alert  checkeredflag Here we go, my very first trip report has arrived to a start. I promised it in a precedent thread where I asked which is the best way to get to Australia from Italy and now I’m back…. Unfortunately the time runs fast… too fast as always. It has been really a great experience which I’d advice to anyone.
My first intentions were to land in Melbourne, move in the east coast, surfing a little after have worked and enjoy the rest of the time.
Actually I arrived in MEL but cause of the weather ( that in early October is still pretty cold) I moved very soon to Sydney and in a Surf camp along the coast till Byron Bay. It wasn’t really a great start because of my travelling alone without knowing enough English but I knew it and I moved on. I went back to Sydney, worked 2 months, made up a wonderful family in my Hostel and did plans for the remaining month and a half of travel around OZ.
In my dreams there was to see Uluru so I managed to go there after the trip in the east coast. I flew from Sydney to Cairns, came back to SYD down to the East coast stopping in the Whitsundays islands, Fraser Island, Noosa and Surfers paradise. In Sydney I took the Indian Pacific to Adelaide and right afterwards the Ghan to Alice Springs. My wonderful Uluru trip began and it has been the most amazing sight of my trip if not of my life. I loved it. It’s just sad to think what the native population has become… I moved back by bus to Adelaide with a group stopping time to time, stayed in Adelaide a couple of days and took the Indian Pacific again for a 2day trip to Perth. Enjoyed a lot the week in Perth and took the flight back to Italy from Perth. When I arrived in Perth I realized how good my EK choice has been because if would have chosen Austrian I would have been forced to go back to Sydney or Melbourne to return in Italy so… Thanks Emirates.
Let’s start my trip which I will post in two different threads because of I’ve put a lot of Photos.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0358.jpg
this was a part of my ticket… I was really excited a lot when I got it because it meant my first intercontinental trip and almost 4 months away from home alone.

My parent were working the day of my departure so I had to get in Rome Fiumicino with my own forces. I live in a small town of 22.000 called Cesenatico (from here it takes about the same time to get in Rome or in Milan) which has barely a train station but I managed to find a long (for Italian standards) connection to Bologna and then a good Eurostar 480 IIRC which was more comfortable than the ETR 500 I arrived in Rome Termini and took the Leonardo Express train to Fiumicino Airport. I arrived in Fiumicino 3 hours before my flight took off to be sure that even with a late train I’d have been there on time. I had already booked my seats so everything was ok. I waited the opening of the check in, left my registered baggage and looked for some time at the planes taxiing in front of me eating some sandwiches before reaching my gate 32 terminal C.
A Yemenia A332

Eventually I reached my gate after the Skybridge or whatever it is called which is a small train that took 2 minutes to reach the satellite where Gate 32 is located. While on the train at 2.30 PM I saw EK 773 taxiing to the gate and I thought it should have been late and I was right but just 45 minutes (5 pm instead of 4.15pm) and we arrived in DXB on time.

This is one reason because I love flying… Look at that clouds… I simply feel free
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0387.jpg

My first meal: salads fruits and the cake were awesome, the Arabic pepsi isn’t bad and the only defect of the main course was a not properly cooked rice… but I loved it. My first meal at 11000 meters. The highlight was an Arabic meat roll which was served apart.

Dubai by night ( I haven’t been that lucky, in my whole trip only the last landing was with daylight)
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0395.jpg

I had 10 hours to wait in DXB so I walked around in the luxurious airport with palms and gold anywhere I bought 20 cigarettes for 1,60 Euro and a pair of very cheap shorts that in Italy you get for 60 Euro, I slept some time in the lounge area and when the daylight arrived I watched lots of EK planes landing or taking off waiting on my flight.

The good lounge area at Dubai airport even if the seats looks more comfortable than they actually are

Look at that emergency “stairs” if I’d be a ramp worker I’d use it every day… Funny
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0397.jpg

Here we have the star of my trip, one of the reasons that helped my EK choice, the airplane which is very hard to get on… Ladies and Gentlemen’s EMIRATES A340-500. When I checked airfleets at my arrival I was pleased with another surprise… A6-ERJ is the newest member of the EK A345 fleet… and at the time of my flight

Quote:
First flight date 28/09/2005

Just 8 days before of my flight… eyepopping  WOW The plane was unbelievably neat and clean, really a pleasure to fly on.
I know the 777’s have better economics and are magnificent airplanes… But the A340s are planes I simply love,blame me if you want.{Flamed}{Footinmouth}
Especially the configuration without double-excuse-me (which are the rule for window-seater in the 777) seats 2-4-2. I know better economics means lower fares so I'm more than happy to fly with 777 or 787 in the future

