Well Ill try to make this post as bias free as I can. First some background:
I am Mexican, Live in Mexico city and have been in the Mexicana frequent flier for years, basically they are my first choice always for this kind of trip but I have flown in United, Delta, AeroMexico and TACA. (this route).

I flew MEX-LAX nad back on Mexicana September 22 and 23 2005 and Alaska on Jan 7 MEX LAX and jan 17 LAX MEX.

Ill start first with Alaska since its more fresh in my memory.

I tried to book Mexicana but the fare was outrageous, my 2 kids my wife and I would have been 2500 USD for Cattle class !!!, so I began looking for all the options an luckyly I could find 4 seats in the Saturday January 7 at 6.45 AM (yeah a hell to wake up at 4 in the AM but the savings were worth it ) I ended paying 1650 USD.

The tickets they gave me were Internet tickets with the advantage that If I lost them I just could walk to the counter give my name provide my passport and Id have a seat.
I got early to MEX because in Mexico you never know how much traffic there is going to be (yeah even at 4 am!), So the process of getting our boarding passes is fast (our luggage was checked by security guys).
So we went to the "new "new" terminal (because they are always changing something!) the cold was amazing easily the check area and the sorrounding gates were at 4 to 6 degrees C, there was only a starbucks so we bought hot chocolate and some pastries.
We aboarded at 6.25 and it was really weird because they began boarding in random order (well First was announced before) but since I was in row 6 (the first one of cattle class I made the line and went into the conacting gate and the plane was closed!!!! and was chilly as hell but , they opened the door and in we went. The flight load was 100% not a miserable seat left unoccupied !!! ut we boarded quicly even for the random boarding and were set at 6.43 to go but there was some kind of trouble and they never told us what it was, we ended up leaving the gate at 7.15 !!! (darn the A320 of Mexicana leaves at 7 am and was 3 planes ahead of us in the take off queue !!!
We rolled and took off and made some weird maneuvers ( surelly to avoid the Mexicana A320 in the same direction!) since the 737 is a faster plane.

The plane was a 737 -700 with Aviation Partners winglets the flight took 3 hours and 23 minutes and the plane was clean the Flight attendants were mixed, 2 long in the tooth and 2 recent model ( I love this mixed crews because when the shit hits the fan the older FA are more calm and reasuring) I have been in 3 emergency situations and you are happy to be in company of experienced FAs.

We arrives at LAX ahead of the Mexicana A320 by 13 minutes but we were stopped by a taxiing plane sort of the gate and the MExicana got there first!! dang!!

Take off and landing was a greaser the flight was as smooth as being parked and the Pilot had good comunication.

The so called "food" was a egg with some potatos a weird tomato (actually not that bad) a muffin and fruits, the FA served a lot of juice and water....Nothing compared with AA where you feel in the middle of the Gobi Desert

The service was quick and corteous and non issue.

end of part 1 now the pics:

as you can see it was full ...

The seats are all leather and there is no IFE and First is clearly separated of the lower guys and there was a nice alaskan motiff.

Plane is clean ....

so called airline "food" much better than I expected...

Now the return part LAX-MEX on Alaska on Jan 17. the plane was announced to leave at 1025 am and left exactly at that time.

We arrived at LAX at 808 Am and procedded to make the ordeal of registering, on Alaska you can take 2 pieces of luggage no more than 25 kilos each if you go over it by a miserly 2 pounds a 25 buck penalty ensued, we were lucky since there were 4 of us we could take 8 pieces of lugage (which we did!! -advice never travel with your wife and leave her in a mall alone!!)
The ticket and boarding pass took too long!! why OH WHY?// because I learned I AM IN THE NO FLY LIST !!! WHAT!!! so they went to check my identity and after 10 minutes of "waiting" I was cleared ( That reminds me to sent some stupid letter to the NSA with a photo and some id papers so this wont happen again!)
The counter agent was MARVELOUS , she told us that plane had just 47 PAX so she gave us row 7 A and C and D and F so we had a spare seat between us..COOL !!!.
The fligt was very good and since the 737 was half load we took off like a rocket and made the AX MEX trip in 2 hours and 21 minutes !!! the landing was captain kangooro style but nothin real bad.
The service was very good again a mixed crew and courteous attitude, the 737 also had winglets and was very clean with leather seats and a decent seat pitch as you can see in the pics ther ewas plenty of space and I am 5.8 and my kid is 5.9 so in that regard the space is good.
Also things to notice is that there is space between the seat and the window so the window seat is confortable but the aisle is narrow contrary to the airbus where the window seat is pressed against the fuselage and the aisle is wider.

The food was 2 chiken creppes with mashed beans on top (yep I know it looks like cow pie but it was good).
Same thing plenty of beverages.
on both trips the luggage got to the customs area pretty fast.

All in all I was surprised by Alaska, I did not expect this service, punctuality and cleanliness, in my view they deserve a solid 9, why not a 10, because we left late and the boarding could have been more "traditional"
BTW on the return trip the pilots were not that comunicative but the FA made the emergency procedires show in English and spanish and all of them speaked spanish at least a 60%.

here are the pics:
going back down:

First class separation and Eskimo motiff

Our bird at LAX getting fueled and catered.

Check the seat space is actually decent Id say 32 inches but I could be wrong

My "kid"

Airline food...

Ill post the Mexicana experience tomorrow and give my comparison....

Ok here is the second part sorry for the delay ..been quite busy

I booked Mexicana to fly on Sept 23 MEX LAX and return next day, it was a quick bussiness trip.

