After spending some time with my (grand)parents in Ýzmit, Turkey, I have a couple of days in Ýstanbul before leaving for Dubai tomorrow, 10 January.
Ý decided to book flights for a trip to Antalya, just for fun and to try out some new airlines for me. And as it turns out, Ýstanbul is cold and wet, so the warmer and sunny Antalya was a welcome, though short break.
Ý booked both flights via the respective airline websites. With Onur Air, everything was ok and Ý had to pick up the paper ticket from their desk at least one and a half hour before departure. With AtlasJet Ý had trouble getting my Dutch credit card accepted, so upon arriving in Ýstanbul on 31 December Ý first went to their desk to book the flight and at the same time pick up the Onur Air ticket.
09 JAN - Flight OHY222 ÝST-AYT 0730-0830
Aircraft: MD-88 TC-ONR
Arriving at 06.00 at the airport there was a huge queue for security to get into the domestic terminal. Once inside, it was very unclear where to go to check in. The big departure signs mention the gate number, but not the check in row. The Onur Air check in area was packed with people and it wasn`t clear who stood in the queue for yet another security check or for check in. Once at the airside Ý made my way to the boarding gate (for buses) and they were boarding two flights simultaneously (to Kayseri and Adana) before mine. Needless to say, this was very hectic. Finally upon boarding the MD88 there was no one to indicate which passengers should enter the plane through its rear exit under the tail, so inside they had to walk over each other to get to their seats. Ý got seat 25B assigned and when everyone had boarded moved to 23A, an overwing exit. Much more legroom, good seat, but Ý noted that there was an armrest on the window side (unusual with exit seats) AND that it couldn`t be moved. So the armrest was blocking the exit partially! The flight itself was uneventful; service was a muffin and a drink. Overall Ý found Onur Air a bit chaotic.
Antalya airport was a bit boring. The only international flight was a 737 of Kibris Turk Hava Yollari (Cyprus Turkish Airlines.) The rest was all to Ýstanbul Ataturk (Onur Air, Turkish Airlines and AtlasJet) and Pegasus to Sabiha Gokcen. Especially AtlasJet had a lot of flights, although they are not mentioned in their schedle. Maybe that had to do with the holiday season here.
For a slight moment Ý hoped that my flight would be on a 757 parked there, as Ý haven`t flown on that type yet, but it turned out to be an A320.
For boarding, we had to go through security, go one floor up to the waiting lounge and then down again to walk to the plane. The domestic terminal has no passenger bridges. A bit silly, if you ask me.

With AtlasJet everything went smoothly. Ý had checked myself in using the machine, selecting seat 4F. Nice plane, with IFE screens throughout the cabin. As a snack we got a cheese sandwich and something to drink. AtlasJet reminds me in a way of Air Berlin. They offer a business class (although Ý didn`t see any difference in seats or service) and they also have a frequent flyer programme, called JetMil.
From above it will be clear that Ý liked AtlasJet much more than Onur. Other airlines offering domestic scheduled flights in Turkey are, besides THY or course, Pegasus, Fly Air and Ýnter. Maybe next time...
Leaving for Dubai tomorrow at 19.10lt, will post a trip report on the Emirates flights when Ý get back home.
