I decided I want to go do some shopping in Hong Kong, and my girlfriend also needed a visa run, so EK flights were booked at their temporary ticketing office on Asoke/Sukhumvit 21. I had Kenya Airways booked, but since EK would earn me United Mileage Plus miles, it was worth the slight surcharge or so I thought. Apparently EK doesn’t do advance seat assignments in economy, or so the agent said. She issued paper tickets despite the route being E-ticketing eligible.

Checking the Emirates website in the morning, the inbound from Dubai was expected to arrive just a few minutes late instead of 3 and 1 hours late on August 3 and 4. A taxi to Don Muang was quick from Rama 4 as usual, and thankfully the queues weren’t long at all at the EK counters. I can only imagine what they could have been with all 434 passengers there. The two-class 777-300 is a true cattle truck, seating 49C and 385Y passengers.

The Thai Airways agent was very friendly, gave us exit row seats as requested, and confirmed that our UA numbers were in the booking. We then quickly cleared immigration, and headed to the very basic Lufthansa Business Lounge for some snacks and drinks. They have only chips and cookies, as well as a small selection of drinks. I had a few shots of JW Black Label.

Boarding was from gate 46, not too far from the LH lounge. Activity at Don Muang was the usual afternoon traffic from Europe, including AY MD11 and KLM 747 at the nearby gates. Boarding time came and went, no announcements whatsoever were made. Finally, about five minutes before the scheduled departure time, the agent announced “Emirates to Hong Kong now boarding”. How about trying to board a 434 seat plane in some kind of an order? Funnily enough, Garuda and PAL, who don’t have the greatest reputation, were doing just this at the nearby gates and were on time as well. PAL had sent an A340 to Bangkok today.

We took our seats in the exit row – the aisle seat was occupied already and a guy was praying on top of a blanket in front of the door. I needed to use the toilet – one of them was in a horrible shape with some liquid and tissue on the floor. An announcement was made that we will be delayed due to late arrival and technical problems. Hot towels and menus were distributed – nobody bothered to smile at all. Yet, I was impressed to get a menu. The flight was maybe 60-70% full in cattle class. Despite having 3-4-3 configuration, the seats were ok compared to Thai’s 10-abreast config. However, 9-abreast is obviously much better, and I don’t understand an airline claiming to be world class putting 10 abreast seating to its 777 fleet.

We finally pushed back after a 35-minute delay, and taxied to runway 21R for departure. Nose camera was switched on for the takeoff. We rolled for an eternity, and seemed to use most of the runway before finally lifting off for the short hop to Hong Kong. Meals were quickly distributed once the seatbelt sign went off, and I was glad to see proper sized trays still used. I chose the fish main course, and it was great as was the rest. One of the best economy class meals for sure. However, the roll was cold and rock hard, drinks were served only once, and the crew attitude left a lot to be desired. My girlfriend’s request for a cup of tea was met by a rather rude “later”. It indeed came about an hour later.

I ordered a Tia Maria on the rocks after the meal – it was listed on the bar service part of the menu. It never came, despite pressing the attendant call button six times. A few F/As passed by as well, nobody bothered to stop by although the light was on. Actually, the bar service part is waste of paper on the menu as a proper drink service was never offered. The purser announced that duty free is available on this flight – so I finally stopped a flight attendant as I wanted to buy something. Her rude reply was “I don’t think we have time” and she then disappeared. Airshow did not work on this flight – nothing on the PTVs, and other screens displayed a white screen with AIRSHOW on it.

I then snapped a picture of the cabin, and used the toilet. By this time, also the second toilet was in dismal shape – I couldn’t help taking a picture as I had my camera with me. All world class Asian airlines clean their toilets in flight. Litter from the trays was all over the aisles, nobody bothered to collect that. The crew had disappeared at this point, and later took their jumpseats for landing. Particularly the flight attendants in our section of the cattle truck had this “we couldn’t care less” attitude.

We landed late on runway 07L, and taxied to gate 66 for disembarkation. I grabbed a business class menu on the way out – it looked just like economy with an added shrimp appetizer. Business seemed to have very tight legroom and rather old style seats. A thank you to the crew was met by a blank stare, and we then quickly cleared immigration and took the Airport Express to Hong Kong Island.

JW Marriott Hong Kong

Took a taxi to the hotel from the AEL station as we didn’t want to wait for the free shuttle. Traffic was bad, and the journey took about 20 minutes. An upgrade to executive floor was provided as usual, and we were escorted to our room on the 34th floor. Nice if a bit small typical Marriott room, with all the amenities you would expect from their flagship Asia-Pacific property. The lounge had excellent snacks in the evening, and the breakfast wasn’t bad either. They let us take a shower and change at the health club before heading to the airport on the second day. Very nice health club – Bvlgari toiletries were provided for example.