FLIGHT: EK 406

For the rest of the flight it was night and I guess I forgot to take a picture of the breakfast, I have to say that after 14 hours of flight I wasn’t looking at all to leave the plane, I loved each minute on board… The ICE is just unbelievable…. You can choose between such a huge amount of movies comedies trivia games that it becomes really a problem to organize your trip to make sure you don’t miss the best things offered. There were something like 300 movies that you can start and pause when you like (e.g. a meal arrives) and there were 40 movies that u could choose even in Italian… If we assume that my English wasn’t good enough to understand a movie it was a very welcomed surprise to me. I’ve seen Million Dollar Baby which stole me some tears and I loved and than Toy Story 2 to return to a better mood. Some Simpson in English and a try to watch the last Lord of the Rings, but 3 hours were already too much for me so I quitted to play some time at the Trivia in a very competitive passengers tournament.
At one hour to Melbourne a passenger watching a comedy started to laugh{Yell} like a mad person very noisy, I found it really funny but the kind man of Melbourne that was seated near to me was really pissed off{Shhh}{Ziplip}{Tapedshut}.

At the end asked at the flight attendants (really beautiful and multi-ethnic on this A345) if I could have a look at the First class and she led me there and offered to make a photo of me seating in the First Class and I accepted with pleasure.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0430.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0431.jpg

She was even more kind than that though so before I reached the exit she grab my arm and gave me a present{Present}, a First class beauty case. I’d have kissed her… couple  hearts  LoL She couldn’t know the favour she did to me. I used often the shaver when I didn’t find the electric-shaver charger near a mirror (quite often honestly) and the toothbrush while travelling, it was also quite practical to carry.

Welcome to Victoria (5:30 am 6OCT)
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0434.jpg

I arrived at the passport check, gave the immigration card and after a stamp on the passport (in one of the last pages… untidy officers) I saw for the first time the Australian daylight… which wasn’t spectacular because it was really cloudy{Raincloud} but anyway… I was really happy.
I took a bus asking for the hostel I booked on Internet (Ritz for backpackers… I didn’t like it at all) and the drive in the 60s has been in Ravenna which is 15 km from my hometown, I experienced for the first time the Australian friendly manners. In the bus I had one of these moments when you are in peace with yourself… I saw Aussie trees, landscapes, leftdrivingattitude and I thought.. “Yes, I did it!!!” For the first time in 40 hours I felt tired{Tired}

After 20 hours of deserved sleep I walked near to St.Kilda beach and saw 2 biplanes featuring aerobatics and it was quite nice to look at
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0436.jpg

Near to the harbour I saw this ship which was a SUPERFAST FERRIES ferry which I travelled on, Funny things again
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c17/JoeCattoli/IMG_0438.jpg

I moved to Sydney where I stayed for 2 months and I found on Airliners that the A380 was about to arrive on the harbour bridge so I went to the Opera House to take some pics, Quite impressive but I thought it would have been noisier

The flight was nice even if it was night, (Departure at 9pm and arrival 3 hours later at Cairns at 11 pm because of the time change) there was a beautiful moon. I knew an Italian lady waiting at the gate and I had a pleasant flight talking with her. The crew came with DVD-players, I don’t even know if it would have been cheap because I was talking with a friendly person.

hi great trip report ! must be an amazing experience for u. I love the pictures from Uluru (ok have nothing to do with airplanes, but they are so gorgeous).
And I see that you got all the interesting planes : B773 and A345.
How did you like Melbourne (despite the weather) ? Thats my favorite australian city...I remember an amazing cafe where you drink good real coffee, good food and watch the ocean via huge glass windows in St Kilda.
The italian neighborhood of Lygon street is nice when you know what touristic places to avoid.

Thats a great routing you got with EK. I guess EK is doing well with their australian routes ?
Cant wait for your next reports.

Great trip report and your english was really good. Reallly like the look of the "Emergency slide" at DXB. If your intrested Superfast sold the Superfast I, II and II to Tasmania ferries where they are now the Spirit of Tasmania I, II and II respectively. Just seems they havn't bothered with too big a repaint.

