Hi all, this is my first trip report (and my first trip since 2000).

Nov 26, 2005 - DL/Song 2056 LAS-MCO
Equip: 757-200 Seat: 2C (zone 1)
Depart gate: D41 - Arrive gate: 77
Sch. Depart: 10:50PM - Wheels up: 10:55PM
Sch. Arrive: 6:00AM - At gate: 5:55AM

So it was a dark, cold night in Las Vegas. The flight departed form the D concourse, after I had toured it of course. The D concourse had recently opened its northeast wing. I walked around the three wings that existed (the northwest wing should be built in another few years). So after a lot of sitting after I had walked around, the flight started boarding about 25 minutes before departure. I was in zone 1 so I got to board in the first group. We boarded the 752 from door 2 and I proceeded to turn left and head towards the front of the aircraft. My co-worker (we were on our way to a conference in MCO) was in 2B, and we sat and waited while the rest of the plane boarded. They booted up the IFE system, and low and behold, I see TUX! The in flight entertainment system runs Linux! I of course mention this to my co-worker and talk about how neat it is that a part of this plane is running linux. A friend of mine sitting a few rows back yells out my name and asks if I've given everyone a lecture on how the IFE runs linux. I reply in the affirmative. It turned out that no one sat in 2A, so he moved over after they had closed the door and we started to push back. It was exciting, this was the first time I had been on a plane in five years. So the plane starts to taxi, and we end up about 3rd or 4th in line for take off, 5 minutes ellapse and we're ready to go. Takeoff was uneventful, just a regular takeoff as far as I could tell.

The in flight service was very limited since it was a redeye flight - the dasani bottled water tasted like tap water - eeeewwww. We started at 31,000', up to 33,000' then finally topped out at 35,000'. The highlight of the flight was watching Samuari Champloo from 33,000 ft. I only got about 30 minutes of sleep, I wish I had got more. After Samuari Champloo and The Boondocks (on [adult swim] on Cartoon Network), I just turned on the map and tried to go to sleep.

It got bumpy over NM, then again as we passed over a front somewhere in Alabama or Miss. It was a smooth ride into MCO, landing on runway 35L (I think, it was dark and I was tired).

They deplaned through door 1, so since I had stowed my backpack under the seat in front of me, I was able to grab it and scurry off the plane first (everyone else was still collecting their things). Never been first off a plane before.

It was, overall, a smooth ride. The seats seemed narrow (more narrow than regular coach seats I would sit in later this week on a 767), but I guess overall it wasn't too bad of a flight.

So I get to MCO after my conference early again (via Disney's Magical Express). I had checked my bags at the hotel, but the woman working the airline checkin desk only printed up my boarding pass for my ATL-LAS leg, and not the MCO-ATL leg. So once I got to MCO I had to go over to the DL desk, and I saw the huge line for having to check in with paper tickets. I didn't want to wait in line so I went over to the customer service line and told the guy we had checked in at the hotel, but we were only issued one of our two boarding passes, he was quick to get our names and IDs and printed me and my co-worker our missing boarding pass. Good job DL! Excellent customer service! Instead of having to wait in line for 30 minutes I got my boarding pass in 2 minutes.

So we head through security without problems and we make our way to airside 4 to depart from gate 75. We grab a bit to eat at the burger king and wait for boarding to commense.

This is the one thing I hated about zone boarding. It seems people just hover in front of where the line is for scanning the ticket to let you on the jetway. So while they're boarding zones 1-3 say, everyone else is just huddled around the area, so if you're standing in the back you might think you're in line to get processed, but you're really not. You have to weave your way through the crowd to get to the front, and no one really cares to move out of the way. It'd be nice if DL told people to stay the hell out of the way until their zone is called!

So we get on the plane and the captian calls out that the latch to close one of the cockpit windows is broke and they have mx up here to fix it. Its supposed to take 15 minutes, and ends up taking close to 45 before they get it fixed and the captain clears the necessary paperwork to be on the way. We end up being 5th in line for takeoff at 35L, making us even later. Its an unventful flight to ATL, it was my first time in a 767. I got caught off guard, all of a sudden during climb, the engines spool down and I wonder what is going on. It wasn't right after takeoff, maybe we had got to 10,000' and we were changing our climb profile or something. But it did feel weird to have the engines spool down to almost idle, and eventually come back and we start climbing again. On our way into ATL, we get put in a holding pattern and we end up making one loop (comprising about 7-8 mintues) before we get cleared to land on 27L.

The weather isnt that nice in ATL - cloudy skies and a bit windy. The pilot brings the a/c down to just under the cloud ceiling for approach. While I felt it was a little rough in the front of the A/C, a friend of mine in the very last row (47) said it was like a roller coaster back there (yes, I know the back of a plane is more bumpy than the front). Apparently some of the F/As almost lost their lunches.

We get into ATL and everyone is worried about the fact we're late and many people might end up missing their connections. The F/A is smart enough to remind people that if they are not connecting, or wont be connecting within the next hour, to please stay seated while others with connections deplane.

I get off the plane and its 4:45, and my next flight it scheduled to leave at 5:21. Not exactly cutting it close, but I took no chances and me and my friend quickly walk to the next gate. I checked one of the boards on the way and it still says that the flight is on time so we keep walking...

Sch. Arrive: 6:47PM - At gate: 7:05PM

So we get to the gate and low and behold, this flight is delayed too, while they change a battery pack. Its pushed back to 5:45PM. So I grab a bite to eat from the Pizza hut further down the A concourse, and hit the rest room before I get back to the gate and realize they're boarding already. I scarf down the pizza and by that time they're boarding zone 5 (and I'm in zone 4, so I can board).

Once again, all these mindless sheep standing in the way, I have to push my way through the crowd to get to the gate agent who is letting people on the plane. Down the jetway I go, and I show my boarding pass to the F/A who is directing people to their seats. I'm one of the luck few who gets to go left (since they were boarding through door 2 again), and found my seat 12A.

So we push back and we taxi to the runway, when, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a short and stubby twin engine aircraft! With a little tug driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be The Spirit of Delta!

Yes, I saw the Spirit of Delta in ATL - at around 6PM Thursday Dec 1 2005. I tried to grab my camera out of my backpack stowed under the seat in front of me, but by the time I had got it and turned it on it was out of sight.  cry 

The flight was uneventful, the F/As had problems showing the safety video - some of the LCDs in the coach cabin were turning off, and they had to reboot the IFE system twice in flight to get it working again - I figured it was something to do with the new battery pack.

I was disappointed I couldn't find the DL channel that is ATC - I swear a few months ago reading that DL's channel 9 on their IFE is ATC, but it didn't seem to work for me.

So we're flying and its uneventful. The sunset was beautiful. The shades of deep purple and black fading through all the colors of the spectrum to the red on the horizon.

We get to LAS after the long flight, and we desend into the city, I can pick out all the geographic features - Hoover dam (form the Lake Mead side), Boulder City, US 93/95 Jct, Henderson, etc and we eventually land on 25L. I think we landed long - I could see the lights for the N/S runways not too far away from the A/C. We taxi to the D concourse and deplane through door 2. As I get off the jetway I see the airport and remember how nice it is to be home.

Does DL offer a limited Buy on Board selection on Song redeyes?

Yes, there was BoB for the Song redeye flight. I dont know what it was since I wasn't interested at all (I had brought my own gigantic bag of Red Vines and nutrigrain bars).