After a refreshing shower at the Marriott, we took a taxi to the Airport Express station and went to the Emirates check-in desk. The agent first made a big fuss about the one way tickets to Bangkok – she was within her rights to do so but this has never ever happened to me on flights to Thailand. She then commented that our small cabin bag and the Marriott shopping bags were too much, and that the roller bag must be checked in. “It is too heavy as well”. It was 10kg, and EK allows you a ryanairesque 7kg. Worth noting that Tiger Airways, Air Asia, Thai Air Asia, Jetstar Asia and Orient Thai have never made me check this exact same bag. I was getting extremely pissed off at this point.

We were at check in 2.5 hours before departure, and she could not assign any exit row or front cabin seats. “You’re lucky if I can seat you together!” Now, somebody explain to me if EK offers no advance seat selection, and we were 133 and 134 to check in, how the hell is it possible only shitty seats in row 38 are available when economy seats 385?

The ride to Chek Lap Kok was fast and comfortable as usual, and I enquired at the check in if she could assign us better seats. The agent looked at me with this “Why the hell do you stand there with boarding passes” look on her face. Reply to my mopite request was “no, full”. Even the cheapest of the Asian low cost carriers would say “I’m sorry sir, the flight is full”. Passport control and security check was fast, and we made the awfully long trek to gate 66. I bought a tube of Pringles at the Watson’s and wondered why on the earth we are flying on this airline instead of TG/CX whilst staring at The Pier CX Lounge entrance.

Boarding started 60 minutes before departure, and we made our way to the back of the long Triple Seven. Even with this, doors were closed 75 minutes later – i.e. 15 minutes late. Menus and hot towels were offered, and we pushed back for the 2h10minute flight to the Thai capital. Takeoff from runway 25L was extremely long again, and the plane was full in both classes. I had trouble seeing any quality image from my PTV as the brightness control had gone crazy. Headphones didn’t work. Nothing in the ridiculously thick entertainment guide matched what the system had. Same thing on A6-EMP.

We had fish for the meal again, same high quality as from Bangkok. Drinks were not offered until I asked the guy “could we please have some drinks?” “Yes, what do you want?” was the reply. Obviously I was seriously delaying his service. No refills whatsoever were offered. Crew decided to skip coffee/tea service in our section. I asked for another small bottle of wine, and this f/a with seemingly nasty attitude said “You see I need to really collect the trays? Maybe later!” Never mind that the galley was 2 meters away with the guy working there. She later literally threw a bottle of white whine to me…

We landed a few minutes late at Don Muang, and used a gate at Pier 5. Immigration had horrendous lines, but thankfully the “Thai Residents” line had only one family ahead of us. Picked up our bag and took a taxi home.

Service on both flights was absolutely appalling. Way below what I expect from low cost airlines in Asia, let alone from a quality airline. It doesn’t matter to me if EK wastes money on these 600-page timetables, 200-page duty free magazines, and plastic name tags for bags or what. Their service made the trip miserable. From Hong Kong check-in agents to cabin crew. If HKG ground staff is not EK’s own, the airline should monitor their service levels and switch to CX or whoever if they can’t act professionally. Everybody acted like they did a huge favor when providing service.

I’m not in a hurry to board an Emirates plane again.

I heared more often lately about Emirates overworked, underpaid and undertrained staff, hope feedback will be a wake up call for them. I flew Emirates 2 years ago and the crew was very friendly and fun, even while rushing a meal service on a 45 minutes flight DXB-MCT. At least your meals apperently were nice, you don't get these on a 2-2,5 hr flight in the US or Europe, and neither on AirAsia or Tiger Air (which gave me a hard time on my 17 kg check in bag, so I took a coat and some books out as my carry on to get it below 15 kg).


nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Great report. Even living in the USA, where our expectations of air travel have dropped considerably in the past few years, I was appaled at the descriptions in your report. It sounded almost as if they were doing it on purpose...slacking on the job for a pay raise or because of all the pressure from management lately. How do they expect to fill all of those A380's with service like that? But I guess if the price is right...

I do agree Emirates service is falling way behind. On my recent flight from Dubai-Karachi on a 777-200 again the crew were very rude, arrogant and never smiled at all throughout the flight.

The thing that took the biscuit the most was when the passengers in the last few rows of the cabin were informed that they would not be getting a meal because the plane was nearing to descend. Had they not be arsing around in the galley, maybe they could have served everyone !!!

