This is the report of my Round the World trip that I started in May. The report is extremely detailed with lots of pictures, so instead of playing hours with the scripts here, it is posted on my own website. It took a while to type that and work on the pictures, hope you enjoy.

The first part deals with BA/CX business class from Helsinki to Bangkok via London, Toronto, Anchorage, Hong Kong and Manila.

Please click on the images to enlarge (will open in new window), and post your comments here.

Lari, man you did it again. What a fantastic report. I enjoyed every bit of it.

With regards to the T4 lounge in LHR, I find it to be the best one so far for Europe, maybe even in the world (haven't been to HKG yet) from the limited lounges I've been to.

I totally agree with you that the Westin in Pasay is a dump. Your better of staying at Shangrila or the other hotels in Makati.

Well keep em coming.

December... Oh well. I think they pushed back the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi opening again as well.

Quoting QANTAS077 (Reply 3):

11h20min. The total time from YYZ to HKG is 19h20min.

Yes definitely the best in Europe hands down - apart from the new LH F terminal and lounges I guess. But those CX lounges are still much nicer.

Quoting KL808 (Reply 5):

I can't believe these chains keeping the awful hotels. Hyatt Regency or the Westin... come on. I think we'll stay at the new Hyatt next time again in Malate.

I finally got two award bookings ticketed:

20OCT HEL-FRA LH C
20OCT FRA-SIN SQ F
22OCT SIN-MNL SQ F
23OCT MNL-SIN SQ F
11MAR SIN-FRA SQ F
11MAR FRA-HEL LH C

Decided to do MNL due to longer flights and just buy a cheap ticket SIN-BKK-SIN.

14MAY BKK-SIN CX C
14MAY SIN-SYD BA F
15MAY SYD-PPT TN F
15MAY PPT-IPC LA C
17MAY IPC-PPT LA C
18MAY PPT-AKL TN F
19MAY AKL-SYD QF Y
19MAY SYD-HKG CX C
20MAY HKG-BKK CX F

So I finally get to try the Wing/Pier F sections in May.

Regards,

Lari

wow, amazing. I've been saving my AA miles to do a LAX-LIM-SCL-IPC-PPT-SYD-LAX in C.

Can't wait to read your trip report on this one.

BTW, is this an Oneworld Circle Pacific award?

SO your gonna be in IPC for 2 days?
I heard that's more than enough.

Good luck with your routing... It was a nightmare to get mine ticketed to say the least. No stopover allowed and they try to enforce max 6h connections. Also, beware that TN can't be used on Oneworld awards (those are MUCH more flexible). I got tired of the AA crap and took the CX C leg back home. They just would NOT accept a 16 hour conenction in SYD to take the BA F flight. Even offered me QF in Y... While I'm happy to get this award, the new AA routing/stopover rules suck big time.

I'll be in IPC roughly 3 days and 2 nights - thankfully LAN has great availability even though the IPC flight is only twice weekly.

Lari

thanks. So now IM a bit worried. PPT-AKL/SYD is served by QF but as a codeshared flight on TN,so this is not gonna work then huh?

On those Oneworld awards, is stop over allowed? How did you get your stop overs then?

Drew

Yes, QF has C and Y inventory available on the TN flights. But I don't think you can use it on the Oneworld awards.

Quote:
The oneworld multi-carrier awards are valid on American Airlines, Aer Lingus, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, Iberia, LAN4 and Qantas Airways

On regular mixed carrier awards, there is no way to include all the destinations in one award. Oneworld awards allow unlimited stopovers (max 16 segments).

My problem with AAdvantage is that usually one stopover is allowed, and less than 24h is a connection. AAdvantage now allows no stopover unless North America is included, and tries to push 6h connections. I got more than 6h in PPT/SYD/HKG but less than 24h.

Here are some of the rules that apply to MIXED CARRIER AWARDS.

Quote:

North America To/from Other Regions:
A stopover in the Caribbean/Mexico is not allowed. Exception: Travel to/from Mexico; a stopover is allowed within Mexico.
In addition to the final destination, one stopover is allowed at the North American Gateway on the outbound or return, not both.
In addition, one stopover is allowed at the first International Gateway on the outbound or the last International Gateway on the return, not both.

