Visiting Munich Terminal 2 (= the Lufthansa terminal) was already on my ‘to do-list’ for quite some time, and I finally decided to do so on 15 July, 2005. A few weeks after I had booked my ticket, forum member Chris (Avro) decided to join as well, so I was looking forward to a nice trip in good company!

About the trip

Ever since the bankruptcy of Sabena in November 2001, Lufthansa managed to gain more and more market share on the Belgian market (for information: LH will offer eight more weekly flights between Brussels and Munich on weekdays, bringing the total of weekly flights to 53 between both cities or eight daily flights on weekdays). Lufthansa also flies 9x daily between Brussels and Frankfurt. In total, Lufthansa will offer 195 weekly flights between Brussels and Germany in the Summer season of 2006 (!!!).

As Munich is becoming a very important hub for Lufthansa, I really wanted to explore the new Lufthansa Terminal 2, to check out the facilities for transfer passengers etc. The only thing I can say is: ‘wow’. Terminal 2 is clean, looks splendid, there is enough place (you don’t feel cramped at all), and you can get free coffee and tea just about everywhere (offered by Lufthansa).

Brussels – Munich – Brussels on Lufthansa and Eurowings, Friday 15 July 2005

Booking the ticket

I used Lufthansa’s easy to use online booking facility. Booking the ticket only took a few minutes, and an e-mail confirmation was immediately sent to my e-mail address. I also had to pay the 20 EUR booking fee, which is a rip off in my opinion. I believe they lowered their booking fee to 10 EUR in the meantime.

Telephone check-in

As I would only be arriving one hour before departure, at 06:00, I decided to check-out their telephone check-in service the evening before. After about ten minutes of classical music, it was my turn. The person who had to check me in was very difficult to understand (my guess is that he was originating from Suriname, judging from the accent).

When I told him I wanted to check-in, he reacted a little strange. He first told me that it wasn’t necessary, that I could just proceed to the airport the next day (if this is what you tell your customers, why bother to offer telephone check-in??). So I told him I wanted to reserve my seat already, to which he reacted that it wasn’t necessary as I had already booked a ticket (huh??). In the end, he finally seemed to get my point, and reserved seat 10A for me. I thanked him, and put the phone down being a little confused.

Brussels, Friday 15 July 2005

I arrived at 06:00, and proceeded immediately to the Lufthansa check-in counters where a very friendly lady of Flightcare checked me in. I asked her whether Flightcare was planning to strike (a strike was announced), to which she replied that the unions were still negotiating with the management, and that nothing could be excluded yet.

Anyway, I was happy to be on this early flight as no problems were foreseen in the early morning.

Chris had already arrived one hour before me, and was waiting for me at our gate. I received my ticket for the return flight as well, and after a short queue at the ticket control (no control of identity cards, as this is a Schengen flight), I was greeted by a very lengthy queue at security (as usual). Those queues are unacceptable, and I hope that BIAC will find a solution (due to those lengthy queues, SN Brussels Airlines had to raise the minimum check-in time before your flight from 30 to 40 minutes, as too many people were missing their flight). Securair announced in the meantime that 150 new people will be hired, to reduce the length of the queues.

I met Chris at our gate, and after a short walk through the A-Pier, it was time to proceed to our gate as boarding was about to be announced.

We were welcomed with a smile when we entered Papa Charlie, and were offered a large newspaper selection (including high quality newspapers like De Standaard). I believe that also the Captain was welcoming the passengers, although I can’t really remember anymore. Perhaps Chris can confirm?

Today’s flight was almost empty, with only a few passengers in the 7 rows of Business class and about 30 passengers in Economy Class. I was surprised when I found out that 10A was an exit row seat. Legroom was good of course, and so was the comfort of the seat.

The cabin crew welcomed us in three languages (German – English – Dutch), and although we were ready on time for pushback, I noticed through the window that there was a problem. The headset of the guy who had to assist the tugdriver pushing us back didn’t work apparently, so we had to wait until the pushback of the TAP A319 on our left side was completed, so that the headset of the person assisting the TAP could be used for our aircraft.

Also the Captain made an announcement in the meantime explaining the problem. This was also the last time unfortunately that we heard anything from the flightdeck.

The TAP A319 on our left side:

We pushed back 15 minutes late, and taxied to Runway 25R for departure. The pilot was clearly in a hurry, as we were already airborne seven minutes after the beginning of our pushback!