Last week I was on a small A.net meeting at DUS and two of us picked up the EK timetable from their counter, Frank (Leskova) immediately said that their timetable is looking more like a book than like a normal airline timetable. You are correct, maybe they should stop spending tons of money for making things like timetables, inflight-magazines and similar promotion stuff looking superior and invest a little bit more in service and correct flight attendant training/behavior.

It can definitely not be that they didn't serve you a drink with the excuse that they are busy with collecting the trays despite the galley was a meter or so away. Furthermore is it not acceptable that you pressed the F/A call button six (!!!) times but nobody cared.

So should we call Emirates the Lufthansa of the Middle East now?  Wink

By the way, did you change from Miles&Less to Mileage Plus or do you aditionally collect Star miles via Mileage Plus?

Thanks for the report, even when the trip sucked! Great to read about this, otherwise I would still think that EK belongs to the "elite airlines" even in Economy Class.

For exactly this reason, coffee/tea was not served in our section. On a 2h10min flight, come on... They seemed seriously understaffed in Y in my opinion.

I did that on purpose - keep it off a few minutes, so that the beep goes on in the galley again. Unbelievable indeed, even Craphansa would manage that.

EK do offer pre allocated seating to members of their frequent flyers programme so next time join that, select your seats and then ask to use your United cards at the airport . They may seat 10 abreast but at least they give you 34" pitch to compensate which is more than most. I'm surprised at the service, when I flew MAN - DXB I was impressed as the FA's had little notepads on which they noted requests so they did not forget about any requests. The FA even took a polaroid photo of myself and my partner as a souvenir (this is something they offer for the children) , and even gave us a pack of playing cards without being asked.
I suppose we just got lucky!

50K is absolutely ok in my opinion! We Germans need the ridiculous ammount of 150K to become Senator (Star Gold), is it 100K for residence outside Germany?

Good move, judging from your reports you can't do anything wrong when booking SQ First Class! I flew in SQ's Biz and I was already impressed, their Eco however is a bit overrated but good as well.

If you have too less miles left to spend it for a flight, you can always shop in the Miles&Less shop, although their products are horrible oberpriced when you pay with miles, but even better to give the unused miles to Craphansa.

Ah, now I know why you were talking about your and your girlfriend's UA account in the report. Smart move when you are living there and when you are planning to fly on UA in the future.

By the way, my girlfriend and I wanted to fly BKK-HKG-BKK on KQ and ET when we were in the area last year, but unfortunately were no flights available anymore (on short notice) and furtermore told us the agent in the travel agency that both airlines are always late and not very reliable. Is that ture? I think that BKK-HKG return is the perfect opportunity to check both airlines out without having to fly to Africa and I hope I get the chance to do it next year on this route. Anyway, in the end we bought a CX ticket to HKG and back.

Another question (sorry to annoy you Lari, but since you are living in Thailand right now you might have information): Do you know everything about Thai-Sky Airlines? It is the perfect opportunity to fly on a L1011 (which is still missing in my logbook). Do they have regular scheduled flights now and are these flights bookable via the internet or only at the airport like OX? And are they reliable or are they like: "Sorry, no flight today, try it tomorrow"?

I've been on 4 EK planes and all were fine; two of them were the DXB-BKK legs (and thence to HKG though I was only onboard for the DXB<->BKK legs). My friend just got back from MNL, again on 4 EK craft and he was impressed with the service also.

Give them another go - don't base it all on 1 pair of flights.

I think KQ is rather reliable. No idea about ET. I'd like to fly these airlines as well, KQ is very cheap usually - about 4500 Baht+taxes. You would also earn Flying Blue miles, but the cheapest is V class, thus no 100% accrual.

Yes they seem to have regular flights again. Very weird schedule though - the plane seems to go on to TPE from HKG. I believe there is one flight that has 1h05min turnaround at HKG, that might be manageable. KUL has 1-2 weekly flights, scheduled turnaround 30 minutes. So unless you want to stay overnight, KUL could work with a 9I oneway+LH/AK oneway. I would say they are extremely unreliable... Probably along the lines "sorry no flight today". I need to do the L1011 as well, but IMHO it would be better to buy the ticket at the office in the morning after confirming that the flight is operating. That makes it difficult to find cheap LH/AK flights from KUL though. No online booking, ticket would have to be bought at their office. I was supposed to do HKG with a friend, but they decided to have this "break" from June until late July...

