Flight no: DN 606
Date: July 16th 2005
Departure: 14.20
Aircraft: Airbus A320
Reg: VT-ADY
I have moved to Bangalore on an one year contract. 17th July happens to be my girl friend's birthday. I have always been with her on her birthday ever since our courtship began. This year had to be no exception so I decided to fly down to Mumbai to be with her. A quick search revealed that Air Deccan was offering the cheapest fare on this sector. Rs. 1971.00 (US$ 46.00 approx.)
The flight was to depart at 14.20 and I was busy taking interviews up to 13.00. Cunningham Road is quite some distance from the airport. I had to request a colleague to drop to the airport on his motor cycle. A car would simply not have been able to negotiate to Bangalore traffic and reach on time for check in.
I managed to reach the airport at 13.45, checked in and was handed was given a boarding card with seat number 15F printed on the part of the boarding card which is collected by the airline at the time of boarding and a sticker bearing no. 25A on the boarding card. When I asked the guy at the counter the reason for this, he just smiled and said that it was a computer error. I had no hassles as long as it was a window seat.
The security check was quick as I had no baggage at all. The lounge was quite small. On the outside I could see an IC Airbus A320, 9W ATR 42, AI Airbus A310 and a DN ATR42. Moments later the A320 of DN, VT-ADY moved into gate 3. This is the one with the Sun Microsystems logo. This is one of the two gates with jetways at BLR. When the boarding started, we did not board to the jetway but were asked to board from the rear door. That's very strange. On board, I found that my seat was already occupied by a young girl. I assumed that she might have wanted to take the window seat. I casually asked her her seat number. She replied that it was 25A. I questioned the FA about it but she had no answer. The FA asked me to take any vacant seat so I took the seat 25C next to the girl's mum.
The take off was slightly delayed because of a test flight of the LCA. Good for me that I managed to see both the prototypes that day. Sorry no photographs. I did not have my camera with me.
The inflight service commenced after the seat belt signs were switched off. We had an option of Lays, Vegetable rolls, brownies, a variety of juices and mineral water. All priced at 3 times their usual sales price. I purchased a Lays and vegetable roll for Rs.75.00.
Due to decent tail wind, we managed to land at Mumbai on time.

Quoting Karan69 (Reply 1): Nice one mate, how did the meeting go with your future relatives.
It was actually fixed for Tuesday but she wanted it rescheduled for today. It went off quite well, her mom was quite shocked, she had not told her mom about our relationship. Anyways they will be visiting my place on Friday to meet my family. I'll be in Mumbai upto Sunday.

Himmat01,
Could you kindly comment on the inflight service/cabin crew; also compare the flight experience with other Indian carriers? Would you fly this carrier again? This would be of great help to those wondering if they should give Deccan a shot.

The inflight service is average. Comes nowhere near 9W,IC,S2 or IT(Kingfisher Airlines). I would fly it again just for the low fares.

Well now Jet Airways cheapest Check fares (capacity controlled but no APEX restrictions) start at Rs 2415 (inclusive of the Rs 221 tax) on all its flights on the Mumbai Bangalore sector and you may get it at short notice if the flight is not doing filling up as expected. So think -for Rs 500 less is it worth flying DN? And remember of the Rs 500 savings you blew 75 on on the snacks alone!
Similar fares for Indian Airlines (called Easy Fares) starts from Rs 2721 (inclusive of tax) while Air Sahara (Solar fares) is from Rs 2222 while Kignfisher like Jet starts from Rs 2415!
So is DN such a big bargain????
To sum it up : Lowest fares are no longer synonymous with Air Deccan. A smart traveller can travel in style on any carrier at fares not much higher than DN. All you need is to
1 BE AWARE OF THE LOW FARE LEVELS - All the airline websites give the fare tables and
2 BE PERSISTENT esp if you are dealing through a travel agent - some travel agents (not all) knowingly or unknowingly "forget" about some low fares and may need some prodding to refresh their memory!

I don't think that taking pictures at Bangalore airport is allowed since it is a government airport. I had the FAs tell me that during their pre flight announcement. Photography is now allowed at all Indian airports except the ones which are military/shared airports. I think that the Bangalore is the HAL aiport..or am I wrong?

Is there any private airport In India ?

Previously it was not allowed at all airports. But now its not allowed at airports which are shared by the defence, other such eg which I know of is GOI which is owned by the navy. B'lore is the HAL airport.
Himmat lets know how it went with ur in laws. All the best.

Yes there is. Cochin ! AAI does not run this airport - it only provides the ATC facilities. The airport management as well as all commercial actiivites are controlled by a company called Cochin International Airport Limited which has Government of Kerala as well as a lot of private individual investors (mostly Malayalis settled in the ME) as share holders.
While on the topic - it also is I think the ONLY aiport in India with live flight information! I personally find it very useful to find out the happenings in Mumbai airport nowadays as the airport handles on an average five daily flights to BOM!