So I booked the first flight departing at 7 am. so I woke up very early to avoid problems the fare was 346 USD$ round trip on cattle class (not bad at all!).
So I got there early and instructed to go to the dreaded gate 19..for those who do not know the gate 19 is the Twilight ZONE gate a gate that has like 4 doors and they send you there when there is no gate assigned to your flight.

After a while a lady told is Our plane would depart at gate 21, I saw just 8 other people there so I figured Most would still be at gate 19, but at 6.45 "quite late for a 7 am departure" I saw the Captain and the FO exit the airbridge and leave with their stuff jepessen and all..... mmmmhhhh

2 minutes later a Mexican Agent told us our flight had been canceled and return to gate 19 to be assigned seats in the next flight (at 8.20 AM).

So I went there and I was badly treated and they took my boarding pass and issued me another one, my original seat was 9C, my new seat was 29B the plane was full, I went bezerk and told the person there I woke up at 4 in the Am to get a lousy seat and the plane and most probably my meeting at L.A.??
She basically told me to be grateful I Got in the plane since the 8.20 plane was full.

I Told her "something could be done" I never mentioned my frecuenta status (FF miles etc etc) I just stood there with a face a very unslept person has.

Since I had more than one hour to spare I went to the Mexicana Booth to complain. First I changed my seat to 9F NO QUE NO? then I filled a complaint for the rude treatment and the cancelation they could not give a copy of my compliand so I felt my complaint was as good as toilet paper So i filed another and DEMANDED for the agent to sign it. They did (see photo)
She was courteous but the damage was done, she told me, my original flight had only 7 pax, and I told her that if a mexicana Rep had waked to us and told us that it is wasteful to fly a 30 tonne plane and burn 9 tons of fuel to fly 8 pax , and procedded to rebook us in the new plane with our SEATS UNCHANGED we would be happy since we know the Airline is a business, but we were treated like dolts and that is unnaceptable. hence my complaint, Icalled Mexicana afterwards and I havent recieved not even an Email so my toilet paper theory holds true.....

The plane was full the flight was good the plane clean, but the take off took like forever.....I guess we were a ton or less away from MTOW....
The pilots were informative and the service as always very good fast and courteous, they served a lot of spirits ( I dont drink) but It amazed me how many guys were getting loaded so early in the morning????
One thing I really hate is that if you are sound asleep the darn announcements are very loud and wake you up...
First the flight info
The electronic devices
then the filling of custom and migration forms
then the duty free stuff
then the decent.

cant they keep it quiet.....???

The seat space is much closer than Alaska I think is due to half an inch less and the seats that protude back a little more, see this poor guy, but the seats inmy case are a little more mushy and have a little more hip space, but make no mistake, you are still in cattle class.

The breakfast was Eggs with chilli sauce and smashed beans with chesse, very good (for airline food) and lots of juice....speedy service and refills as always, the cofee smelled good but I wanted to sleep so I passed.

As you can see the service with all the goodies make this a cramped place..

The flight was 3.32 minutes long we entered La from the west and landed at 24L, one thing I was surprised was the level of contamination leaving Mexico city Yuck!!!

So basically the flight was full, noisy, no chops, very good landing and nice music, quick departure and boarding, very helpful crew 2 guys and 2 women for us...
here check the photo of the cabin, I dont know but may its me or the highers and wider setas but it loks cramped but I did not feel it that bad!. then again at 5.8 I am not that tall so maybe for a 6.0 and over this culd be a problem.

Tomorrow Illl write down the back and my conclusions sorry but is 1 am here...

best regards TRB

I'll be honest with you. The Alaska report sucked. Very bad grammar (it felt like reading a telegram). But on the other hand you got many great pictures that make up for the bad grammar.

The MX report was way better written than the Alaska one, and also the pictures are very helpful and indeed make it a good report.

Regarding MX, I can confirm they give great food on board except for the red-eye MEX-CCS in which they give you a small piece of bread and 2 slices of ham and 2 of cheesem that means that you have to prepare your own sandwich! (that really sucked). On the right side, MX's fleet is excellent and puntuality is good in most cases.

Thanks for sharing your flight experiences in this forum.

Saludos desde Caracas,
Luis

I guess not everyone is as good at English as you and me are. Don't be so harsh, I bet he tried the best he could, and as long as you can understand what he is trying to say, its alright. If you dont like it, dont read it, simple as.

Did you care to read my whole post? I said the MX report was well written. So it was something isolated in the Alaska one that made it sound like a telegram.

Please explain the way to know how can I like something if I don't read it first? *Sigh*

Yes i certainly did read your whole post, still I was thinking you sounded sort of arrogant commenting the Mexican fellow's report.

Read the first couple of lines -> decide wether it meets your likings or not -> keep reading or stop. Its not hard *sighsigh*

btw. There's a grammatical fault in the quoted sentence  Wink

Nice trip report. It was really nice and interesting as to how you compared Mexicana and Alaska and yet you were very neutral and not biased like some people around here... Great job!

Luisde8cd,

There are several grammatical mistakes in your third paragraph. When writing in English, it is incorrect to write out numbers from one to ten. You should not write: "2 slices of ham and 2 of cheesem." It should say "two slices of ham and two slices of cheese", and there is no "m" after cheese. Also, you misspelled "puntuality", the correct way is "punctuality". Punctual contains a "c" in English, whereas in Spanish it is "Puntual".

  LatinPlane

edit: incorrect spelling of cheese.

Hmm ok, looks like now I have a click-free spell checker. Still my point stands that the Alaska report sounded like a telegram.

Looks like some people here can't stand a bit of constructive criticism.