The service started shortly afterwards. Although the service wasn’t really done with a smile (like I’m used to get on SN Brussels Airlines), it was correct, professional and friendly.

We got the standard Lufthansa snack, consisting of two miniscule sandwiches and two drinks. I opted for a glass of still water, and a coffee.

Sandwich was nice, OK for a 1h flight. Better a small sandwich, in comparison with those snack mixes (peanuts, pretzels etc.) certain airlines serve these days.

Almost immediately after I had finished my snack, the flight attendant came over to me to clear my tray, which was nice as I could now read my newspaper in a comfortable way.

Cruising on the way to Munich:

The rest of the flight was uneventful. The cabin crew announced the connections in Dutch, English and German, and we touched down shortly afterwards on German soil.

Start of our descent:

Short finals:

And touch down:

Entering our stand, next to an Austrian Airlines A320:

Chris, being a real photographer, wanted to get a glimpse of the cockpit, which was kindly allowed by the cabin crew member who was greeting the passengers in front of the aircraft. We could take a few pictures, thanked the crew, and left the aircraft.

Spotting at Munich

We decided to go to the viewing terrace at Terminal two, which offers good views although you can only see about 50 % of the stands. The glass in front of you makes both photography and registration spotting difficult (unless the aircraft taxi right in front of you).

More information about the viewing area can be found here: http://www.munich-airport.de/EN/Area...esucherterrasse_Skywalk/index.html

So we proceeded to the visitors hill, which only takes 5 minutes by train. The views from here are splendid, but it’s in the open air (so not recommended when it’s raining outside).

A Lufthansa A340-300, bound for the United States:

An EL AL B777-200 to Tel Aviv:

A Sibir Airlines B737-500:

More information about the visitor’s hill: http://www.munich-airport.de/EN/Area...cherpark/Besucherhuegel/index.html

After a few hours, the sun started to burn so much that we decided to go back airside. A good idea, as the views from Terminal Two are good as well (although keeping an eye on both runways is impossible). This also gave us the opportunity to explore the Terminal, and relax in the comfortable seats, while drinking a free coffee, offered by Lufthansa!

Terminal Two really impressed me, and I wouldn’t hesitate for one second to connect through MUC whenever I fly LH in the future.

A few pictures, taken before we boarded:

And guess who was taking a picture over here  Wink:

I decided to board through the back of the aircraft, where I was greeted by a very friendly flight attendant. This flight was almost totally full, I estimate that about 95% of the seats were filled.

The 3-3 seating LH and EW have in their BAe’s is of course a sensitive subject for our German friends  Wink, but… I have to admit that those seats were actually very comfortable, more comfortable than certain B737’s and A320’s I’ve flown up to now. I’m 1m93, but managed to sit in a comfortable position almost without touching the seat in front of me (!!). Perhaps I was seated in a row with more legroom than the others… The seats were comfortable as well, with lot’s of support. A disadvantage however is the lack of space in the overhead bins (those are not designed for 15 additional passengers). Also the narrow aisle was a little annoying.

As you can see: my knees barely touched the seat in front of me:

There was a bus waiting as well to go to Brussels  Wink:

We were parked next to D-AVRO, quite a funny registration:

An announcement was made to wish us a very nice evening, and to welcome us on board. All passengers were on board in the meantime, the doors were closed, and the engines being started. The safety briefing started when we were off blocks, and a long taxi (12 minutes) to Runway 26 started.

Taxiing to Runway 26, with a Lufthansa A300 in the background rolling down the runway:

We were airborne at 19:30. I was still convinced that I wouldn’t have to hurry to catch my train back home. Little did I know that bad weather was expected.

…and airborne:

The cabin crew started distributing miniscule cheese sandwiches. They were offered with a smile however! I had a red wine as well. Always nice to relax during a flight with a glass of wine!

A picture of the cabin:

The Captain came on the PA at 20:10. He welcomed us “on board of this British Aerospace 146-300 to Brussels”. The bad news followed: we had to avoid some heavy thunderstorms, which would increase the flight time. He also provided us with some information about the routing, altitude, speed, etc., wished us a nice evening and thanked us for flying with Lufthansa – Eurowings.

There were indeed some dark clouds coming up, and at a certain point, we even rotated 360 degrees to avoid a thunderstorm cloud.

A few pictures showing the weather circumstances:

Leaving the thunderstorms behind us:

I was glad when we finally started our descent, but feared for my train connection. We continued our approach, and touched down at 20:48 (my train was leaving at 21:04). Those who know the A-Pier at Brussels (for Schengen flights) know that you need about 15 minutes to go from the Pier to the Terminal, so I had already anticipated taking the next train.

