged as UA5664 to PIT and then we went to security. None of us had to take off our shoes or at least I don’t think so.

After security, we walked to Terminal 2 and that’s when my sister and I spotted a Starbucks. I told my mom that my sister Annie and I were gonna get Starbucks and you can head to the gate. She said it was ok so my sister and I joined the line. I ordered at Grande Caramel Frap with extra caramel and my sister ordered the Grande Vanilla Bean Frap. I paid with my gift certificate and then went off to the gate as I saw my mom and brother, Peter at Mickey D’s. I stood there with my sister waiting for my mom and brother. Then I told a little kid to get out of the way so he wouldn’t get hit by a big cart.

I walked off gate F4 and watched many things happen. There was a flight Jacksonville that was supposed to leave soon but it was slightly because of a late arrival but the pilot requested services for the aircraft. They had to hook it up to power and stuff. It took them a while to get the aircraft ready. They boarded that flight but then they got sent back up because the pilot said that he didn’t have power but he said that on the radio. Eventually they boarded a few minutes before we did.

I found out our flight was delayed due to an airshow in Pittsburgh. We boarded N601AW at 11.30 and I sat in 6C which is right next to the engines. It was my first time in an Avro RJ. The pilot came on and said that it would be a quick flight of 1 hour 3 minutes. The weather in Pittsburgh was 10 miles vis. Scattered clouds, 74ºF and wind from the NW at 5 mph.

http://img311.echo.cx/img311/209/p70900020gb.jpg

The gate was retracted at 11.44 and we pushed back a minute later. We taxied to 4R via F4, A12, B, E, 4L. We took off at 11.56 and flew over the northern suburbs. Since my house is over the 22L/R path my sister and I looked for our house and school. We didn’t see it. Oh well. After takeoff, we turned to the right.

The pilot came on at FL180 and said that we’re over South Bend, IN and we’re climbing to FL270. We will be flying over Southern Michigan, Southern Detroit, Akron, and then into Pittsburgh. We had some light chop after takeoff and soon, we started descending around 1.35p EST. The pilot came on again and said that we were 68 miles away and we were passing FL220 and the wind was from the NNW at 10, 10 mi visibility, Scattered Clouds, 79ºF and in around 15 minutes, we’d be on the ground. He also told us to expect some chop while descending into Pittsburgh.

As we descended through the clouds, the plane dropped a little bit like a rollercoaster. Annie thought the plane was going down so she grabbed my hand hard as I was writing too. Annie also decided to put on makeup while we were going through clouds. It wasn’t a smart thing to do.

The gear came down at 1.54 and we landed on 28L at 1.56. We exited at B5, B, C4, D Concourse, C Concourse, C51. We got to C51 at 2.01p.

UA5665 PIT-ORD BAe146 July 14th 2005 14.39 -> 15.20

Good Day everyone. After getting to bed at 5.00a and a failed attempt to pull an all nighter with friends, I woke up 3 hours later and did some final packing. We left the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown around 10.00 and got to the airport at 12.30p. We returned our car and went to go check in. Our friends checked in at Continental back to EWR and we checked in with United back to Chicago. As we stood in line, nobody moved, so Mom spoke up and asked if anyone is checking in domestically to move up. We eventually got to cut the line and check in. Our 3 bags (minus my sister) was checked to ORD on UA5665. There was a family going to DEL (Delhi) via Toronto, Los Angeles and somewhere else. They had 10 bags as I heard correctly.

We went to security and it was recommended that I take off my shoes. My brother didn’t have to take my shoes off but my friend and I did. We went to go eat lunch at Mickey D’s while the adults got something else. I saw and AA MD80 pushback for DFW and an WN 737 with winglets come in from MDW I presume.

