This past weekend I flew down to Baltimore to see the Red Sox and Orioles play. I flew US and stopped in PHL both ways. I must say, PHL was an awful connecting airport. It was my first time flying through PHL, I have flown US on 3 other ocasions, each time stopping in PIT. For a Hub airport, PHL is a dump and I was not impressed at all. I know BOS is no gem by any means, but I was expecting PHL, Uone of US top 2 cities, to have better facilities.
Also, we experienced so bad delays as well. For starters, the play left the gate at BWI 40 mins late, we also sat in the runway for an additional 30 mins because PHL was having weather problems. It was raining out in BWI, not to bad, but we were under the impression that PHL was getting nailed. When we finally took off, the shortest flight ever, thank god, we got to PHL to see that there was only a light shower. To make matters worse, we landed and sat off to the side of the runway for about 10 minutes, then had to taxi all the way around to the gate where we had to sit for another 25 minutes because the gate we needed was occupied. Luckily for us, I was traveling with 4 other guys, the plane was continuing to BOS so we didnt even have to go far once we got off. But on the other hand, I was talking to a few other people that had already missed their connecting flights. In a nutshell, we had a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes of delays. Another thing to point out, PHL was not using 2 runways for takeoffs, they had only one going, we had to cross the 2 active landing runways to get to the runway we were going to takeoff from which added another 20 minutes tothe time it took for us to taxi from gate the runway for takeoff.
All around, I was not impressed with connecting through PHL, for a major hub airport, the facilities were nothing great, felt rather cramped, the delays for simple rain were awful and to top it off, they did not even serve drinks on the flight from PHL-BOS. After my experience, I know if I have ever chooce US, I will be sure to fly through PIT or CLT.
