OKC-DEN-SFO The SFO Meet (w/pics)

After the horrible Christmas I had where the family was so anti-gay and gay bashing, I thought it would be time for me to get out of dodge for a while. So where do I decide to go? The gayest city in the US of course, SFO. I was searching on the internet for good fares to different cities and I found a last minute deal on United.com. Round trip the fare was 564.00USD and I found a ticket on WN for my friend from ORD to join me, leaving on WN from MDW going to OAK, non-stop for 176.00USD roundtrip.

Since my flight didn't leave until 3:30PM, I decided to wave my packing until the morning and I met a friend in Lawton at the Military base there. (Well, it wasn't a friend, sort of an online aquaintance, you know, and it was totally a let down). Anyway, the next morning I woke up around 8:30AM and started packing. What to wear, what to wear? I ended up going shopping that morning and using some gift certificates that my family had given me for Christmas on some new "going out" gear. Around 11AM I went down to 23rd street in Oklahoma City and had Chinese food, then left for the airport. For those of you who don't know, Oklahoma City's Will Rogers Airport is undergoing a complete renovation. Well, more like demolishing the old airport and building a new one in its place.

I part in shuttle parking and waited for my shuttle to come pick me up and take me to the United Check In counters.

You can see from the outside how modern the airport is looking these days.

Here is a picture of the drop off area outside the airport.

We've sort of got the mini HKG chrome look going on. MUCH MUCH better than the old airport.

Well, I walked into the check-in area, and of course, it was loaded with people heading out on the UA flight to ORD. Unfortunately for those, their flight had been delayed until 4PM. It was supposed to be a 1:30 departure time. (I think). In the check out line, I was standing next to some University of Oklahoma Students who were headed on an advertising trip to Europe. They had a connecting flight to CDG at ORD and were concerned they would not make their flight. In fact, I think they were pretty much certain that they wouldn't. Their plans took them to Paris, London, Rome, and Budapest. Sounds like a blast, and they were getting 3 hrs of college credit for the trip.

Here is a picture of us standing in the check-in line. Again, you can notice how new the area is, such a huge compliment to the airport over the 60's style architecture of yesteryear.

Upon checking in, I realized that I had left my cell phone in my car, so I took the OKC shuttle back to my parking spot to pick up my phone, seeing as I had plenty of time to spare, and then returned and went through security which was fairly busy at the time, most people being Southwest passengers. For the size of OKC, there is a pretty large operation of WN flights to PHX, MDW, STL, LAS, DAL, HOU, and I'm sure other cities as well.

Here is a glance at my flight schedule for my trip.

Upon entering the departures hall, it was nice to see that construction had made progress since the last time I was at the airport. I wish I had old pictures of the airport to show you, but I can only offer these.

After reaching the hall, I decided to go have a bloody mary at the cafe. Here is a picture of the new cafe in one of the departure halls. You can see the group in the foreground who was headed to CDG.

I'll have to admit, that bloody mary was pretty strong, so I went down to sit at Alliegent Air's departure quarters and relaxed. While I was there I took a picture looking down the departure hall back towards the security processing center.

Finally, our 737-500 (United Shuttle Livery) made its little way to the gate.

Cute little thing isn't it? I'm pretty sure it arrived from Chicago, but not for certain.

Finally it came out time to board, and as you can see, the delayed UAExpress flight was on the right side of our aircraft.

Honestly, I hate the older models of the 737. I think they have sort of a "dorky" look to them, but it gets you from point a to point b so who cares. I was seated in 17F (if I recall). Next to me sat two older ladies who didn't speak a word of english. They kept talking to me in Spanish, but I don't speak Spanish. We taxied out to the runway and the entire taxi they were holding on to their beads and praying.

Take off was uneventful and we were on our way to DEN.

You can see how dry we are out here in Oklahoma City. No wonder our state is burning like crazy.

The flight to Denver was around 1hr45min and of course, the descent into DEN was bumpy as usual. Upon arrival I was quite happy to see a BA777 and an LHA346. Asthetically, the A346 is beautiful!

Of course it was being prepared for a flight to FRA.

Our flight to SFO on a UA 777-200ER was late and didn't depart until some time past 6PM. Thus, it was rather dark, and I didn't get any good pictures in flight due to the fact that I was seated in 30A, which is an exit row on the 777, and did not have a window. Here is our flight being prepared for SFO at DEN.

I was tuned into Channel 9 on departure. We were 495 heavy and as we taxied, we pulled to a stop before entering the runway and sat for a while. That AWESOME whirring of the 777 PW engines slowly decreased and the engines were shut down. The captain came on and said that we had a mechanical problem and they were trying to get in contact with their SFO maintainence base to resolve the issue. After about 15 min, the pilot said that the mechanical problem had been "deferred." Whatever that means. And we followed Speedbird 218 heavy on departure. We lifted off the runway at DEN extremely fast and climbed right up to FL360 on our way to SFO. The first 20 min of the flight was very bumpy, but smoothed out over the mountains. (Sort of an oxy-moron).

I got a chance to talk with the flight attendant seeing as she was facing me at door 3L. It's interesting to note that some flight attendants don't really know a lot about the aircraft they are working on. Oh well. I listened to Channel 9 on approach, and the pilot advised that we would be making an "auto-land" at SFO, which was cool. Some people say that the autoland just plants the bird right on the ground, pretty hard. However, it felt no different than any other 777 landing I've had. Was smooth as silk, and no thrust reverse, or any that I could hear.

As far as coming home, I don't have much of a trip report to write seeing as I slept most of the way and didn't take any pictures. My flights home were on a 767-300 to DEN which was also going to IAD, and on a BAE aircraft of AWAC.

While I was at SFO I stayed at the W and got to meet some great A.netters. JeffSFO, WindowSeat (who I owe a ton a thanks to), and Superfly. We met at the XYZ bar at the W and Jeff and I got shitfaced, well, at least I did, and talked about everything you could imagine about airliners while drinking. Had a great blast guys!

Looks like you had a nice little weekend UAL. Too bad you didnt get pics of the return flight, esp the one coming to IAD, since we all know that's the best airport that UA has a hub at  Smile. Nice report.

Excellent report, UAL! Glad to see you had fun and moved past your not-so-hot Christmas. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, but it appears that that the LH A346 doesn't have a winglet. Am I correct on this?

LOL, I thought the same thing when I looked at the picture. But yes, there is a winglet there.

God, I know. Such an improvement....the old terminals looked like a bad acid trip at a 70's discotheque...with their mirrored low ceilings and the industrial speckled flooring. BLAH.

Excellent report Phil, OKC is REALLY shaping up beautifully now. Last i flew into OKC, was on AA back in March of 2005 and I could see it would be a huge improvement, planning an OKC trip out there in the spring.

Excellent pictures and jealous you got the 777. Lucky Lucky!

Alex
