Pleasureflying HAJ-FRA-SZG-LNZ-FRA-HAJ On LH/OS

All flights took place on 06-NOV-2005 making this a same-day return (used as a milage-run as well as to "add" new airports: SZG and LNZ). Flights were on time unless stated otherwise. Checkin and security controls had no waiting times to speak of.
As, apart from some sunshine at HAJ, the day was grey and rainy, I didn´t take any pics. Sorry.

HAJ - FRA LH 1005 0955-1055h B735 (no reg.)
As I was travelling with a small bag only, I used a machine to check-in. A negative experience that I´ve made with LH´s checkin-kiosks recently, is the fact that it will let you select the exact seat for your first flight only; for any further flights seats are automatically assigned  Sad .
Once boarding started, I made my way from LH´s lounge to the gate. Once again only very few pax made use of the "quick boarding" turn stile ...
Flight was pretty full. Departure was on rwy 27R giving good views of the area I live in (sunshine in usually foggy November !). Service was "beverage only" (as usual).
In FRA we received a terminal position using gate A28.
As I had 1h+ to make it to my departure gate at "B gates" (and I didn´t intent to leave the "secure" area), I did some spotting from inside "A gates" and by using FRA´s excellent information computers I found out that my following flight was ontime inbound and would be parked at some remote stand to the extreme east of the apron.
After some time I used the tunnel to walk from A to B-gates.

FRA - SZG LH 6422/OS0264 1200-1305h F70 (no reg.)
Leaving from B12 and catching the first bus to our remote stand, I once again had time to be awed by the amount of street-traffic beneath FRA´s terminals.
After the second bus had offloaded its pax onto the aircraft, the flight had a good load factor.
Starting rolling, we circumnavigated the parallel runways, went past the now disbandoned space where the USAF used to be located and headed for departure on runway 18. Once airborne, we were flying above a solid layer of clouds all the way to SZG. Service had food for purchase only; also most drinks (incl. softdrinks but minus water&coffee) would have required purchase. I can´t comment on quality of it as I intended to get a decent meal at SZG itself anyhow.

At SZG:
The apron was pretty much deserted. It was cold with light rain. I disbandoned my original plan to walk to Red Bull´s "Hangar 7" and was too lazy to catch a taxi to drive there. So (after checkin for my ongoing flights) I ended up in the Airest restaurant at SZG where I enjoyed some very good Austrian cuisine:
- Creamy pumkin soup topped with pumpkin kernels and Aceite Balsamico
- A delicious saddle of venison served with red cabbage and potatoes; salad
- Warm Apfelstrudel with vanilla ice and whipped cream
- some local Märzen (beer)
All the time I enjoyed a good view of both the city´s "skyline" as well as the apron, but apart from some private traffic there was not much to see.
After this intentionally lengthy lunch (> 2h) weather was better and I decided to go onto a stroll around the airport´s proximity. Doing this I found out that SZG is one of the not too many airport at which a road runs beneath the runway.
One thing that I memorized positively is the fact that restrooms/toilets at SZG and also at LNZ were very well layed out and maintained !

SZG - LNZ LH6433/OS0211 1715-1745h CRJ "Salzburg"
Okay, this is an unusual segment and currently available on Sundays only. It´s the first leg of a triangle flight SZG - LNZ - DUS - SZG.
Our a/c had been sitting on the far end of the apron for the whole 4+ hours that I had been at SZG; once again we got bussed to the a/c. Good load for the sector I used it, but not full. Of course no service on this very short flight.

The exact timings:

  • Left remote stand: 1715h
  • rotate: 1720h
  • end of climb: 5m20s after rotate
  • start of decend: 45s after end of climb
  • touchdown at LNZ: 1735h, exactly 14min32sec after rotate
  • distance according to Great Circle Mapper: 63 mi

I was the only pax deplaning at LNZ and I got walked across the nightly apron by a ramp agent. While doing this I noticed a USAF C-17 Globemaster from Charleston, SC parked on the apron. The female ramp agent told me that it had brought home another batch of Austrian soldiers from Afghanistan the day before.
Having dashed through arrivals I found out that my next plane was delayed inbound from FRA by 15 minutes. During the waiting time I checked out this nice airport including its viewing terrace.

LNZ - FRA LH3527 1855-2005h BAe146-200 (by Eurowings) D-AHOI
As the a/c was running late inbound, consequently departure was delayed by about 15 minutes. Flight had a good load, but I was fortunate and the middle seat remained empty. Attentive service from EW-personnell (better than LH-mainline).
Arriving 15 minutes late at FRA, we received a remote stand (as usual for this a/c-type). Bussing to the terminal took some time (we also had to yield to a number of crossing a/c). Fortunately for me we entered Terminal B right across from the gate where my next flight was leaving, so no need to hurry.

FRA - HAJ LH1005 2055-2145h B735 D-ABEI
Boarding started a few minutes after my arrival from LNZ. I got bussed back to the very same area of remote stands where my flight from LNZ was parked Big grin ...
Re: "D-ABEI": This very a/c features seats that are different from the LH-standard. They are covered by leather that I would describe as light-brownish. But the real disadvantage is, that (probably due to the design of the seats) the available space is even less than the LH-standard on its B733/735`s.
Apart from the fact that I had been on the very same a/c the day before (when it also operated the same flight), the flight was uneventful. As with most of my recent LH´s flights, it was pretty full.

Hi HT,

Quoting HT (Thread starter):
is the fact that it will let you select the exact seat for your first flight only; for any further flights seats are automatically assigned

-Rather silly IMHO, BA for example let you choose for each segment. Though is this perhaps because some of the flights were were codeshare and not mainline LH?

A pretty interesting route, quite fancy that jolly myself.

Thanks

Mark

This happens also when the second sector is operated by LH mainline.

Nice trip report!
Do you wanna let us know how many miles you earned and how much money you spend for the daytrip?  Smile

Okay, the MILES-part: 3000 plus the usual LH-bonus.
The MONEY-part: Well, I really wanted to go onto that flight, so I spent threehundredandseventeen EUR for the flights (writing this amount of money in digits looks even worse !) ...  ashamed