Me too, and especially annoying as we had one real bag for two people. Instead of the Marriott shopping bags, I could have emptied a duty free shop at the airport and had way more luggage....

Nice to hear your report.

I have flown on EK in 2001 and their service was one of the best, now to see your report on EK is simply shocking , I am thinking of flying Emirates again but seeing your report makes me think twice now.


I flew ET on BKK-HKG route, the service is pretty alright. I was unfortunate to fly on the leased aircraft , ET-ALL. This aircraft has no PTV but the leather seat is very comfortable. More comfortable then Jetstar Asia's seat.

It's really confusing as some friends and relatives have travelled MUC-DXB-MUC several times and always praised the Eco product. I also heard some really positive stories about the short Australia-New Zealand legs not long ago.

Just a thought: is it somehow possible that there's an (intentional) general difference in service and number of F/As between their two-class and three-class flights?

I had planned to take EK soon for flights to the Middle East or onwards but I might better stick to Etihad and Qatar Airways...

May very well be, I don't know for sure. I think there might also be a difference between longhaul flights and these extensions. Seems like the schedule for the f/as is not very nice - BKK-HKG 1345-1745 and back 2225-0005.

An interesting fact that the flight was wide open on the cheapest classes on the way back, and it ended up having 100% load. Perhaps they just want to sell even all seats at this low V fare to seriously undercut competitors' fares. TG/CX were almost double the price.

I flew Emirates on the same routing a few years ago and found the service to be average at best. The amenities offered are definitely nice, but the F/As are a mix batch. My theory is that HKG-BKK-HKG is a relatively low yield route with lots of leisure and limited English speaking passengers. Therefore, the crew believe that they can carry the minimal service, and no one will complain about. But there is no excuse to skip the pre-meal beverage round and after meal tea/coffee service. I think the Thai F/As are usually a bit friendlier, too.

It is sad to see the service declined so quickly.

I flew Thai Sky in may, for the best ticket rate I went to their office near downtown Bangkok. At least they decide some time in advance when they fly, they told me they only flew to Hong Kong on thursday and saturday the following week. Luckily this fitted my travel plans, and the actual flights were on time, not particularly cheap (around 120 euro roundtrip including taxes) but full meal service. Don't forget to reconfirm your return flight though.

Yes, you are right! I was harassed by UK GlobeGround agents in that regard and charged GBP 100 in the end - ridiculous

Btw Lufthansa, very good report.. and you are amongst the first who talks negatively about EKs service. Since you are a very frequent flyer, I value your opinion a lot - indeed, it made me think. My ex-gf came to see me on EK in the old days and was completely pissed by the attitude of the "new economy airlines"..  Wink

Me too, and especially annoying as we had one real bag for two people. Instead of the Marriott shopping bags, I could have emptied a duty free shop at the airport and had way more luggage....

I did that once in VIE! My carry-on was 10Kg and too heavy according to the OS agent (I was flying LH to FRA). I opened it, removed my camera bag, and told him that my carry-on was 8Kg and my "personal item" was 2Kg. I got a really nasty look and he let me through. At the gate, I promptly put back my camera bag back into my carry-on. What a waste of time...

Interesting to read your experience. I flew VIE-DXB v.v. in March 2005 in Y/Cl and I found the service O.K. Nothing to write home about as rumour had it, but it was O.K. In my opinion, the food was good and a lot in terms of size. Maybe EK suffers from growing too fast?

no question emirates has gone way down.
i flew on A6 EMN as well and a number of ptvs didn't work and the bathrooms were a mess.

The crew were absolutely devoid of any manners, although the food was great.

When somebody asks to have a seat pre-booked, I just pick up the phone and call EK and they do it for everybody. Your travel agent told you they don't because they don't do it through CRS, like others do.

My "travel agent" was an EK ticketing agent at their BKK office, and told me seat assignments are only possible in C/F and that's what their website says as well.

Thanks for the load of information! Maybe I am flying down to BKK when Condor is offering BKK flights again in the upcoming winter season and when I am so lucky and get two 99 EUR flights (which are pretty hard to get). When I am in BKK for a few days, I will of course try to get finally a flight on the L1011.

BKK since over 2 years. Priced at 5200THB = 127 US$ for BKK-HKG-BKK which is close to 2000mls return. If this is not good enough for you, why you didnt book yourself in to EK Biz at 19900 THB = 485 US$ or CX First.

We have now really cheap prices here in BKK and I actually do not care about any services as long as I get there in time. I just paid 199THB = 4.85 US$ for BKK to PEN. Not worth the argument about anything.

I would not wonder if you are one of those fins who study on Bangkok University.......
