After visiting Saigon for 2 days. It was time to go home. I didn’t mean to do my trip report with TG from BKK to SGN because I was rushing to the aircraft after check-in due to my stand-by ID ticket. So there wasn’t really enough time to enjoy taking pictures for the report.

However, on the way back from SGN, I meant to get on the TG687 flight to BKK. The flight scheduled time was at 21.10. I arrived the airport earlier and saw the LH counter check-in. And I was thinking of trying to get myself checked-in with LH so I showed up at the LH counter and had my name listed in the stand-by list.

The pictures of the airport in Saigon. the airport is not big. It's pretty small.

This is TG check-in counter that I meant to go with them, but I decided to try LH instead.

15 minutes had passed and I was informed that I could get on this flight. So I was really happy as I had never tried LH before.

At the check-in counter, the airport agent who checked me in dressed up with typical local Vietnamese dress. I think this is nice!!

I had several shopping bags that I wanted to load them to the A/C but they didn’t let me due to many plastic bags I had so I guessed that I had to carry them all on the aircraft. Luckily one of the LH staff came and brought me a LH baggage box which I could pack my things in one box. I was really happy.

This is my boarding pass.

I know it always is probihated to take a picture of immigration of any airport. But I always want to manage to take a quick snapshot. At least one!! But what most funny thing that has happened to me is that I had no idea that we had to pay airport tax which costs $12 USD. I had only $6 USD with me including my Thai Baht (They except any currency exchange) and some still missing. Luckily, there was a thai cabin crew for TG with their passengers, and he helped me out with the money. I wanted to return him when I got back to BKK so I asked his contact details and all he could say is "doesn't matter" I really appreicated his help so "Khob Khun Krub" I said.

And yes it was a really big surprise at the airport before leaving the country. So now I know I always have to ask for the departure airport tax fee.

This is the sign board that tells me where to board to the aircraft.

This is when I was in line for boarding on LH773

When I arrived on board, I was greeted by one of the crews and she showed me the way to my seat. Before the aircraft was pushed back, the captain introduced himself on board and they started with the real security demonstration from the crew. After that, they informed that this flight would serve only snack due to short. I did not mind that though because all I wanted to do was to walk around the aircraft and enjoy it.

View from inside the aircraft.

In flight magazines.... Again I took one home with me.

Little snack they provided. It's not bad. It's cheese sandwich and banana cake with drinking water. It's not much but it's alright.....

The toilets are located downstairs. I walked down the stair cases and saw several nice toilets. When I walked up to the cabin and saw one of the crews so I asked him if there was a crew rest on the flight. He explained me where it was and that they had to walk though the kitchen as it was connected next to each other.

The cabin crews are outstanding. Especially the one (who is on the picture of real security demo) I got to talk to, he came later to me and brought me a little bag of all treats he could collect. There were 3 cans of small soda, chocolates and gummies. I smiled to him and thanked him from giving me little bag of treats. It was an enjoyable flight.

Little nice snapshots from Ho Chi Minh city for you all.

Hi Kenneth,
real good pix and an interesting report, thank you!.
Glad that you enjoyed your very first LH flight, I was also with LH yesterday,
but on one of this "uncountable" domestic short runs on an Contact Air operated ATR 42-500 from
Stuttgart to Dresden, not bad, also with real friendly employees, but your route was much more interesting.

Great stuff, really enjoyed the report and fancy a trip to SGN myself.

-No, but I'd like to visit. How long did you go for? I will be in Thailand for a few days in december but would only have 1 day spare for SGN, so not sure id it would be worth going for only 1 day.

Nice report as usual, Ken. On a really long flight I would get frustrated looking at the hole where the PTV is meant to go, and I would hope the food was a bit more substantial  yummy . But a great crew makes up for just about everything else, doesn't it!
Cheers

Getting a great LH crew is like winning in a lottery. Mostly, they are terrible - especially on BKK-CGK/KUL/SGN. Even in Business. First is great.

