April 13
ORD-MEM
NW 727

I had a free ticket on NW, so I decided to use it to fly back home to BHM for Easter. I usually prefer to fly DL to BHM b/c there's usually more flights and a better selection of planes (i.e. planes I prefer to fly). Anyway, I got to the NW counter a little early to increase my chances of getting an emergency exit seat. Luckily no one else seemed to have this idea, so I ended up with an emergency exit aisle (15C I believe). When I got to the gate, I noticed that the NW 727 was much shinier than the other one going to MSP (I think). It almost looked new. Unfortunately, the interior was not in such good condition. Some of the seats actually had holes in them. A NW pilot was seated in 15C, and thank goodness, no one was in 15B. Service during the flight included a can of Diet Pepsi but no snack. There was almost no turbulence.

NW ARJ

This connecting flight was running a little late, so I had a little time to roam around the Memphis airport. I don't know if any of you have been there, but it leaves much to be desired. Most of the concourses are really dark with low ceilings. The architecture is definitely not modern. And to make things worse, the dining selections are extremely limited for an airport of its size. Charlotte and Cincinnati are much better.

I was excited to be flying the Mesaba ARJ (aka Avro85). The good thing about them is that they are meant to hold 85 passengers, but NW's only seat 69. That means every seat has at least 33 inches of legroom. Service during this flight included a can of Diet Pepsi and a small package of pretzels. I thought that it was a little strange to get pretzels on this flight that lasted 50 minutes and to get nothing (as far as food was concerned) on the hour-forty-five-minute flight from ORD to MEM. Whatever. For those of you who have never been on an ARJ, it makes some strange noises during take-off and the initial decent. I suppose the loudest were the wheels retracting and descending.

DL 757 new new color scheme

I was originally booked on NW making a stop in MEM before continuing on to ORD. However, the flight to MEM was delayed so much that it would have caused me to miss my connection. The NW agent rebooked me on a DL flight leaving at 6:50. Since it was already 6:00 pm, I figured it was leaving in 50 minutes. But when I got to the DL counter and saw the departures monitor, I realized that 6:50 flight was at 6:50 am the next morning. I asked the DL agent if there were any more seats to on the flight leaving for ATL at 6:25pm and the connecting flight to Chicago. There were plenty to ATL but only one first class to Chicago. I ran back to the NW counter and had the agent print me a FIM in order for DL to upgrade me. Thankfully he did it, and I sprinted back to DL with the documentation.

The short flight to ATL was on a 757 in the new new livey. This time the interior looked just as new as the exterior. All the seats had gray leather headrests. For some reason, DL decided that it is no longer possible to serve drinks from BHM to ATL. Granted, it's a short flight, but I used to always get something on Eastern and even Delta a few years ago. I'm surprised they didn't even offer Fastbreak service (a choice of water, lemonade, or cranberry juice). Oh well.

I was disappointed there was no meal on this flight, but I understood since it was pretty late in the evening. I was in seated in 1D about 2 feet from the video screen. There was a bottle of water at my seat when I got on, and the flight attendant took my drink order just after I sat down. I'm always glad when a video is shown, and this time it was a CNN program, a short golf documentary (yawn), and an episode of Friends. Other than a few minutes right before landing, the flight was turbulence free. Despite the fact that there was no meal, flight attendants came around and asked me three times if I wanted a snack and 4 times if I wanted something to drink. I was so spoiled. This never happens in coach. I almost forgot- this aircraft did not have a Business Elite section. I'm pretty sure the 762 is not used for any trans-Atlantice flights, so it only had a regular first class with pretty regular seats which were outlined in leather and were only slightly wider than coach seats.

The Avro was only worth 6/10? Wow I thought the newness and the legroom would have given that a higher score.

I forgot to mention that the "man" in the seat in front of me on the Avro from MEM-BHM never turned off his cell phone and answered two calls during the flight (one right before take-off and one while we were landing). I think I would have given the flight a higher rating than 6 if one of the flight attendants had asked him to turn it off. However, that didn't happen. Some of the other passengers were giving the man nasty looks, but he didn't seem to notice or care. I guess one of the passengers told an FA about the call, but the man had hung up before she could get to his seat. IMO, she should have at least reminded him why he needed to have the phone turned off and made sure he didn't use it again. We could have crashed!

Just a note.
Although I always do what instructed by the crew, there is no hard proof that cell phones interfere with the airplanes communications devices. When word of this got out nearly a year ago, I've noticed more and more people talking on the airplane.

Please turn off the phones,
Be curteous to other flyers who respect the wishes of the airlines.