In all honesty I must say that I didn't see a lot of Melbourne... It was cold, consequently there were not a lot of backpackers like me and it was the hardest moment for me because it was really hard to understand english. I think St.Kilda is a nice place with a lot of good pubs and clubs and the city is quite nice. I absolutely loved the tram system which is really good. I liked a lot two cheap tours: Phillip island to see the penguins and the Great Ocean road tour where you can see the koalas in the wild, Bells beach and obviously the 12 apostles. The 12 apostles are really an amazing view, breathtaking, I preferred Uluru because of the meanings I felt in there but you can't compare. Both are magnificent. Lygon street is a nice place if you know the best places... Often the problems of eating Italian outside of Italy is the price and it is also very rare to find places where it's really good as in Italy, it's often because of a lack of proper ingredients or owners that have as priority to make money thinking that the foreigners can't taste the difference. Anyway I think in Australia it is the best place for an Italian dish. I would advice a trip to Italy to try really Italian dishes (of course we have also the bullshit places so you should ask for an advice) and to see a country rich of culture and with really beautiful countrysides (Tuscany, the Alps) and coasts (Sardinia and the South of Italy)

I heard they will go double daily to Adelaide in a couple of years, now they aren't flying yet to Adelaide. From March they will go 2x instead of daily to Perth and increasing the frequencies to the East coast as well... Let's see.

I thought they have only the former Superfast III and IV, I think to be right because the Superfast I and II have different structure and scheme and I think they are still operating between Bari and Greece...

Wink been to the alps (Trento and Rovereto, Garda etc.)...and plan to go to Sardinia and Florence. I love visiting Italy for the same reason you like australia...i find the people very friendly (especially rome!)
I can resist saying this: France too is very beautiful and rich in culture...in a different way to Italy of course (and luckily, otherwise it would be so boring).
Yes, Melbourne tram is great: I think it is the second biggest network after a Russian city (cant remember which). When I was there, there was talk of replacing the old classic trams with modern ones (dommage !).

You're right, it's a hell of a work, especially the first time. Each one of my pics was about 2 MB sized so i had even to resize all the images. But I'm very happy that I've done it, because I like to share and it will be a nice memory once printed.

Quoting SNATH (Reply 7):
And why didn't you????????

You're right man... I should have to...

Quoting Parisien (Reply 11):
France too is very beautiful and rich in culture...in a different way to Italy of course (and luckily, otherwise it would be so boring)

I couldn't agree more

Quoting Malmoaviation (Reply 12):
I like your style

Cheers mate

Ciao
Joe

Nice to see so many different planes, and the A380.

May i ask, how did you get from Melbourne-Sydney. Did you fly or bus?

Glad to see you enjoyed JQ a320 and Cairns..at least no cyclone  Smile

Emirates looks like a great airline. The food looks great.

Excellent report, well done.

Thanks, but there are a lot of things I didn't do. Like visiting Darwin, Kangaroo island, the Simpson desert the kakadoo park and first of all the Dive at the Yonggala wreck near to Townsville

Neither plane nor bus, I did it by night on a Train, even if Australian trains are slow I liked them better than ours, there's much more space and the seats reclines far more, not to talk about the Lounge carriage on the Indian Pacific and the Ghan. I got a very good deal, I paid just 3 $ more than the bus and I like train faaaar more than bus. (I quite hate buses)

exactly no ciclone... Did it cause a lot of damages? I hope not. The food was very good most of the times.

Yeah great report and good pics. The "emergency slide" you refer to is actually a slide for last minute bags that have been gate checked.
Looking forward to your next report!

I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning.

Hey Joe,

really liked the first part of the report - I'll read part 2 in a few minutes... sounds like you really enjoyed your flights & your trip to Australia.

EK really seems quite good, and I can understand that you like the A340-500 so much; I've only flown on it's bigger sister, the -600, but I really loved the flight: it's simply my favorite longhaul aircraft.

And, obviously, I loved those pictures of the Maldives... especially after just having returned from there 3 weeks ago. Big grin

Thanks for the great read!

Regards,
Frank

Excellent report with awesome pictures, that was perfect evening entertainment for me!

I didn't know that EK is serving Bud, was that the only beer brand they had onboard or did they also serve other beer (maybe even German beer)?

exactly, simply my favorite as well, it's so quiet, and you know I just fell in love looking 14 hours at this brand-new wing.

It has been really great to start looking at the Maldives, and I did read your report, very nice, sounds great times those you've spent there.
I definitely have to go there with a cheek if possible  Wink

Thanks Patrick, I remember clearly Bud was not the only brand but I don't remember if the other was Fosters or Heineken. I might also be wrong on the brands. I don't know why but I expected such a question from you Big grin