Starting our descent:

Final approach for Runway 25L, with a popular spotting location below us:

…and touch down:

I thanked the crew for the very nice flight, and to my surprise, we had to leave the jetbridge using the stairs downstairs, where a bus was waiting for us. I managed to jump on the first bus, right before the doors closed. We were on our way to the drop-off point near the exit (remember: there is no passport control for Schengen flights). So I ran through the luggage carrousels, the arrivals hall, and down the stairs where I managed to jump on the train which had just started closing its doors!

Conclusion

Both flights on Lufthansa and Eurowings exceeded my expectations. The service was very friendly, the snacks OK for a 1h flight, comfort acceptable and Munich is an excellent airport. I wouldn’t hesitate to fly Lufthansa again, although the high airport taxes for a connection in Munich or Frankfurt make LH quite expensive in comparison with the cheapest fares offered by the competition. Also the large newspaper selection and the complimentary cup of coffee were appreciated in Munich.

Also thank you to Avro for the excellent day we had in Munich!

Regards
Frederic

Hi Frederic,

Thanks for the detailed report, reading it and watching the pictures was great!

As for the 3-3 seat layout, it simply sucks when the plane is fully booked but ist is actually ok when you can leave the middle seat empty. The worst is when you end up on the middle seat, that happened to me once on a flight from DUS to LHR with Craphansa because I arrived too late at the check-in.

By the way, fellow A.netter DTManiac and I flew also on D-AEWQ approximately two weeks ago (ZRH-DUS). Actually I was hoping for a plane in the "old school" Eurowings livery but instead we got the new Lufthansa Regional livery.

I am still asking myself why EW isn't getting rid of these BAe146s. When I was still working for EW, I saw in the daily flight reports that these planes had frequently technical problems and exactly the same experience did DTManiac and I make in ZRH two weeks ago, our flight was late because the crew had to change the planes in DUS before coming to ZRH, the original scheduled plane had technical problems with the landing gear. It must cost a boatload to maintain these planes and I will not even think about the passengers who are suffering from the delays (I was at home after midnight instead of 22:31h and it annoyed the crap out of me).

Ok, time for me to fly on a proper airline and a proper plane, I am off to DTW on NW (A333) tomorrow. Big grin

Good TR, enjoyed it!

What was that LY 772 doing in MUC?
Thought they operate their TLV-MUC-TLV run with the 738 normally.
Was it just an exception? Can anyone clarify?

last minute equipment changes are pretty regular for LY, their TLV-ZRH-TLV services are scheduled to be operated by 737/8s, however they send a 752, 762 or 772 every now and then.

Good TR Frederic, as usual

I rank MUC Terminal Two (the only terminal in MUC I've been to so far) as one of the best, if not the best terminal I've even been to so far.

The biggest difference in my opinion is the narrow aisle. However, as you say, I wouldn't like to be stuck in the middle seat of a 3-3 BAe146!

No idea, the only thing I remember is that the aircraft rotated extremely fast, so fast that it must have been practically empty. Compare the LY B772 with the LH A343: both pictures were taken from the same spot! Even when you consider the fact that an A343 is a slow climber, the difference was too big.

First of all I'd like to thank Fred for doing this wonderful report. You are writing in a very nice way. I liked it a lot. It brought me back a lot of good memories.

As far as I remember there was indeed the captain or the F/O greeting the passengers. The crew seemed friendly.

I only got one drink and the sandwich you can see on the picture with the red sticker. When the F/A came at my place she just gave me a glass of water and the sandwich that's all. Then when I tried to tell her that I wanted to drink something else.... She was gone already. But as Fred said, for such a short flight you don't need a lot and I didn't care. BTW what is the thing you had in on the left of your sandwich ??

One free coffee ??? No no no, we drank a lot of them. I don't remember how much but we had quite a lot of coffee and tea . And as Fred said, the terminal of Lufthansa is great. With free newspapers everywhere and free coffee and tea. It is very clean and the staff is friendly (or at least seems friendly) as well.

For me it was the first time I flew in a 3-3 Avro and I must say I was positively surprised. The space we had was normal like in other planes. I didn't feel more cramped.

