First of all, thanks a whole bunch to FlySSC, an a.netter and an AF insider (I think) who gave me the info on IFE on my MEX-CDG leg. I was so happy when he told me that I would have my individual screen on the 747; and that’s why I was so motivated to complete good trip report. Sorry it took me two weeks but I have been busy with my school.

Saying goodbye to my dogs wasn’t easy. They knew I was leaving. Aren’t they cute? The one on the left is sulking, the center wiping his tears and the right one says “Méchant!” So I console her: “I’ll be gone for only 7 days OK?”

The new South Wing of GDL. It’s quite nice eh? I have yet to see the spacious, cylindrical North Wing.

My vehicle to Ciudad de Mexico.

Doesn’t that stormy cloud look so surreal? Though, this is very typical in Guadalajara during the rainy season.

The flight was on-time but the boarding was a bit messy; probably because the plane was not that full. Service was just OK, but it was only a one-hour flight. May be it is because I am Thai so I expect everyone to be smiling all the time like we do in Thailand. Meals? Peanuts and alcoholic beverage as always on this route. If you fly in the morning you get a patisserie packed by EL GLOBO which is supposed to be a gourmet baker here in Mexico.

Ready to land at MEX. Look at the glorious view of Mexico City:

Aeromexico international transfer lounge. I like it a lot because the bar is self-service. And the view?—simply priceless. The AF 777 sandwiched between MX and LH you see here leaves one or two hours before my AF 747, I think. Air France is doing extremely well on this route.

As this was my first time flying out of Mexico with an FM3 (the Mexican green card), I discovered that it was such a hassle. I’ve never seen a system so poorly designed in my whole life. The immigration office in Guadalajara was great. The best I’ve ever dealt with. I got my FM 3 in 15 days. I wish getting the carte de séjour when I was a student in France was that easy.

But the immigration officers at MEX? They were so mean! Since I was coming from Guadalajara, the AF transfer desk (inside the secured area) said I had to go to the immigration office #22 (or 23… I forgot), which was OUTSIDE the security checkpoint. I have to get a stamp there then come back in to give her a copy and then keep one for myself for the return. There was an immigration section for people arriving just right by AF gate but they told me that that section was intended only for arriving passengers. OK? so I had to go outside and look for office #22. It was already late so the immigration office was already closed! So I kept looking everywhere for an immigration stand. I was hoping to ask the AF check-in staff outside but the check-in line was so long. So I went to ask a Continental agent. I said I know “I am not flying Continental but could you please tell me where the immigration stand is please?” (in Spanish of course). He said “We’re not Air France!” So I said “¿Sabe señor? Por eso, en Guadalajara, dicen que los chilangos son animales.” And I just walked away. I really didn’t want to be a bitch but he really asked for it. How much energy would it have cost him to tell me that it was just right behind him.

In the end I found the immigration stand right by the security checkpoint to go into the international terminal. How was I supposed to know? The sign in front of the immigration office did not indicate this. Anyhow, I didn’t want this small incident to ruin my transatlantic crossing. So I went back into Aeromexico international transfer lounge, got a glass of wine and all that was forgotten.

AF 435

Boarding was VERY messy. They have separate lines for Business and First but then the lines merged 5 inches after the separation point. But that’s because of the airport. And all the boarding agents were so tired. This lady standing in front of the aircraft door told a passenger “Here, just take the boarding pass out and hold it out, in front of your passport, like this!!!” as if that passenger were her husband (who has lived with her for 20 years) or her kid whom she hates.

I have yet to see an Air France flight between Mexico and Paris that is not full. They are doing extremely well on this route. It’s full, full, full all the time on both legs.
Here’s the economy cabin:

This is the dinner. Quelle délice! I forgot to take picture of the breakfast. But it was good too.

Paris, enfin.

View from the hotel room by La Place Vendôme:

Jogging in the evening dans le Jardin des Tuilleries.

Le Ritz Escoffier (Cooking School). I really recommend it to everyone.

Ben voilà, je me suis retrouvé, à nouveau, à Paris. I am back in Mexico now though.

