Scheduled Departure Time: 7:25

Check In: I arrived at a rather deserted Song check in area around 5:45am. After reaching an e-ticket machine, I scanned the bar code that was printed on my e-ticket. My reservation came up and I was shown a seat map of the aircraft. My original seat, 26A sounded good to me as there was no one seated in 26B. I clicked “continue” and a mostly blank screen came up marked with the term “EXITING.” I seem to be unable to get a friendly Delta ticket machine as I had similar problems last October. What did I ever do to them?! After controlling my homicidal urges, I calmly picked up my bag and walked over to another machine. The male agent behind the counter saw me do this and asked if everything was alright. I explained the situation and he said,
“Don’t worry, I’ll just check you in here. Where are you heading to today?”
“Boston.”
“That’s a drastic change in climate! Do you have any bags to check in today?”
“Nope, none today, only hand luggage.”
At this point I handed him my Flying Blue card,
“I have a quick question for you. I don’t think my frequent flyer number registered when I purchased the ticket, could you possibly add it please?”
“Absolutely! I just need to see your I.D.”
Once the process was complete, he handed me my boarding pass in a ticket jacket.
“If you ever have problems with the e-ticket machine, don’t hesitate to ask any of us behind the counter for help. We will be more than willing to help you out.”
“Thank you so much. I certainly will in the future.”
“Thanks for flying Song, happy holidays.”
I walked away with a smile on my face. This may be the first time that has ever happened in 15 years of flying Delta!

Security was a breeze as it took me a mere three minutes to complete. This is a sharp contrast to my 45 minute ordeal four days ago when I was flying out west. Therefore, I walked into the terminal a very happy man. Feeling jolly, I proceeded to a Starbucks and ordered an overpriced mug of caffeine with a fancy holiday name as there is nothing more refreshing at 6 AM. With the cup in hand I walked over to my gate and sat down with the plan of entertaining myself until boarding.

Boarding: Around 6:45 there was a pre boarding announcement which consisted of an explanation of baggage policies and boarding procedures. Five minutes later, a male flight attendant introduced himself and began the boarding process with rows 35 to 25. I headed towards the Jetway and picked up a pair of headphones which had been placed on the counter in a wooden basket. The gate agents were good enough to remind everyone to please take a pair of headphones as they boarded.

I was greeted at the door with a big smile by a flight attendant offering headphones to anyone who did not pick them up at the gate. We exchanged greetings and I walked down to the end of the 757. The first thing which hit me was the multitude of colors on this plane. Having flown so many Northwests, Continental, and Delta mainline flights recently, I had forgotten that a plane could be outfitted with a color other than blue or white. My seat was slightly stiff, but that tends to be the case with leather seats on planes. The load factor was relatively light today with most of the middle seats remaining empty in the rear of the aircraft.

The crew welcomed us on board a short while later and the main cabin door was closed just as the safety announcement was played. Today it was conducted by a “lassie” with a very heavy Irish accent who interspliced a few jokes for good humor. Once that was completed, we began our trek towards the runway with the company 757 heading to JFK in front of us.

The Flight: After a standard Pratt & Whitney take off, we soared into a brightly lit sky. Almost immediately, the PTVs were started up and I commenced playing around with it. I first flicked through all the channels and read the breakfast menu offered on today’s flight. Once that was done, I settled upon “The Today Show” on NBC as it helped pass the time. Since the middle seat was empty on today’s flight, I kept that PTV on the air show.

Annoyingly, the pilot came on just after take off and requested that all cabin crew remain seated as we were going to experience some turbulence. The seatbelt sign remained in the on position for close to an hour. While we did encounter a few mild bumps here and there, it was nothing compared to my Cleveland – Orlando flight a week ago where most of our drinks ended up splattered on the ceiling.

Once the seatbelt sign had been turned off, the crew began their duties, however, all of them descended on the front of the cabin and started service from their. This is where sitting in the rear of the aircraft on Song can be less than enjoyable. Service was a little bit on the slow side and they ran out of the smoked turkey bagel before they reached row 20. The lone male flight attendant was handing out drinks to the cabin while his colleagues waited in the front to bring the food carts down the aisle. Once he reached me, I asked for a Cran-apple and the cup was handed to me with a napkin. While he may have been in a rush, he did everything with a smile and never lost his composure.

About 15 minutes after the drink was served, the two flight attendants manning the food cart came by informing everyone that the turkey bagel sandwich was no longer an option as they had run out. I opted for the yogurt and granola which cost a mere $3. The food was nice and fresh and was, in my opinion, a good value for money.

Once I was done with the food I started playing around with the Audio on Demand which I thought was one of the best things about flying Song. Soon we began out descent into the Boston area and I settled one of my favorite Songs of all time for the rest of the flight, (the song was Coldplay’s Speed of Sound)

Arrival: Touchdown happened all too soon and we were on our way to the terminal.