We go to C51 for our plane back to Chicago. Our aircraft, N607AW arrived at 1.45p. The flight was full with 84 passengers. I boarded the aircraft at 2.20p and it was a different aircraft as I was closer to the wings and the engine. I sat in 6C.

http://img311.echo.cx/img311/9665/p71400511la.jpg

The flight back was 1 hour 5 minutes. The weather was hazy, 84ºF and there was no delays. We pushback at 2.37 and we taxi to 10C via C51, D2, E,W, 10C. We took off at 2.44 and then we turned to about 160º and turned for Chicago. I think we were flying really fast or it seemed like that because we were flying through clouds most of the time.

You really couldn’t see the ground until we were near O’Hare. The seatbelt sign was never turned off nor did we ever hear from the captain until “Flight attendants, please be seated for landing.” We start descending at about 2.15p CST but I’m not too sure as we slowed down then sped up climbed a little bit but at 2.30 I confirmed that we started our descent. At 2.34, the engines spooled down and we descended. It felt like a steep descent. We had some light chop but nothing other than that.

I see that we passed MDW and then we had some gate information. There was a lot of people going to Munich on our flight. Our gate today would be E2A. The gear came down at 2.55p and we landed on RW 4R ad 2.57. We exit at Q and taxi to E2A via Q, D, D1, B, A,H, Terminal 1 B ramp, E2A. We got to gate E2A at 3.10p and we then walked to T1 United baggage claim 11. and then at 3.50, our bags come out, and we call a cab and arrive home at 4.15p.

Thanks for reading this trip report! I hope you have enjoyed reading this as much as I had writing it! All comments are appreciated.

Great report with one exception I believe . . .

Sit in a different seat next time - you have about twenty shots of the engine nacelle of a BAe 146 . . .  biggrin

Great report...

Looks like you got a nice shot of the airshow on your approach to PIT.

Do you have any pics of the interior of the aircraft? Also, what is the express terminal like at ORD? I have only been in the main UA terminal. I am flying this flight later this month, and I'm just curious.

No Sorry. I dont have a pic of the interior. The Express Terminal is a disaster. Its small and cramped. E2A has the United Easy Info but everything else doesnt.

The seating is 2-3.

here are some more pics which i have forgotten to upload. I have drawn the lines of my routes to the taxiways:

Good report -- it's cool to hear about someone flying through ORD on the same morning I did.

Did the TSA require you to take your shoes off? On my recent travels, I hadn't noticed them asking people to take their shoes off. I was under the impression that it is now only voluntary.

Another question: your boarding passes show seat 5C, yet you said you sat in 6C... which is correct?

It's funny when I tell people I love planes and they think I'm weird.

PIT's TSA is tough, so they just suggest you take them off, before you go through, so you don't have to be screened again...It takes forever at times to get through security at PIT, because they are so strict about things.

Since I can't read properly, i was told that i wasnt on N601AW as that is an America West A320 but on N611AW.

Since i can't read properly... someone told me that N601AW is America West... so I would of been on N611AW not N601AW.

it wasnt required to but it was recommended that i took them off so i did it.

Out of T1, on Ted flight 1518 to MCO, a 6:50am departure so I missed you by about 3 hours!

Good TR, I liked the vantage point from the BAE-146 engines in the pictures.

Is that the site where the old terminal used to be at PIT?

It looks like it could be, but I can't say for certain.

Also, do you have any pics of the terminals? Either PIT or ORD, (moreso ORD..) I want to see how bad T2 really is, before seeing it for myself.

no i dont have anymore pics...what flight r u flying? if ur flying to PIT, its a BAE146 and you'd most likely depart out of T2 gate F4 - (good luck finding a seat) anything else... you'll need to walk down stairs and board the aircraft from there. when do u fly out of T2?

T2 IS A $hithole.

The BAE was comfy... but thats coming from someone who's short and skinny... the flight crew is fine... they're quiet... only come out for drinks and some other things before the short flight is over.

Btw, N601AW is a BAe 146-300, seating 100... your return trip was on a -200.. that's why Row 6 was in a diff 'position' in comparison to the motors...

how'd you like the landings?  Smile