CDG-AMS-MEX on AF and KL (11 Sep. 05)

Both trips above have been completed. I just need to find some time. Clickmx is awesome by the way. Now I can fly from Guadalajara to Cancun—and then go down to Playa del Carmen or go to Isla Mujeres—every weekend. Can’t wait to write about it.

Nice pics buddy, but perhaps you could elaborate more with respect to the in-flight service, your opinion on seat pitch, any interesting details of your flight, etc.

I flew to and from CDG last year with AF and I found the seat pitch of the 744 really tight and uncomfortable (and I am only 5'8"). In addition, my plane did not have PTV's in coach, so I was not as lucky as you were. On the other hand, flight attendants were very kind and the food and drinks were really good for coach.

Next flights: MEX-MZT AM E90; TIJ-MEX AM 788

airplane  PS ON INFLIGHT EXPERIENCE  airplane

Coach was fine. I am Thai so I don't take that much space. But what I hate about European and U.S. airliners is that their seats are not contoured to my short body and back. Even TG's seats are a knotch too high.  grumpy  So I suffer a lot by the time we land. Mexicana is the only airline in the world that I feel, "WOW, that's a seat made for me!"

I also like the new seat design. It's got a button-like little thingie for you to hang your coat. But I don't know what the slit above it is for. Does anyone KNOW?

The inflight entertainment was decent and recent. I watched "Guess Who?" and a French film called....shoot I forgot. Oh yes now I remember  devil  "Le Démon de Midi" literally "devil in broad daylight" (French expression to refer to those men in between their 30's and 40's who have pig-like habits or going through mid-life crisis.) IT WAS SOOOO GOOD. I LAUGHED SO MUCH I woke everyone.

IF not everything else about inflight service was fine. The service is better than U.S. carriers as always. But still one grade less than Asian carriers. Huh...what can I say? One thing I have to criticize is that many people around me requested to be woken up for duty free but FA's never bothered. When these passengers woke up for breakfast, they found out: "Ah non, c'est trop tard. La caisse est déjà fermé mesdames!" I thought they got % for selling duty free. I guess sometimes rest is better than money huh?

Very nice trip report. It is always interesting to read and see about trips that I don't have the opportunity to fly, like MEX-CDG.

The terminal in GDL is much nicer than when I was there a few years back. As for the inflight GDL-MEX service aboard AeroMexico, I guess our expectations are different. It is such a short flight, so I was amazed when complimentary alcohol was served. I wouldn't expect a meal for what is about, what, 1 hour?

I look forward to future reports and will talk with you soon.

Hola Thaiboy amigo,

I miss baguet! She was the one who had the puppies right?

Nice trip report. I saw AF's 777 when I was connecting in MEX, and I found it strange since I thought they flew the 744, so now I know it was the second flight into MEX that day, right?

How packed was the Air France flight? Its surprising that AeroMexico doesn't do its best to get another aircraft to cover the route twice weekly.

Interesting that you say that the Immigration officers at MEX were mean. My experience was totally different. Actually, they were all nice to me. Remember I was telling you that American officers are the worst, well surprisingly, this time around they were even very nice too (what is this world coming to!). Upon arriving at LAX, they were greeting us at the door of the aircraft at Tom Bradley and were asking for our passports. When the officer saw mine, he said, "you're from L.A., right?" and I affirmatively replied, to which he responded, "welcome home". Which felt really nice to hear.

Can't wait for your: GDL-MEX-EZE-MEX-LAX-TIJ-GLD trip report comming next month! You better take good pics and notes for that one, okay!  Wink

Hey Thaiboy!

I just can't stop laughing about “¿Sabe señor? Por eso, en Guadalajara, dicen que los chilangos son animales.” That's hysterical...!!!

Hence the never ending story about jalisquillos and chilangos...!!!

Have the best turbulences....

Great trip report and nice pics. How did you like Paris? I was born in a small town about an hours drive from Paris, called Fontainebleau. I can't wait to read you next reports,

There is one daily AF 772ER doing CDG-MEX plus 3 or 4 weekly 744's complementing this route.

Next flights: MEX-MZT AM E90; TIJ-MEX AM 788