We taxied to the rather newly built Terminal A used by Delta. Once our aircraft docked at the terminal, we disembarked with each cabin crew member bestowing upon us a “thank you for flying with us today.” Once out in the terminal, I proceeded towards Terminal C for my connecting flight operated by Continental. Sadly, this is where the pleasant part of my day ended, as I ended up on a hour and a half delayed USAirways flight to Philadelphia, a far cry from my Song flight up.

Check In: 9 (Agent was friendly and had a huge smile but that e-kiosk)
Boarding: 10 (Done by rows)
Seat: 7 (The colors, stiffness and the lack of headrest prevent a better score)
Food: 10 (Good choice at a good price with excellent quality)
Service: 9 (Enthusiastic crew who were light years ahead their counterparts at DL)
Entertainment: 10 (Could not ask for much more than what I got)
Arrival: 10 (No problems here)

Score: 65/70 = .928
SONG scored a 93%

Verdict: I have never been a Delta fan and normally detest most of the decisions their management has made over the years, but I have to say congratulations this time! Song was one great experience as from start to finish. I enjoyed my flight immensely and sincerely wish they were keeping the product. While I was not expecting much from Song, I received an above and beyond flight which was more than I could imagine. I don’t think I have ever walked off a Delta aircraft with a smile in my 15 years of flying them. Once again, congratulations Delta, you certainly had a winner here. I just hope the product does not get diluted too much with its integration into mainline.

Check In: As my ERJ taxied by the jetBlue terminal, I was mesmerized by all multicolored aircraft. Once our aircraft was parked, I walked out of the CO area and headed for the jetBlue check in counters. I had checked in last night but had encountered some problems with the printer so I thought I would utilize an e-machine and have it re-print my boarding pass. However, this was not to be. I typed in my conformation code and a slip of paper came back out with a big “OPPS! – You have already checked in, please see an agent.” Naturally, I proceeded to the other line and waited for my turn to come. I approached an agent who was pleasant but far from friendly.
“I tried to print my boarding pass and got this instead.”
“Let me have that. Where are you heading to today?”
“Orlando.”
She handed me my boarding pass a few seconds later. It was interesting that the machines print out a regular shaped boarding pass but the agents handed these ‘receipt’ like things, something I had only seen on AirTran so far. With that in hand I proceeded towards the gates.

I grabbed a sandwich and sat down in a corner where I could take pictures of passing aircraft. This was the first time I have seen an ERJ-190 up close and I must say that I can not wait to fly this beauty.

Boarding: Around 17:00 boarding commenced for passengers needing assistance which took little time. My row was one of the first to be called so I snagged a pair of headsets and walked down the jetway.

I was greeted at the door by a male flight attendant offering headphones. After refusing them, I walked to the back of the plane and sat down in my slightly rigid yet still serviceable seat.

Once boarding was completed, the cabin door was closed at exactly 17:25 with the middle seat next to me empty. The girl in the aisle seat and I looked at each other and let out a sigh of relief. The captain came on the PA to inform us of some delays due to air traffic holds but told us we should be on our way shortly. He also informed us that it was the co-pilots birthday today and we should all wish him a happy birthday. We backed out a few minutes later and took off into the clear night sky with VH1 playing on my PTV.

The Flight: Once we were airborne, I started flicking through the channels to find something of interest. I ended up watching “Iron Chef” on the Food Channel despite the PTV cutting out at least six times as we climbed to our cruise altitude.

Food and drink service commenced a short while later. The flight attendants broke apart and started serving snacks by asking everyone what they would like. I opted for a bag of Blue Chips which was handed to me. Once that was done, each crew member started taking drink orders on a piece of paper. The flight attendant appeared a few minutes later handing everyone a plastic cup of ice served along with a full can of their selected beverage. However, this is where the service stopped, the flight attendants were not seen for the rest of the flight until they came to collect trash nearly 90 minutes later.

Shortly before arrival, our pilot came on the PA to announce that the birthday boy, our co-pilot, would be landing the plane today and he promised he would make it the best landing of our lives.

Arrival: Touchdown was one of the smoothest I have ever experienced on any aircraft and apparently the rest of the plane thought so too as the applause started radiating through the cabin as we slowed down. We arrived on the outermost runway in Orlando, which resulted in a bit of taxi time to our gate but everything went by relatively smoothly at this point in time. On our way out each crew member smiled and wished us a pleasant stay in Orlando. The co-pilot was standing by the front door and seemed genuinely embarrassed with all the comments he was getting from us passengers. I decided not to torture the poor guy so I just smiled and said “great landing.” Navigating through Orlando with no checked in bags is fantastic. I was off the plane and in my car heading to Daytona Beach less than 30 minutes after getting off the aircraft.

jetBlue 437
Check In: 8 (Agent was efficient with a forced smile but that was about it)
Boarding: 10 (Done by rows)
Seat: 7 (Grey leather was a bit stiff, but the legroom was great but headrest are needed)
Food: 8 (It’s free and there is a choice but a second round would have been appreciated)
Service: 8 (Friendly when I saw them but they congregated in the galley too much)
Entertainment: 8 (Need some music options and the continuous video feed cut out was annoying)
Arrival: 10 (Nothing to talk about here)

