I picked up a cab at the corner of 59th and Park on Manhattan, and after a pretty quick trip across the Queensboro Bridge and through Queens, I arrived at LGA at about 1130. I had checked in online the night before, but while looking through My Itineraries, I had noticed that my trip from Greensboro up to Manchester NH had become quite screwed up. Delta has discontinued service between LGA and MHT, and I just happened to be booked on this flight, as if afforded me to leave GSO after work and make it into New Hampshire at a reasonable hour (1030 pm or so). Alas, I had to get this routing changed through ATL now, with a departure 6 minutes before but getting into MHT after midnight. At least I get an extra 452 MQMs for this. My return had me getting into ATL after my departure (clearly a problem), so they put me on the late night ATL-GSO flight…again, getting home later than I would have liked, but oh well.

I head to the check in counter and after trying to explain to the agent that (a) I was not using SkyMiles for my ticket (it was a U14NBV fare and I pulled up my confirmation on my laptop to show her I paid $153 for that ticket) and then trying to explain that LGA-MHT did not exist as of 03SEP (she was saying how she had just worked that flight the previous day…well, the previous day isn’t September 3…), I finally got it sorted out.

I quickly cleared security, which is pretty easy at the Marine Terminal. I grabbed a few newspapers (the magazine racks were quite diminished from when I lived in Boston) and waited for my flight. The gate agent got on the PA and said that there was a minor mechanical problem that they were fixing and that boarding would be delayed, but we would push back on time and if needed we would use N223DN at Gate SH2 to go up to BOS. After about 2-3 minutes, boarding started and I took Seat 11F, right behind the exit row. I had anticipated doing some photos for this report, but alas, my battery had died while up in Vermont a few days before. We push back a couple of minutes late, where we do the safety spiel. Of course, of greater interest to me were a Continental 737-700 with winglets (my first CO -700 with winglets; I’ve seen a few -800s with them) and also my first Spirit A319 (ended up seeing 2 of them that day, ships 503 and 506). Anyway, after a couple of minutes, the captain gets on the PA saying our minor mechanical problem became a major one, that the relief plane had gone mechanical, that our flight was cancelled and we were all on the 130 shuttle. They said we would just stay on the plane for right now so we could board before the 130 shuttle passengers, which irritated some people but they didn’t make us go standby and we got pre-boarding, which I’ll take.

At about 1255, we deplaned, walked down to Gate SH1 where our names were checked off a list and we were permitted to board.

I once again took seat 11F, and the plane filled up pretty quickly - the load on this combined shuttle was about 70%. We pushed back again, and on the taxi out I saw a Champions Air 727 – only my second Champions Air 727 to get into my logbook. We taxied out to Runway 13, where we sat. And we waited. For a good 45 minutes. Welcome to midday at LaGuardia – where there are too many planes and too little opportunities. Not that I’m complaining. Saw another Spirit A319, an Air Canada A319, plenty of US Airways props and RJs, a few Comair CRJs, a Delta 737-800 and 767-200, a bunch of Eagle ERJs, and other typical LGA traffic. After sitting for about 45 minutes, we finally launched into the air.

Our altitude today was FL190, with a flight time of 42 minutes. Our route took us along the Connecticut shore, over New Haven, Groton and Providence, up to Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod and into Boston.

Service today was standard Delta Shuttle service. At altitude, drinks were provided, with me opting for a Coke (just a cup; I didn’t ask for the can since by the time they got to me we had 15 minutes left in the flight). A snack was also offered consisting of a salad, some cold chicken breasts and a Kit Kat bar. The chicken was nothing special – wasn’t the greatest, but I’ve had a lot worse chicken.

We touched down late on Runway 27 at BOS, coming in over Winthrop. Today at BOS had a Lufthansa 747-400 subbing for the daily A340; the only other visitor of note was N350US – one of the US Airways 737-300s in the usairways.com livery.

We taxied into Gate A1, where we were given the option of deplaning through the front or back. I chose the front as I wanted to hang out past security for a while; the back meant an exit by baggage claim in the public area.

After landing, I headed over to the Satellite Terminal to have lunch at Jasper White’s – wasn’t as good as I had hoped, but still, I got a great view of planes taking off on Runway 22R/L. Nothing special for Delta there today, only a few Song 757s, a 737-200, 737-800, 767-300 and a few Comair CRJs; US Airways had a bunch of A319/A321 and the aforementioned 737 on the ramp.

Overall, not a bad trip. Delta handled the cancellation of DL1920 well, keeping us informed and letting us have priority boarding on DL1922. And, of course, as a spotter, the fact that I got an extra hour to spot at LGA, not to mention getting into BOS at a better time for movements there, was fine by me. Overall, decent service overall - my only complaint would have to be the lack of knowledge shown by the ticket agents at LGA (I'd just like to thank DeltaMIA for having confirmed the cancellation of MHT-LGA on a previous thread in CivAv...if only other Delta employees could be as knowledgable about schedule changes as he is...)

I'm pretty sure the MX problem was with one of the engines...when we pushed back initially, we had tried to start the engines, but that wasn't working. I also vaguely recall them saying something like that in the gate area, but I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the announcements, as I was trying to make a phone call prior to boarding.
