And some travel advises.
CA flight PEK ( Beijing ) XIY ( Xian )
767-200 (?) Packed in Y
830AM departure . SFT 2 hours
Breakfast served : 2 choices : western eggs n sausage, a sweet roll, canned fruit and the individual serving of water
Asian choice : plain congee ( rice gruel ) with pack of preserved chinese green, 3 finger sandwiches, same canned fruit n water.
The FAs are mostly very friendly. Seat back contains tons of inflight magazines from various airlines that fly under the CA codes ( I counted a least 4 different ones at my seat).

MU/China Eastern Xian to KWL ( Guiling )
737-400 again, packed in Y
515PM departure . SFT 1hr 40 mins
Just 2 rounds of drink service with limited choices of fruit juices, regular Cola, Sprite ( nothing Diet ).
One of the FA, with a Trainee tag : boy, she was really something else, so abrupt with the chinese pax. But again, the chinese pax are something else themselves : standing up taking pictures of themselves while the plane is taxing off the gate for take off...And the Senior ( older ) FA kept asking them to sit down, and that 3 some, did whatever they want to do and only when they finish, would they sit down !!!

CA from KWL to SHA ( Shanghai Hong Qiao, old domestic airport )
1005AM departure . SFT 2 hrs 5 mins
An Airbus A320 , packed again in Y.
No meal service, only 1 round of drink with a pack of peanuts.
FAs are pretty friendly, and some of their uniforms are pretty classy ( they wear different styles and colors ).

Now, this is the important part that I want to share with you folks :
Travelling domestically in China, if you are not with a tour, they will inforce the 20 Kgs per person baggage allowance. We saw with tour groups, since there are so many of them, they cannot charge who for what, we saw them just pack it in.
Now, to the Security check : be prepared to have your boarding pass, ID and ticket stub/passenger receipt. They verify that at all 3 airports I flew out from.
There is always guards(s) standing where one lines up for Security check : they are there to inforce the hand carry on baggage size. We got stopped with a regular inflight bag that a US airline would not even bother to check : and there, our tour guide had to argue with the guy, and he was alone and the line behind us starts to form, so finally he let us go.
Last and not least : they will not allow you to carry any alcohol in your carry on baggage. At PEK : they x-ray my bag, search it : find a Coke bottle with my Vodka in it, confiscates it. Make me open up a sealed bottle of water and sniff it and let go. At the Xian airport, my travel companion did not hear about my fiasco at PEK, packed 2 brand new, unopened bottles of chinese liquors, and of course, it was taken away from her. !!!

Overall...air service is good, on time, my 3 flights. I did not have the feel that I am flying an airline from a 3rd world country.

I can't believe people are still talking about 3rd world country.

The inflight service in 'third world countries' like China and India is much better than what I have seen in any domestic airline in the USA.

An airplane might disappoint any pilot but it'll never surprise a good one.

Sorry that the cabin was so packed in Y! Move forward baby. In China, the price differential to F is not that huge. I rode TAO to SHA on Friday night to meet my partner. Then we did SHA to PEK (beautiful CA 747-400), in first class -- lie flat sleeper egg beds that they are VERY proud of. From PEK to XIY on a 737-800, F only 50% full. Tomorrow morning it is XIY to PVG on a CA 320. Sunday afternoon, I go back to work in TAO on CA again.

And yeah the third world comment is pretty inappropriate. Service in all classes of Chinese airlines (MU, CA, HU so far) are good as or better than comparable or higher classes of service in the USA. Now the passengers can be a bit much -- but what the heck.

China and India are not third world countries, they are developing countries.