Score: 59/70 = .842
jetBlue scored a 84%

Verdict: On the whole jetBlue was not a bad experience at all and I am happy I got to try them out. However, I do not think they were anything special as I found my flight to lack the small details which could have made it excellent. A second round of snack offerings would have boosted the score significantly. As the flight was close to three hours, I see no reason a second round could not have been made, especially since some of the legacy carries I fly do that on shorter flights! Another annoying aspect of the jetBlue experience was the fact that the PTV cut out at least 25 times during the flight due to “aircraft movement.” While this may not seem like a big deal, the PTV never once cut out on a certain green competitor. Also I am looking forward to some music on future jetBlue flights as that is one thing I seriously missed on this flight. In the end, what really let my opinion of jetBlue slip was the cabin crew. They were friendly but they congregated in the galley too much during the most of the flight. This is something I expect from disgruntled legacy carrier flight attendants, not jetBlue. However, I feel I owe it to jetBlue to give them another chance and not base my opinion on solely this flight.

Great trip report! I have had the exact same experiences on both Song and Jet Blue and personally prefer Song better!

What jetBlue does is offer the standard headphones which I used for free. There is an option where you can pay $1 and upgrade to a better set of headphones which have better sound quality and are more comfortable to wear.

No immediate plans to fly Southwest anytime soon, however I will be flying AirTran tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how they are in comparison to Song and jetBlue.

Another great report from you, reading and watching the pictures was very interesting for me since I have never flown on both airlines (well, I flew on DL but never on Song).

Very impressive to see what kind of entertainment both carriers are offering on this rather short flight. I really like the "My Playlist" function, actually there is no need to carry a mp3 player with you when you are flying on Song.

The only thing I don't like are JetBlue's boarding passes, they should give out proper boarding passes instead of these cheep looking supermarket receipts.

Hopefully you'll be lucky enough to be on an XM-equipped plane, and they won't be doing another fleetwide software upgrade that has the thing shut down.

And keep your headphones (if they're single-pronged), a set of earbuds on AirTran will set you back $3.00

Not too sure there is much to report, but if you want one a quick picture report, I can quickly set one up.

I thought the same thing. However the boarding passes issued when you check in online actually looks like a real boarding pass.

Thankfully the XM Radio was working on my flight yesterday.

Anosh I have good news and bad news.

Good News:
Your pictures are excellent, especially the one of Manhattan Island.

Bad News:
Coldplay is vastly overrated, X&Y is an album that gets more love that it should and "Speed of Sound" is the epitome of what I'm taking about it. Shame on you.

Great report. I agree that Song actually has a superior product than Jetblue (I have flown transcon with both). Song also has better food options because you can actually buy meals on Song. Jetblue are free snacks but you cannot really make a meal out of snakcs.

Jetblue is a bit of a hype. I have said in many forums that Jetblue's product are just standard international economy products (minus food). I believe that they only get good reviews because most US airlines are pretty rubbish. Maybe it's just me who doesn't think Jetblue is great, but then I have been used to airlines such as CX and VS.

Interesting comment. I actually find the reverse is true. I have had a lot more programming cuts on Song than on Jetblue. This is especially true when flying across those desert states (like Idaho, Nebraska, even Nevada) The TV signals on Song will just stand still. B6's entertainment however, only freezes when the aircrafts do turns.

Just a comment...sure the JetBlue people don't come around for a "second round" but I've found all you have to do is go back and ask them and they will give you whatever you want (even in large quantities). On my flight back from NYC to SAN (5.5 hours), for example, I went back there after the initial service and got 3 bags of chips and a coke (not including the transcon snack pack we got over New Mexico). They even encourage you to ask for more via the PTV's. Granted this is no excuse for inattentivness but I think their policy is still pretty good...

I grew up in Asia and Europe so I think it is fair to say we both have high standards when it comes to flying. However considering I have been satisfied with NW for the last few years, I think my standards have diminshed drastically in the last couple of years.

Thanks for the idea, but since I am normally seated near a window it can be difficult to walk to the galley especially if your seatmate has emptied the entire contents of her hand luggage onto her tray table. Getting out would be more hassle than it is worth. However if I am seated in the aisle, I will gladly follow your suggestion.

Excellent report! Not many times do you get a DL or Song ticket agent that isn't very jolly. It's when you get to the gate and on the plane where it gets bad. I had high hopes of B6 coming into CVG when DL dies, and now you put a little bit of a damper on those hopes, great report, none the less.

Nah, song is going away soon and B6 is adding 100 XM radio channels and on red eyes have spa kits and all that stuff. Too bad they don't do that on FL runs though. Still B6 is getting better than it already is on board plus they have 12 more tv channels than song does.