Travel Between or Within All Other Regions:
No stopovers are allowed.

Travel to/from Fiji/Papeete cannot be via Australia/New Zealand.
Travel to Easter Island (IPC) must be via Papeete (PPT) or use two awards.

Passenger has 6 hours to connect. If there are no scheduled flights within 6 hours, regardless of availability, the passenger must take the next scheduled flight but, may not exceed 24 hours.
A connection with more than 24 hours will be considered a stopover.

When selling seats for through flights and the desired inventory is not available, you cannot opt to sell the flight point-to-point. If sold point-to-point, the error response MULTIPLE SEGMENTS FOR SAME FLIGHT - SELL AS ONE SEGMENT will be received, indicating this booking is not allowed. Overriding the error check by ending the PNR twice is not acceptable.

Thanks for a superb report!

I definitely agree that food on YYZ(-ANC)-HKG is relatively lacking... snacks often ran out in both classes, and the same case for the return to YYZ. Therefore, I stop flying YYZ route for a couple of years. It is unacceptable that snacks ran out. But I guess due to various security rules in ANC, there will be no additional catering at ANC for the time coming. We can only hope that CX will finally fly HKG-YYZ nonstop.

Excellent trip report as usual. Glad to see CX is still a great airline to fly. Everytime I board a NW/CO aircraft you have no idea how I yearn for quality service.

I notice you are going to the dark side!  Wink SQ F huh? LOL I can think of worse.

I am eagerly waiting on the Emirates trip report of yours. I really want to see if you thought the same about them as I did.

Enjoyable report. Why does CX need to stop in ANC? Is it due to range? I'm just a bit surprised - if UA, once-upon-a-time, could fly JFK-HKG with no stops, why does CX need to stop in ANC?

And flying business and first class everywhere - you are one lucky guy.

Qantas077 - those are incredible pics

I think the A340-300 does not have sufficient range to make it non-stop.

I think that was on a B747-400 and was penalized heavily.

Hey Lari,

Another fantastic report about an unusual routing, only very few people fly from Europe to Asia via America.

I agree that CX could cater the plane in ANC so that they can offer enough food on the long flight to HKG, a bit dissapointing that they run out of snacks and drinks, especially in Business Class they should have everything available during the whole flight.

I can't wait for the other reports, Tahiti and Easter Island sounds very exotic, make sure that you take many pictures!

By the way, there was a small bug, I couldn't see the small pictures in your report. I had to hover over the page and when my mouse pointer changed from an arrow to a hand I had to click, then the large version of the picture opened in another window.

Hmmm... interesting. It seems to work for me, and I had a friend testing it as well. I made the pages with MS Word, and funnily for me, the small pictures are displayed, and I only see an arrow - not the usual hand as the pointer.

Anybody had the same problem?

I'll try to finish the EK report now.

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 6):
Yes definitely the best in Europe hands down - apart from the new LH F terminal and lounges I guess. But those CX lounges are still much nicer.

There are a couple of Terraces lounges in Terminal 4. The one at Gate 1a/1c is on two levels and is usually where shorthaul passengers are directed. The other is in the Lounge Pavilion opposite Gate 10. This has the Concorde Room on the entrance level with the First lounge and Molton Brown Spa on the ground floor and a smaller Terraces lounge on the upstairs floor.

You can see some of the photos here, here and here. Password and username flyertalk

Having said that you didn't miss much, except the Molton Brown Spa. The one in T4 Arrivals isn't exactly a spa or a full oil massage. You sit in a weird chair contraption thing, although it does feel good after an overnight flight.

A couple of other little things.....the reason why the BA A320 seatmap shows a majority of the cabin in 2-3 config is because all but a couple of the rows can convert in Club Europe. In reality it is rare that it goes back so far....except on the way to CDG on a Monday morning! Also hold onto that BA priority tag...those things are like gold dust, a little like BA's idea of priority handling  Sad

I was actually wondering why it starts with row 2 - at least this plane had row 1 as that's where I sat.

Oops...must learn to read. I don't know the answer to that question! On the 767 the window seats start in row 2, but haven't a clue why that seatmap has that on it. Probably just an error, the 747 First cabin has errors with reference to seat numbers too...
