Two Tastes Of CRJ On AC Jazz - YYZ-YQT-YYZ

Arrived at new T1 at YYZ for a 0630 flight. I am not a frequent flyer,
and I have no idea so many people can be at the airport before sunrise.
I had gone to the 'practice runs' for the new T1 but it's the first
time I actually used T1. Check-in was efficient with the self-service
kiosks and was inside in no time. A substantial crowd built up at the
ground level gates, including those of my flight and another early
flight to YWG (quite a torture to be on a full CRJ for 2 hours). I
didn't know quite a lot of people travelled to a 'middle of nowhere'
city like YQT but it's a 90% full flight. Was assigned seat 10D which
was an aisle seat, I switched to 12F at the kiosk to take a look at
YQT. Turned out this seat was non-reclinable, and it's always hard to
look out on a CRJ. Take off was smooth with so many people on board,
so-called 'food' was a cup of drink plus two pieces of shortcake, I
picked water. A quiet non-eventful short flight, weather all clear all
the way, most pax were businessmen-like single men. The interior of CRJ
was nice and clean but felt cramped. It felt special first time landing
at a small airport like YQT, because I live in YYZ and am a 'big
airport guy'. YQT had a short runway (last time I checked it's just
1890m). The plane approached with full flaps down, maximum reverse
thrust and a hard brake at touch down and turned around at the end of
the runway. Upon arrival, YQT did use an air bridge instead of ground
level walkway (understandable, it's like -30C here in winter). Saw
several turboprops and the menacing sight of an old 747SP with 'Global
Peace Ambassadors'(N4522V). Wonder how this old lady could touch down
at this airport. Anyway we were the only plane at the terminal so we
got off fast.

Woke up to catch this morning flight although the airport was just like
2 km away from my hotel. Something was amiss, it's so foggy outside.
Arrived at YQT in no time and found out the previous and next AC flight
was cancelled, but not mine. Checked in before a large group of pax
from the cancelled previous flight came in. The flight turned out to be
full, surprising for a Saturday morning flight. I really believed AC
took advantage of the fog and combined two flights into one. It's foggy outside but not that bad. A NW Saab 340 departed before us. By 1020 or so the sound of reverse thrust was heard, a very new CRJ705 slided into the terminal. I boarded and took seat 24A. First thing I noticed was the interior of CR7 was a huge improvement over the older CRJ - much brighter and the windows were of a correct level. Everything felt better in a CR7. Boarding was slow because of a large number of senior citizens but here we go at 1050. YQT had no taxiway so the CR7 rolled to the end of runway 07 and turned around. Since the runway was short, the pilots revved up the engines while staying braked, and we went off really fast. Turned out the fog was just around YQT, it's all clear after that. Had a juice and some crunchies this time and arrived in no time... the plane braked heavily at YYZ causing a few pax to hold on to the seat to their front including me. Being a big airport, taxied on the ground for a good 10 minutes before arriving at the terminal, packed up and left for home.

Ooo, you went to Thunder Bay, my hometown! Too bad they don't get scheduled AC service in there any longer. I've spent many, many hours at Thunder Bay Airport watching planes. That terminal is only about 12 years old. The old one had no jetways - you walked across the tarmac, -40 or not! Where'd you stay in TBay? 2 km away - the Valhalla? The Airlane (Travelodge)? The Comfort Inn? The Best Western? What did you do and see in TBay?

I checked the AC web site and did see AC mainline CRJ going there. Does AC still send an occasional A319 to YQT? Have you ever seen a 747 landing here? Quite an experience landing and taking off at YQT. Not many planes landing there so you must have waited for long... you can feel the whole place moving with the arrival of a pax plane. Felt great on a brand new plane.  Big grin