Glad you enjoyed your flight Kennethsk - A friend of mine flew BKK-SGN-BKK a while ago. His comments were "horrible tiny sandwich, a small cup of water and horribly rude crew. And I only get 50% miles to my account!"

I guess it's down to what you expect, and as a non-rev I see you have very reasonable expectations to say the least, on any carrier.

TG serves hot meals on this route so IMHO no excuse for LH to serve this crap shown here. A sandwich and water vs. hot meal, wines, drinks etc.

Keep up the nice reports Kennethsk!

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the interesting report. I was not aware that LH has 5th Freedom rights between SGN and BKK, but it reminds me of my SR MD11-flight BKK-SIN a few years ago...

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 14):

I had the same opinion until 2 or 3 years ago. But in the recent past I had the impression that LH has learned the lesson that there are other cometing airlines and the passengers are not begging to be carried on board an LH flight. So all my recent (short haul) flights on LH had been very nice, with great crews who showed a real smile instead of the usual roboter-like smile painted on the faces.

Cheers,
Tom

Indeed Patroni,

I agree about the European flights. Top notch.

But BKK-CGK-BKK was terrible - the Thai guy on the return kept telling me how I should voice my concerns as it's a daily occurrence passengers complaining about service and meals. Why would I - LH generally sucks. 2 more eVouchers and I'm done.

At the end this Thai F/A said he just works for LH for fun and expects to get some more money, do another degree and join TG longhaul.

TG is my preferred carrier, and their service in all classes is excellent, but I guess Ken had the chance to try different carriers and aircraft, so grabbed it. Lucky guy. Living in Bangkok, I guess Thai is always an easy option for him.

SGN is totally diffirent than Bangkok. But I went there for only 2 full days and 1 night. I mean if you can arrange something like that.. Why not!!

Quoting TNboy (Reply 13):

Well...if Short flight like SGN-BKK then I won't mind with this kinda snack. But of course if it's longer flihgt then I would surely expect something more!

Quoting TNboy (Reply 13):

Oh yes Bill, crew just made up everything else for sure!!

Well, what can i say!!? I do have resonable expectation but your friend may have higher one. So everything comes out not a satisfaction for your friend so he starts looking for something in comparasion but still if he cannot find what he is expecting then he starts whining. Crews are fine. They are not rude, sometimes they have just too many PAX on the aircraft and he couldn't make all PAX feel like an angel.

And all this time, remember crews are there to make sure you are safe during the flight. When you get to your destination safely then their job is well-performed, providing you a service on board is a good bonus airlines offer.

TG serves HOT meal and that's so true. However, TG goes to BKK-SGN-BKK direct and that's a short flight. LH this time comes from MUC-BKK-SGN and then back from SGN-BKK-MUC. I mean the flight takes only 1 hour and 10 mins so I wouldn't mind just that small sandwich and a PLASTIC cup of water as long as I could enjoy my snack and if i don't have enough, I would always ask for more. I'm sure they would have spared ones for you.

But thank you for reading my trip report and your honest opinion. Really appreciate it!

Yes Bill, I could have gone to TG flight that night in SGN but I sort of wanted to try LH myself to see how it was like. I'm not saying that TG is bad and of cause I don't have a high expectation from the flight, the airlines or the crews. Of cause as long as I feel comfortable with the flight then everything is fine by me.

Hey Christ,
Well, if you plan to fly LH from BKK to SGN then I think you should make sure if they have LH flight on the specific day you are going. Because like I have faced, It was over booked on TG on the day I left BKK and praying to get on board due to my ID ticket and LH didn't operate that day but they did on the way back from SGN to BKK.

To be honest, when I flew with TG to SGN on the 1st of December (just last Thursday) though the flight was okay, but I didn't enjoy it as much as when I came back with LH...

This is so true, some passengers act like "QUEEN".. they ask for everything they could. Well, at 35,000 feet above ground....why you need everything?? And when they didn't get intention from cabin crews, they start complaning/whining a lot....they act like the cabin crews care!!
