Earlier this month, I visited my father in Sedona, Arizona (SDX). I was treated to an aerial tour of the area in a Waco Biplane. This is in northern Arizona’s red rock country and the views are stunning! What’s so unique about Sedona’s airport is that it sits atop a mesa and there are steep cliffs on both ends of the runway. It’s the closest thing to landing on an aircraft carrier. In fact, they sell t-shirts in the gift shop of the airport that reads ‘USS Sedona’.
For those familiar with the area, we flew over Bell Rock, The Chapel of the Holy Cross, Lee Mountain & Wilson Mountain, Mund’s Canyon, Devil’s Kitchen, Thunder Mountain, San Francisco Peaks, Coffeepot rock and Sycamore grove.
This was my first time in an open cockpit biplane. It certainly won’t be my last.
This was the Red Rock Biplane Tours based out of Sedona.

I drove my land yacht to Sedona several days after jamming with you guys.
I love the drive on I-40 from Barstow all the way to Flagstaff.
I had a great time down there in Southern California and next time I am down there, I want to play with your band again. Tell them I said hello!

I won a few hundred dollars in Las Vegas on my way back to San Francisco to help pay for all the gas I burned.
I drove 3100 miles over the last month with an avgerage of 12 MPG.
I don't even want to know what that comes out to.  Sad
Not bad for a 29 year old car though.

Of course not! It's a Ford product afterall . . .

I wonder if bouncing about the heavens in an open cockpit biplane is similar to doing the same in a chopper with the doors open???

Great report . . . see you in Vegas!

Not sure. I've never been in a helicopter. As much as I love airplanes, helicopters just don't appeal to me. Do you plan on doing a helicopter tour of Hoover Dam next month? I saw a helicopter tour for only $29.
I just may do that while I am in Vegas. If so, are you in?

Quoting ANCFlyer (Reply 3):

You are correct.
It can run another 29 years trouble free with basic care.

Too bad my dad bought his truck before consulting with me.
At least it's not a Chevy or Japanese piece of junk.

Then your cousin will certainly hate the biplane tour.  Sad
No need to pre-book. Just show up at the airport and dig deep in your wallet because it isn't cheap. It's supposed to be $89 a person for the basic tour.
There is a weight restriction so I went up with just the pilot. Mt dad couldn't come up because I was too heavy.

I have many photos in Havana but I need to rescan them in. The site I had uploaded them to disappeared without notice.

Mr. Fly, great trip report! Looks like you had a fantastic time visiting your dad in Sedona, AZ.

The Waco Biplane flight looks amazing and the pictures you took and included for all of us to see are great! Now that would be a flight I'd love to do. I can understand why it won't be your last flight in an open cockpit biplane. I'd love to go on a flight and feel the wind against my face.

The only time I've seen Bell Rock, Lee Mountain & Wilson Mountain, Mund’s Canyon, Devil’s Kitchen, and Thunder Mountain is while on the flight simulator. I'd love to see them for real!!!

Nice report......thanks for sharing it and the pics with us!

How long is the tour? Is it cold and windy up there? Turbulent? Would love to go to Sedona one day.

I thought a guy as smart as you would be at Harvard, Yale or MIT.
UCSD is a great school. Do you stay in contact with Tvlr?
I know he is from San Diego and was at those early A.net meets.
I meet a girl today on MUNI from UCSD. She used to do college radio at your school.