On that flight we went very close to heavy thunderstorms as Fred explained. It was very impressive to see those huge black/blue clouds from that close. And suddenly during the flight we slowed down adopted a slight nose down attitude and made a 360° (with a moderate rate of turn). It was the first time I experienced that and it was quite funny. It seemed like we were trapped in the bad weather clouds and were looking for a escape

You were sitting in row 10, which is under the wing? The overhead bins are smaller under the wing, as the wing construction is more or less going through the cabin. The overhead bins are much bigger in front of and behind the wing.

Keep on posting your high quality reports, I like them very much!

Hi Frederic!
Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a detailed and enjoyable trip report.  Smile It certainly contains a little irony that - from the impression one gets while browsing the forums - people from other countries appreciate flying LH and their affiliates much more than us Germans.

The story surrounding your attempt to check-in by telephone sounds a little ambiguous (but funny nonetheless) - "Why do you want to check-in by telephone, you can just go to the airport!" LOL, great advice by a guy working at the phone check-in hotline. I guess the old adage is true that you get monkeys if you pay peanuts. Big grin

I know, but I was referring to the overhead bins in general on the BAe146/Avro RJ: space is already restricted when you fly a BAe146/Avro RJ in the normal configuration (2-3). On almost all full SNBA flights I've taken till now, I noticed several people whose handluggage didn't fit anymore in any of the overhead bins (so the f/a's had to look for another place to stow the luggage of those passengers). With +/- 15 additional seats in those aircraft, you are creating even more problems for people with handluggage.

Quoting Nonrevman (Reply 13):
BRU certainly has some long terminal structures although this is a nice airport.

I especially like the fact that it is never really busy (always enough place to sit down,...). The only real problem at the moment is the long queues you often get at security, but a solution is in the make if we may believe Securair (responsible for security screening at BRU).

Quoting TriStar500 (Reply 14):

That's fully correct: most people I know really like LH, and so do I (up to now, at least  Wink). I had a very interesting conversation with a passenger on a recent SNBA flight from CPH to BRU about Lufthansa. She explained to me how she liked LH, and to be honest, I fully agreed with her opinion! Flying LH from BRU is just so convenient (15 daily departures to MUC/FRA, with plenty of connecting possibilities!). No other airline (except for the direct flights offered by for example SN) gives us as much flexibility as LH does.

NWA kicks ass! They gave me and a friend an upgrade to World Business Class and dropped us off in DTW after making us utterly drunk in the 9 hours flight time. What do you want more?  Wink When our friend who is currently working in Detroit picked us up at the airport, he said immediately: "Guys, both of you are smelling like a brewery". I am glad that the immigration officer didn't say anything. Big grin

I think I will write a trip report about this eventful weekend, a friend took many pictures during the flight, during our daytrip to Canada and of course also from the Superbowl. But at first I have to recover from drinking countless bottles of beer in the last few days. Big grin

There was even a Lufthansa bitchfest. During boarding I gave my friend a clap on the back and said rather loud: "Gut das wir uns für Northwest entschieden haben, Shithansa hätte uns niemals ein Upgrade gegeben". Everyone in the jetbridge was like: "Shithansa, do you refer to Lufthansa? Hehehehe". Of course the Shithansa jokes continued during the flight.  rotfl   rotfl   rotfl

I was several times in MUC T2 the last 2 years and I agree, especially after my last CDG experience, it is a high class airport for connecting pax.
But nevertheless remind some flights on classic Sabena airlines years ago before the LH stand alone situation on STR-BRU flights.
Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Markus (FLIEGER67)

That's true indeed. CDG Terminal 1 is crap of course, but I like CDG2F however (although MUC T2 must be the best Terminal I've ever visited).

Great report!

The only thing I can say is: ‘wow’. Terminal 2 is clean, looks splendid, there is enough place (you don’t feel cramped at all), and you can get free coffee and tea just about everywhere (offered by Lufthansa).

I agree with you. Terminal 2 is the nicest of any airport I have ever been to. The only thing I didn't like was that smoke. I found it even worse than in FRA.

We were parked next to D-AVRO, quite a funny registration:

Haha, I saw D-AVRO when I was in MUC, and also thought it was funny.

Out of curiosity: what do you mean with "that smoke"? I didn't notice any smoke... For in case you are talking about a certain smell in the Terminal: I can't remember having smelled anything special as well...

@Mark: glad to see you again in the trip reports forum, it's been some time since your last posting at airliners.net I guess?

Regards
Frederic

I meant people being allowed to smoke out in the open (not in smoking rooms). I know this is common in European airports, but it seemed to bother me more in MUC than the other ones I have visited.
